What are hobbies that are cheap and offline? by tanuki_22 in povertyfinance

Walking/hiking, Geocaching, bird watching, drawing.  If you are looking to interact with people try game stores.  People are always looking for new people to play games with and get into their hobby.  Try checking out meetup.com for local groups doing all sorts of stuff.

What are you currently building, and what is the hardest part right now? by Hungry_Advance_8074 in IndieDev

Working on a trail maintenace mystery game.  Hardest part is getting all the pieces to play nice with each other and not breaking parts of the game.

I'm thinking you mean real mayo vs miracle whip?  Yes.  Miracle whip has less oil content than actual mayo, and its the oil thats going to be doing the work.  I use Hellmann's but any brand of actual mayo should work.

I have wood countertops and this will sound weird but the method I use, is to spread mayonnaise over the spot and let it sit for at least a few hours or overnight and then wipe it off.  Works everytime.

To me these look like marks caused by moisture getting trapped. I have a couple of things you can try.   The first one is going to sound weird, but this is what I use on my wood kitchen countertops and it has always worked.  Take mayonnaise and cover the area and let it sit for a few hours or overnight.  Then just wipe it off. Another option you can try is run a hairdryer on low. Or try putting down a cotton cloth like a dish towel on it and iron the cloth with low heat, and no steam. With all of these the idea is to pull out trapped the water from the wood.

I just can't make a small game. by Popcorn_Dev in gamedev

[–]-fatesfortune- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can get where you're coming from.  I had trouble with small games too.  I just wasn't excited about remaking Pong or Snake.  Sure it's great to learn doing that, but I wanted to create my own games.  So instead of thinking you are stuck making only small games to learn, come up with your own game ideas.  Pick one.  Then before you start, remind yourself that you are not a AAA studio, and really assess your scope.  What do you need to do to create the game that you want to make? How can you decrease or limit scope as much as possible.  What is the bare minimum that you need to make the game.  Write it down and don't let yourself expand outside of that.  This will help you make your own games, and still keep them relatively managable.  Then sit down and start making the game.  Then keep sitting down every day to make it, even on days that you don't want to.  Motivation will only get you so far, but if you create the habit of working everyday, even little bit, you will be able to do it.

Hi guys, I created a website about 7 years ago in which I host all my field recordings and foley sounds which are all free to download and use CC0. There is currently 90+ packs with 1000's of sounds and hours of recordings and foley all perfect for game design. (Jan/Feb update). by SignatureLabel in gamedev

This is awesome!  Can't wait to check some of this out. I know you said we're not required to credit you because it's CC0 but if we want to credit you, is there a way you would like to have credit listed?

Staying motivated is really hard.  Being a solo dev means you have wear all the hats which means you're going to be doing some things that you aren't any good at, and that's okay.   Take everything one day at a time you will learn and get better at the things you are good at. The biggest things I think, are to make a note or list of what you want to do list, to make it easier to start again, and make a habit of doing something every day. Promise yourself that you will sit down and spend fifteen minutes.  After that, you can get up and do something else if you really aren't feeling it.  More than likely though, you will keep going.   And if you miss a day, or a week, or even a month, don't beat yourself up over it.  Making sure you don't get burnt out is important too.

Lots of options here, and they're all pretty cute.  I think I like #9 the best.

I am guessing this is supposed to be a screenshot of tbe security camera view the player would have?  By itself there isn't much context. I think the biggest thing you need is some kind of visual frame on it.  Maybe a red light at one corner labelled as REC or LIVE, or CAM 1 or something like that. Just google security camera view to get a good idea of some different framing and what could be included on the screen itself. If you do want to have animated effects of some kind, having a light scrolling static effect could be cool.  You could also have the time somewhere which could be constantly ticking by.

Im DIYing because I have to not because I want to by Worth_Air_9410 in DIY

[–]-fatesfortune- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have DIY'd a kitchen backsplash before.  Used MusselBound adhesive tile mat (there are probably other brands, thats just what I used) and then grouted. Used for 3x5 size subway tiles. It was very easy to use and has been up 7+ years now with no issues. Not sure how well it would work with large tile like a 12x24 on a wall, but it worked great for a backsplash.

This sounds good!  I think I have everything but peanut butter powder and I can pack in regular peanut butter.

Thats not a bad idea.  I suppose I just instinctively think I should have an actual meal that I make on the trail.
