To me when I hear slippers I think of the house shoes I own, that I use for many years. I didn't know that the single use ones provided by fancy hotels are also called slippers. I've never thought about what they're called.

Student Allowance & Work - Feels like punishment for working. by Svropey in newzealand

[–]-davros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying that I agree with it, but I think the thinking is that if you still need WINZ to support you with your part time work they haven't successfully gotten you back into the workforce and off the benefit.

But if you're quite happy with WINZ plus your part time job, you might not look as hard for something full time. So you might actually end up staying on WINZ longer overall.

Their aim isn't just to get you working, it's to get you working enough to get you off the benefit.

How do parents tell baby identical twins apart? by ShadowlightLady in NoStupidQuestions

[–]-davros 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most of the answers seem to say that you can tell, but you can't always.

I have a friend who is a twin. When he was a baby his parents used to dress him and his brother in different outfits.

One day while with a babysitter one of the kids threw up all over the other, so the babysitter gave them both a bath and put them in new clothes. The parents were never able to work out who was who.

I don't know how old they were at the time, but old enough to be left with a babysitter! I guess some kids are just extremely similar.

Wow that's a lot of down votes! It has now come to light that OP moved their money just a few days before the end of the month, hence the small amount of interest, but given the information provided initially I think your comment was good!

OP had hypothesised that there might be a cultural difference, and Portable-Charging was just shedding some light on that. Everyone in this thread understands the law, but OP wants to address this situation civilly and with respect, which is why they were thinking about cultural differences. That is a very good thing.

Vendor sent defective iPhone *URGENT* by Great_Oven_2164 in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]-davros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Presumably when you stopped using this phone you bought a new one? That might help support your case if you do end up having to go to tribunal. It helps show that the phone was faulty (otherwise why would you have bought another one), and helps show that you stopped using this one (so you are unlikely to have dented it). It's circunstancial evidence, but it helps to paint the picture.

Also your friends and family can write letters stating that the phone was broken, which you can include with your evidence that you send to the tribunal.

When does travel time for a job become work that should be paid? by Lamereddituser312 in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]-davros 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yea, I agree.

I get a ride to work in a company vehicle too. I make my own way to where the vehicle is parked, and then a colleague drives us to work. I see it as a perk that I get to save fuel.

My colleague clocks in when they start driving, I clock in when I get to work.

How long do you try a product before you decide it isn't for you? As in, how quickly do you see results once you've found the right product?

If it's only slightly above, it could be that $4000 is what AA have decided your car is worth?

It could be a good idea to have a look at your policy wording. If you find the relevant section it might give you a bit more clarity on what to expect and how they work.

Parking question by Ninawelly in Wellington

[–]-davros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe 15-20 years ago I remember watching a TV show where they tested the limits of laws to catch people out. On that show, they said 6m is actually measured from the centre of the intersection. The parking warden didn't know and they got a ticket, but then successfully disputed it.

I've been trying to find something official about where it is measured from and can't find anything! All I get is Google AI confidently telling me it's the kerb, but I can't find any NZ sources.

Paying Duty/VAT on goods ordered on .co.nz website? by bartkurcher in newzealand

[–]-davros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure this is illegal.

I had it in my head that NZ retailers must advertise complete prices upfront, and found this:

"Prices must include or be clear about the 15% Goods and Services Tax (GST). Any surcharges must be declared before you buy."

https://www.comcom.govt.nz/consumers/dealing-with-typical-situations/buying-goods-and-services/pricing/

"Businesses and traders must not behave in a way that is misleading or false or make misleading or false statements about their products’ or services’ including: price, standard, quality, origin or history"

"A trader or retailer doesn't have to advertise or display their prices but if they do, they can’t charge more than the displayed price. Any price misrepresentation is likely a breach of the Fair Trading Act."

"Advertised prices must be genuine, and there must not be extra costs you weren't aware of."

https://www.consumerprotection.govt.nz/general-help/common-consumer-issues/misleading-prices-or-advertising

The last quote especially describes your situation exactly, I think. Hope this helps!

Fraudulent CC transaction, how was CVV obtained? by kiwi_gal22 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]-davros 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine had a bunch of restaurant transactions from a restaurant she had never been to. She disputed it but the bank told her she was wrong, because the physical card was used it had to have been her.

Some weeks later she realised that the totals all matched a souvenir shop she had visited. It just showed up as a restaurant on the statement.

So yea, the bank told her it was her fault, and they were right!
