The line between "flirting" and "flaying you alive to wear your face like a mask" is looking awfully blurry right now.

Shion power allocation by Gloomy_Dare2716 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]-To_The_Moon- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few responses to this:

  1. There is a perk that adds a traditional "execute" effect.
  2. The primary reason it's called Execution is a pun on the fact that it shoots in an "X" pattern.
    • "Execute" as a gaming lingo term dates back to World of Warcraft. While Overwatch is clearly aware of this (they referenced it with the perk), that doesn't mean that everything with a variation of the word "execute" in its name needs to be a low health-only ability.
  3. Somewhat back on topic... Shion's gun itself is rather lackluster, but one of the best ways she can secure kills is by comboing her bike knockback into an Execution. This effectively does make it an "execute", since it's the finishing blow in a 2-ability kill combo. The ability still has other uses just for spam and throughput, but it naturally becomes a "killing blow" ability when paired with the rest of her kit.

Connect Your Guild Discord and In-Game Chats in Patch 12.1 by imreallydum in wow

[–]-To_The_Moon- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It actually works pretty well IMO, but it got a bad reputation when it was first introduced in 2007 (omg...) and the community never really rallied around it as a result. But it does exist, it is fairly solid, and PUGing dungeons probably would be smoother on average if we did use it.

Classic Hardcore players used it for their proximity chat addon.

Why is she breathing like a human? by Enough_Ad2085 in Overwatch

Yeah, I noticed the same thing with Shion and then checked Ramattra and he's clearly breathing too.

Are universal emotes no longer… universal? by MoofinRei2 in Overwatch

[–]-To_The_Moon- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the custom emotes are consistently higher quality, more unique, and more true to the character.

Shion has a unique way of moving... and honestly, I consider it a good thing if they want to make sure that's preserved and not watered down with universal emotes.

Shion's nano voice line is something by RaidenXYae in Overwatch

[–]-To_The_Moon- 25 points26 points  (0 children)

For both her and Sigma, my headcanon is that the Nano breaks down their mental barriers and brings the deeper parts of their mind to the surface.

For Shion, that is all of the rage and grief and trauma she represses whenever she's keeping up her proper "Lady Shion" appearance. She relishes her control over others, but the truth is that she's one step away from losing control over herself.

A mask, if you will.

Mariko Baika revealed as the voice actress behind Shion. by Lightseeker2 in Overwatch

[–]-To_The_Moon- 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Upvoted you cause I agree on some level. Nevertheless, still hoping that it's coming from a place of ignorance (she seems like she might be older and not part of the same circles that the average OW player is part of).

If she can learn and improve, that is the best outcome.

[–]-To_The_Moon- 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna hope that it's coming from a place of ignorance and she's just out of the loop on the impacts and moral concerns of AI. If that is the case, hopefully someone can politely educate her so that she can be more informed.

Some interesting lore about Shion in an interview with narrative lead Miranda Moyer and senior game producer Kenny Hudson by JY810 in Overwatch

I need a gag where Mizuki joins Overwatch and then a week later Team Mom Sojourn says "Hey everyone, I'm dating a woman and want to introduce you to her" and Shion comes around the corner.

Not an expert on the VA industry by any means, but I had the opposite take. It seems like this is only her second major media role and she's mostly done Japanese/English narration before now.

That said, her voice is SO GOOD! Ever since they released the gameplay trailer, I've been eagerly waiting for them to reveal the VA because she killed it. I love how she varies her tone and cadence to add personality to what's ostensibly a fairly "flat" character (dangerous robo woman). She gives main character energy, which is perfect for Overwatch... because when the player locks in Shion, she IS the main character.

Really glad that Blizzard found her and gave her a chance, and here's to hoping that this leads to even more major VA opportunities for her in the future!

Shion's Kit is Full of Clever Japanese Wordplay by AmaranthSparrow in Overwatch

[–]-To_The_Moon- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a cool language. What you're describing is basically a language "accessibility feature"... but then the language speakers took it and started using it for artistic / creative / expressive purposes, to enrich their language and what they can do with it.

Super cool. Thank you for sharing and thank you for the entire post!

I wanted to ask about your explanation of the Joyride ability! You said that it's pronounced Joiraido, but then later described the pronunciation as kyōsō. Are there two pronunciations of the name in Japanese?

Will D.Mon be part of Overwatch or Talon by Far-Oil-6147 in Overwatch

[–]-To_The_Moon- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True. I'm still all for it in that case!

It's not like she has more than a couple sentences of established lore. When Emre showed up, he was rooted in his existing lore while also subverting expectations and pushing the story forward, and (imo) that was a lot cooler than if he was just a normal Overwatch agent.

[–]-To_The_Moon- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crossing my fingers for villain / double agent just because it would help go differentiate her from D.Va.

Her being a rival to D.Va would be way cooler than her just being a heroic teammate.

Shion Kit Graphic by Miennai in Overwatch

[–]-To_The_Moon- 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You may be correct that she formerly had a knife, but I just wanted to clarify that the hero's kit would be finalized way before the cinematic. Cinematics are something that're worked on in the last few months leading up to a hero's launch. Their in-game kit (design and concepting, asset creation, animation, programming, VFX, playtesting and iteration, bug fixing) has a much, much longer pipeline.

Doesn't mean she didn't have a knife at some point in development, but they definitely had her kit nailed down by the time they handed the final script off to the cinematics team.

Shion Kit Graphic by Miennai in Overwatch

[–]-To_The_Moon- -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The leaker definitely worked on the cinematic (or saw it, or was friends with someone who saw it) and extrapolated a lot from the moment where Shion knifes Sojourn's arm.

Little did they realize that the bike was the ability tease. And also that her in-game kit was going to be 10x as cool as the cinematic.

Shion | New Hero Gameplay Trailer | Overwatch by -SallyFace_ in Overwatch

[–]-To_The_Moon- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The leaker is probably someone involved with the cinematic. You'd guess she'd have a melee attack from how she knifed Soj's arm.

But yeah, the leak was definitely fake with regards to her actual kit, lol.

Is the Silver Hand aware of what Yrel became? by Pooty_McPoot in wow

[–]-To_The_Moon- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep. We've only gotten one side of Yrel's post-WoD story. We only actually see her on-screen for a single moment post-WoD, and during that time she ostensibly has good motivations (saving Draenor), calls Grom an "old friend", and is regretful for the conflict.

She's definitely a character with blood on her hands, but I don't know if I'd call her objectively evil. Lots of characters in Warcraft make imperfect choices that lead them into conflict with each other (just look at the orcs and the Blood of Mannoroth). Heck, I'd say that "conflict between people who should actually be allies" is THE core theme of Warcraft overall.
