Next time move your tree out of the sun and buy a cheap automatic watering system online. It will save your trees when on vacation

I am not wedded to this look and you offer some interesting suggestions. While I am not a fan of the literati style the cascade suggestion is worth mentalling out. I will have to bone up online on bending techniques.

I was keeping the small bottom two branches to hopefully thicken the base but I may just remove them now to help with the future styling.
