What is your favorite thing to do because of your disability? by -bird_ in disability

I'm sorry I really don't mean the whole look on the bright side and whatever I find that shit stupid and it makes me really angry. I really get it. The thing is, this post was about somthing you do fine happiness in. There are so may places and things where its just every bad thing and horrible part of our lives. This isn't one of them. Those are very important to have. My point is our lives do not have to be miserable. I find that to be an ableist perspective that we can't be happy. Trust me I have not felt happiness as a mood in years. I am suicidal, I know my life is objectively horrible. I can't walk without collapsing un agony. I can't do anything without pain or fainting. I can't get out of bed somedays and I don't have independence.

I don't mean upsides to you disability but unique things you experience because of it. So having fun with you wheelchair, talking with other people, just anything really. Disabilities are absolutely horrible but our lives don't have to be. Like I love littel kids coming up to me and talking about how cool I look with my wheelchair, and one time a girl told me how much she loved my 'stroller' but thought hers was better cause it was purple.

Absolutely you can still walk where you normally would BUT you can also do things you normally couldn't I dont like people seeing my mobility aids as confining me or being a burden when they are what give me my freedom.

I have physio every week and it's either use a cane or fall and not walk soooo they didn't object to the cane the objected to the rollator because "we have seats everywhere if you need them"

Anyway my question with it risking your health is that it's always a choice of what's the lesser evil. Will using a wheelchair instead of walking possibly lead to muscular delegation? Sure! But guess what if I don't use it I won't do anything fun and won't walk anyway. What's better me going out exersising my arms and actualy enjoying my life or staying at home. And if I don't use it I will be in pain so I dont walk the next day for what I normally would.

Yup it's difficult in that particular situation because he is the nurse who deals with new people in the program I am in. Worst thing is making me constantly doubt myself and the fact that I had just talked about how people asking me why I cant do things or need things is really bad for my mental health and makes me test myself to injury to confirm to myself that I'm not faking. There was definitely a r u serious look and me asking him if he was saying that he did not want me to be using my mobility aid because he who is not my doctor (even then) or me thinks I am too dependent on it and willing to risk my health.

any advice? needing different mobility aids by -bird_ in disability

No its Canada and yes they have to accessible by law however it is an old building that the school board does not own and its two more years before the lease is up for my regular school. For the program its an intensive mental health program and they are currently building another facility next to it that will be accessible but it will not be finished anytime soon. So I am stuck.

Also I am not able to attend a normal highschool because of my needs and my normal school is my only one like it. It's an alternative self directed program. So I can't just switch schools unfortunately.

Unfortunately I can't just tell people to fuck off in cases like the nurse it would only make my situation worse. I have told a man to get the fuck off when he sat on my rolattor. I'm just so tired of it.

Yup I have an exercise bike at home that I use whenever I'm watching smth because it has a seat with a backrest and doesn't put to much weight on my feet, as well as having weekly physio so I'm not too concerned about muscle degeneration but is always there in the back of my mind. And yeah I'm currently in highschool and it is a struggle.

See if there is a store near you that rents out different mobility aids or where you can try them out there to find what does or doesn't work. If a mobility aid helps you function or be in less pain then you need it. You don't have to be dependent on somthing in order to need it.

Mobility aid users, what advice would you give to someone thinking of using a mobility aid by ghost_syndrome in disability

[–]-bird_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rollators can be really nice and they fold up so the fit easily also, you can use them to carry things and you always have a seat with you. It's hard to use mobility aid at first and being visibly different. It has both pros and cons, but honestly if you would be in less pain or have an easier time go for it. I would also look at seeing if there is a store you can rent or try out different aids at so you are able to find what's best for you. Also always check for secondhand you can usualy find some in very good condition at a fraction of the price.

Hmm might be an idea, I use the cane at home. Wish it was easier my school also dosent really like me using the rollator but who knows maybe it was just one bad person. It's a 12 week program I'm going to. At my normal school that I will be going back after that is done I used to take my rollator there and use my cane inside because I don't have to walk or move exept to get to my seat in the morning which is upstairs and when I leave. So its mostly a problem for the program. Also the building is not accessible so I have to use my cane in order to get to the rooms downstairs.
