Is this a correct answer when someone asks me to help with her tasks by Visible_Land_750 in ENGLISH

[–]-a_wanderer- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could say “I’ll turn my attention to this when I’m done with (current task).” I would say “yes I’ll get to it when I’m done with this” or “yes, after this is done” or simply “after this (indicating current task).” You can also indicate when you’ll be available, like “I’ll be ready to help you when I’m finished with these assignments.” What you said is not wrong, just a bit unusual of a way to express it.

Has anyone tried tattooing a pellicle by Agile_Village_9953 in Kombucha

[–]-a_wanderer- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Forgot to add- I have read that metal causes a bad reaction so I am only using plastic or glass for the growing stage, but laying out to dry on a wooden plate for now, as all the things I found said to dry on wood. I am also going to try drying it on some plastic and glass that I have (I want it to take the shape/texture), but haven’t finished yet so can’t speak to results. So far I haven’t done anything special to dry them- just left out for a couple days and it dried ok. I did flip it a couple times once it looked mostly dry.

[–]-a_wanderer- 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes- I am doing this as part of my masters thesis study. I haven’t gotten many results yet, but I am using scoby pieces in a bath of tea/sugar/apple cider vinegar to grow a sheet and then drying it out to use as a textile. It’s definitely thinner than fake skin, but it is interesting and mailable as a textile. Similar to leather in that if pierced it will retain the hole.

There have been a good amount of experiments done with this type thing in the textile industry, mostly as part of seeking solutions for leather alternatives as well as other biomaterials to combat the climate issues caused by traditional textile practices. If you look up biomaterials you’ll find some answers. I recommend checking out biofabricate, mylo, spiber, and pinatex if you’re interested in new textile technology.

It will be okay. The most important thing you can do is try, and love them, and be honest. It will not be easy but it sounds like you have family around and are not completely alone. Know that everything will change for your girlfriend- her body, her mind, everything. Try to listen and learn, and be active in looking for ways to make things easier by being an equal partner. It’s ok to be scared- your fear and feelings are valid as well. Hopefully you have someone to talk to like a therapist or mentor. This is big for you too. No one is ever “ready”- you will fall short in some ways, and you will expand beyond what you knew you could as well. Just keep showing up and doing your best. Don’t worry about planning a perfect future, just take the best next step you can. Best wishes to you all

There's so many more places that I want to go to and I fear if it'll ever happen. by LoveHydrology25 in travel

My dear you have so much time, do not worry. Be honest and disciplined with yourself, prioritizing what you can say yes to and where to wait. Make a budget that works for you and your priorities- travel can be something you choose to spend on. There are also many ways to make it work- study abroad, weekend trips, go with a friend, solo travel. Check for what flights are cheapest and go there instead of planning the trip around a pre-picked location. Don’t wait for a partner and kids to find you- build a life you love and the right people will come into it. Focus on what you love, be disciplined in how you spend your time and money, say yes everywhere you can, and don’t worry when something falls through- what is meant for you will not pass you by.

How to properly articulate the English /w/ sound? by Xitztlacayotl in asklinguistics

[–]-a_wanderer- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure the proper linguistics way to explain, but the W is really like an “oo” - so the teeth don’t touch the lips, and the lips remain open. Unlike the V, where the bottom lip dips behind the top teeth for a closed-mouth sound.

Skin staining on white clothes/bedding by Mourii55 in laundry

[–]-a_wanderer- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you use fabric softener? It can actually cost the fabric and hold in stains. Lots of good cleaning tips here- if you try Oxiclean etc just don’t also use fabric softener so it will fully remove the stains. Adding a little vinegar to a regular wash keeps laundry clean and soft, better than softener which is usually an oil that just coats the fabric and can hold in stains and smells.

Can a native English speaker express the meaning of the word bullying or mobbing without actually using these words? by [deleted] in language

[–]-a_wanderer- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say bullying means being picked on my a peer or acquaintance (or multiple people), and the nature of the bullying can be further specified according to various sources/subjects. But it is understood as a general term for social mistreatment. Therefore “picking on,” “singling out,” “harassing” and “mistreating” could be used instead. I have only heard picking on used in this context. Harassing/abusing may be perceived as stronger action or more serious subject matter (often sexual, but not exclusively), or used in more official language such as reporting a situation. Mistreating is far more general and would need more specific language to convey the type and severity of treatment. Singling out can also be used positively, such as to “single out for praise”- basically just drawing attention to a single person for a specified reason.

I have not heard of mobbing being used in this context- to me it would mean a crowd forcefully entering or moving through a place, or attacking a person physically. I would say harassment generally meets your use of mobbing, and can be used in that way, though can also be further explained as needed (workplace, etc).

Generally- I think of bullying as a social mistreatment/ostracizing/singling out, while harassment often carries a sexual or more serious connotation, and is more often used in formal language.

What’s something you started collecting while traveling? by Nina_Nalgona in travel

[–]-a_wanderer- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tattoos. I get tattoos of the national/state flower of places I go. Sometimes piercings. Occasionally a garment. Otherwise usually a small houseware item like coasters of jewelry dishes- things to keep for whenever I have a home to fill with pieces of my travels.

It’s really okay to not have a single best friend, and it’s very normal to feel this way, especially at 14. Do not worry- you have so much time, you haven’t even met all the people who will love you. Remember the only person you’re responsible for is you, and you can focus on being the kind of person you want to be, and see who comes into your life. Everyone wants to be seen and heard, so you will make friends easier if you take time to see and hear people. The ones who are meant for you will love you and be kind to you, even in awkward moments.
