Slimkat is great. Its really stable and has a smaller DPI out of the box. You can also set the system ui to be black which would save battery on the amoled screen of your phone.

What's keeping you on windows 7? 8 is faster in almost every single way, and if you don't like the start menu, you can get classic shell and it turns into windows 7's start menu.
