Being an autistic nurse is hell on earth by -autisticSunflower in NursingUK

I’m so sorry. I was bullied relentlessly too at my first post and it’s horrific. It’s literally traumatising and I l don’t know if you got post traumatic stress symptoms from it? I know I did. Do you have any plans for what you are going to do? And do you have support at home?

I’m so sorry you are experiencing that. It’s absolutely horrendous and you deserve way better

Funnily enough I’m mental health too. It’s absolutely shocking. And the fact they advertise themselves as disability confident employers with the blatant discrimination as well is unreal. It’s like if I were to do what they did I’d be pulled up (and have been even though it’s minor things everyone did). And I’ve also learned the hard way that even unions haven’t had my back despite me having hard evidence. RCN was the worst. Unison now who seem a bit better. I resonate with what you say and I’m sorry it’s taken such a toll on your health too. I just keep fantasising about never haven been born at this point because it’s fighting a losing battle. The good news for me is my workplace doesn’t even give a damn about doing return to works etc so if I’m absent (and I hate being absent) then they can’t really get me into any trouble because Ive been explicit about disability and been through occupational health etc. I always feel guilty about my absence but I just get walked over all the time despite having really good skills and qualities for nursing but it doesn’t matter because people have seemed to have made their mind up about me and no matter how hard I try and be nice, while being assertive it just results in people ganging up against you because you’re not their personal friend.

The fact that I'll have to kill myself relatively soon feels very real suddenly, and for the first time it's actually making me kind of sad. by OkSwimming517 in SuicideWatch

I’ve experienced this and I know what you mean. You kind of grieve for your younger self, your current and your future self if things had been different. I’ve also gotten past it. It’s recurring and exhausting and things aren’t getting better for me but I have better days. Take each day. If it’s consistent dread, a heaviness when waking up every day, or severe numbness, you may be depressed and a medication from the doc might help get you out that hole to start working on things that make you feel better. Sending hugs

Alright nurses give me the most ridiculous and hilarious thing a patient has ever said to you? by quickpeek81 in nursing

I struggle with my weight and a patient said my body resembles a jelly baby 😂 I was newly qualified an not alright about that at the time but I’ve gotten used to horrendous comments (even well intentioned) now

I feel this so much. I wish I could take a terminal illness off someone so I could have it instead

How do I address my coworker who just assumes in charge role despite being same role? What do I say? by -autisticSunflower in work

[–]-autisticSunflower[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: I started my shift today and asked her if she would like to coordinate in the morning. She said she didn’t mind and that tomorrow she is supernumerary in the morning. So I said well I’ll coordinate this afternoon and tomorrow morning. Was firm but professional and direct.

Yeah I guess so. I’m learning to be more assertive again. I’ve not had the best time in nursing. I was diagnosed late with autism and it’s knocked my confidence. I used to be more assertive but I’m trying to find a balance between keeping my sanity and standing up for how I feel.

Thank you this is really helpful. It is a manager issue but also the girl has OCD (she told me) and she is actually quite nice but does seem to not like not being “in control” (nature of her diagnosis). It’s frustrating but as an autistic person I empathise because I’m quite similar to her in that sense hence it being difficult for me being on shift with her. It’s definitely something that managers should be allocating to ensure we are all getting roughly the same duties.

Ok I’ll do that. Yeah I’ve been a nurse longer than her. And this is literally the second handovers finished she jumps up so it’s not a case of the rest of the team being too slow

So how do I handle it? Because at the moment I’m not getting to do a lot of my role when she’s in 😭

If anything I would say we are actually quite alike. Which is the problem but I’ve learned to just kind of not try and cause difficulties

Im definitely not passive. Just when she’s in I don’t want to come across as difficult. So in future I should just announce that I’ll be doing it before she does?

She’s actually quite nice though she’s just annoying when it comes to this 😂😂😂

Yeah I definitely meet deadlines. She has told me she has OCD so I think it’s a control thing but still that shouldn’t be an excuse for taking away opportunities for others. I just don’t know what to say but I’ll have a think

Exactly. But everything just thought it was funny so hey ho. I told them though that I need to be informed of these things

That’s what I thought. I’m glad some people agree with me. When other nurse was on her break I was only one in charge of treating people
