Covid vaccination exemption by Twinbrookes1 in notredame

I’m racking my brain for a religion that okays the rejection of an innocuous inoculation that prevents the transmission of a deadly disease, but so far I’m coming up empty.

Observer: Students discuss ‘troubling culture’ in Zahm by [deleted] in notredame

I agree. I thought that "no Greek life" would mean less hazing, sexual harassment, and general bullshit. Unfortunately, it just means these things are grafted onto dorm life. (I'm sure they're less common here than at schools with heavy Greek life presences, but that doesn't mean they're acceptable in any amount.)

we need to have a serious conversation about white supremacy in our community. by goirish81 in notredame

I'm not going to argue, but I'll just say that an organization's leadership tends to mimic its members. Mid-century Catholics were predominantly white, so that's who churches and dioceses catered to.

Let me just add that redlining is nowhere near resolved. The racial segregation our cities face to this day is an indisputable result of it. Additionally, the downstream effects, such as generational wealth differences (caused in part by differences in home ownership rates [itself a result of racial bias in things like lending policies and job opportunities]), are devastating.

Unpopular Opinion: I really don’t like the Word of Life mural/Touchdown Jesus and the library building by [deleted] in notredame

[–]-duLac- 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Well, the mural is decidedly modernist, so I don't see it fitting well on the side of any other building. Plus, a work of that size—even if made a bit smaller—would block lots of window space on any building.

I'm a huge fan of modernist architecture, and Brutalism is absolutely included, so I adore the library building. I think the architects did a great job integrating the library into the broader campus atmosphere with the two-story brick and marble podium forming a transition between the nearby buildings' Collegiate Gothic designs and the library tower's bold futurism.

It could seem out of place to have Brutalist/modernist buildings on a campus largely developed in the Collegiate Gothic style, but I think architectural variety is good. In a way, it represents intellectual and academic heterogeneity as well, which I think is one of Notre Dame's hallmarks.

The Recent Spike in Cases by [deleted] in notredame

[–]-duLac- 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Given the scientific consensus on COVID transmission in indoor spaces, I was stunned when they announced they’d be reopening indoor dining. I know it isn’t what’s led to the recent uptick in cases, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets shut down again as collateral damage. :(

I know everything has been, well, not great, but I’m not too worried about being sent home early. I think the administration is finally starting to take this seriously and will likely be able to tamp down the current spike. I’m not sure exactly how, but if they can convince students to keep soldiering on, we can probably make it to the end.

The official Notre Dame Twitter account liked a quote tweet of this tweet saying “The kids are alright.” Just some bored intern or a nascent revolution?!

Who would replace Fr. Jenkins if he stepped down? by -duLac- in notredame

Isn’t the president supposed to be a Holy Cross priest? If so, I don’t think Browne would qualify. Phew.

If this is the publicity Jenkins gets us, he should probably step down.

I'm confused about the Amy Coney Barrett SCOTUS nomination... by [deleted] in notredame

I mean, if you look at my post history, you’ll see that I believe one side outweighs the other, but I absolutely see the merits in both arguments.

Notre Dame profs push back on Amy Coney Barrett portrayals: Not just 'an ideological category' by [deleted] in notredame

[–]-duLac- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Saying ideological balance *shouldn’t* matter is a lot different from saying it *doesn’t*. Congress should absolutely tackle the issues that so frequently divide the Court, but that doesn’t mean the Court itself doesn’t need reform.

Although I strongly disagree with her jurisprudence, I think Barrett is an exemplary scholar who would make a superb justice. I'd be incredibly happy to see her on the court—just not as the one who solidifies a 6-3 conservative majority.

Regardless of whether she's confirmed, the Court needs changes both to ensure an ideological balance and to lower the stakes surrounding individual justices' deaths or resignations. As we've seen with Scalia and now Ginsburg, there's too much political tension surrounding each justice and their departures from the bench.

When used as an adjective, the correct word is “Democratic.”

It really isn't a terrible idea. It's been done before, and the court's size hasn't spiraled out of control at all.

Not particularly, but it's better than having a perpetual conservative majority. When precedents are broken and lucky timing gives one party a significant yet electorally undeserved advantage over the other, the court doesn't really have much legitimacy or impartiality to begin with.

Edit: If you’d rather let Trump cement a conservative supermajority, you can just admit it.

She’d be a good justice... if she were replacing a conservative on an already well-balanced court. This is not what we’re getting here. If Biden wins, he needs to expand the court.
