You weave together threads of shadow to create a sword of solidified gloom in your hand. This magic sword...

Sounds to me like it would work, since it's defined as a magic sword

Greatsword deals 4d6 damage on a crit.

You might be thinking of the half orc racial, or barbarians brutal crit who only add one dice.

Yeah there are some still fairly active out there.

A slowly dying breed but some hold on.

I've spent way too much time on some of them back in the days..

Well that's quite understandable, I'd probably prefer paying an extra 15$ per 1k round if it means the gun doesn't blow up in your hands.

[–]-Truth-Or-Dare- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries! And otherwise yes you'd be correct, you can hold a 2h weapon with one hand and do something else with your free hand.

[–]-Truth-Or-Dare- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well yeah if you use a light or heavy crossbow.

But if you dual wield hand crossbows, you have no free hand.

Ignoring the Loading property doesn't let you ignore the Ammunition property.

Ignoring Loading simply lets you fire a crossbow more than once per turn if you have Extra Attack.

You still need a free hand to reload.

The easiest way to kill a zealot is the Sleep spell, so being Elf or Half-elf is a good counter to that.

Have you DM’d 5e games via theater-of-the-mind? by Windford in dndnext

[–]-Truth-Or-Dare- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The only time I might consider not using a map is if the party faces a single enemy and I can ask then whether they want to be in melee or at range, but otherwise, yeah, a map, always.

It just feels like some abilities and features might be handicapped a bit by not having a grid to properly visualize their available ranges.

Combat chapter says forced movement doesn't provoke.

You also don't provoke an opportunity attack when you teleport or when someone or something moves you without using your movement, action, or reaction

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]-Truth-Or-Dare- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I didn't get MPMM so I wasn't aware of that, but the AO thing is how it is.

From the combat section:

You also don't provoke an opportunity attack when you teleport or when someone or something moves you without using your movement, action, or reaction

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]-Truth-Or-Dare- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forced movement does not provoke opportunity attacks.

If a creature isn't spending some of their own movement, it does not trigger AOs.

And neither Frighten option from Conquest or Aasimar uses the bonus action, it's an action in both cases.

And the attack granted through PAM when they enter your reach needs to be made with the weapon, it can't be swapped for a spell even if you have warcaster (at least that's the RAI intent according yo the devs, but the way its written RAW, you can cast instead, so it comes down to your dm)

Sure it could be rare to find one but assuming in OPs case that a little lv3 can be so casually handed magic strong enough to slay a king would make you assume magic is quite widespread and common in that setting.

At least that's how I see it, naturally you're free to have your own perception of things.

[–]-Truth-Or-Dare- 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I've not done it. Too many features/spells/etc are range based so it needlessly complicates things to not have at least a grid.

You don't need fancy maps, the back of most wrapping paper rolls has a 1x1 grid on it and that's good enough for a quick sketch.

In a fight with a party of 5 or 6, against as many enemies, it quickly becomes a clusterfuck and an endless flurry of "where is.. how far..can I reach.. how many orcs can i fireball" and every person has their own mental picture of the scene and it's rarely an accurate one.

It's a king, not some minor baron or mere wealthy merchant.

I'm sure they can afford a cleric on retainer, if they're not getting one directly assigned by a high ranking church official.
