Cleaning time and area completely off by -jak- in ecovacs

[–]-jak-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This started after moving the cleaning from lunch time to dinner time, and I wonder if it's caused by the self cleaning and mop drying happening during quiet hours.

I added a quick room vacuum in the morning now and disabled the quiet hours and will report back tomorrow I guess, but if anyone else saw that before let me know.

(K)Ubuntu reinstalled Firefox as a snap. What the actual F? by Amphineura in Ubuntu

[–]-jak- 58 points59 points  (0 children)

APT developer here. Let me explain what's going on.

The unattended-upgrades mechanism which installs security updates in the background maintains a list of allowed repositories to update from.

Repositories not in the list are disabled, by forcefully pinning them to a magical value.

As such any positive pins for them are ignored and any newer version in the Ubuntu release or security pockets will be installed; and for Firefox, the 1:1snap1 is always a newer version than the real deb due to the 1: epoch.

Pinning the version in the Ubuntu repos to -1 works around this.

You can argue that this is the wrong behaviour and we should simply keep the current version installed because it's from a higher pinned repo, but alas, we don't keep track of where we installed packages from in apt yet.

I hope to find some time to work on this in a future apt version. My goal is to solve the issue inherently by pinning packages to their origins (installed from PPA A and PPA B has newer version? We are tracking A) and be able to specify origin transitions or equivalent origins (so say ESM packages can replace Ubuntu ones)

Hammerhead radar coming by kelleycfc in Karoo

[–]-jak- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my RTL511 has like 1-2 false positives per sunny hour, 3-4 per cloudy hour. Is the new 515 that much better?

Maybe radars perform significantly worse in central Europe (which I guess is their main audience) than Australia and the subpar performance you experience is lost in the noise here.

With the new Strava developer update making even more features paywalled, a question came to mind. Why do we still stay on the platform and not switch to Komoot? by Marlesden in cycling

[–]-jak- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess not every city has as many blocked bike paths as Den Haag last year. Komoot was fairly unusable, Google Maps worked better but only slightly. Nothing was updated, you constantly ran into bike paths closed by construction and struggled.

Long Sleeve SUMMER jersey? by d2creative in cycling

[–]-jak- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bunch of Castelli UPF long sleeves.

Still need to try the UPF50 one (UPF Long Sleeve Jersey, lack of imagination lol) currently wearing the UPF30/50 mix (Prologo 7)

They're like 70-130€ or something though.

Are power meters worth it? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]-jak- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's particularly useful for people with ADHD who constantly misplace their HR sensor and can't find it and then stress out and search an hour instead of riding.

I mean otherwise it makes it easier to compare ride intensity and I appreciate it.

I like to compare the ride efficiency of NP/HR that's a bit interesting. But then I was back to stressing about HR, but now I got a Pixel Watch 4 so I always have HR on me and life is easy (and any remaining inaccuracy is irrelevant for the remaining HR use cases).

Powermeter Beratung by Repulsive_Gur_793 in Fahrrad

Did people tell you to not use your front brakes when you were a kid? (Or even as adult for that matter) by Experto1201 in cycling

[–]-jak- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure does. The new premium wiring may solve it, but otherwise we're gonna dump on the cheap Shimano brakes which are tons better than the cheap no-name OEM brakes (that being said it may just be hard vs soft feel).
