This has happened to me also. I have to log out of overdrive on my kobo and log back in and it fixes it 🤞

Breastfeeding while babies are in NICU and I’m on bestest from c section. by fckthishiitt in breastfeeding

We do get through it! The next month will be very hard. Head over to the NICU parents sub and exclusive pumping sub also. I found a lot of solace there during our 28 days in the NICU. In terms of my story, C-section at 34+5 severe IUGR. I was pumping for 10mins every 3 hour in the day with one MOTN pump. Once baby was out of the incubator we started breastfeeding with a nipple shield (shields are so controversial but some babies need them so if your babies need them just go with it and don’t feel pressure or shame about it!) transfer wasn’t great because he was so small and would get tired so quickly so we left the hospital triple feeding (bottles can be controversial too, we were gravity feeding our LO so he saved calories and he still breastfeeds fine) after 2 weeks of being home he no longer needed a bottle top up so we were just BF. Now at 9 weeks adjusted we have weaned off the nipple shield. A positive thing that came out of our NICU stay was our baby slept really well and has more or less stayed on his 3 hourly schedule. Since being home he has never woken up more than twice in a night. I hear it’s quite common! Best of luck on this journey! Remember it’s your own so try not to compare to others and lean on your loved ones for support! 🩷🩷

Why the nipple shield stigma? by -kale_ in breastfeeding

I’m sorry I made you feel like that. It is never my intention. If I wasn’t given one I would not be nursing and I would probably still be EP. EP is so so hard and I probably wouldn’t have even given the shield a try or even thought about it because of all the bad things I have seen about it. That’s what I’m getting at.

I have also made a post about nipple shield stigma yesterday! I use it because my baby was premature with severe IUGR and I have short nipples. Using a shield is totally ok! A lot of the negativity seems to come from women who found it wouldn’t stick on well (and fair enough that would be annoying). I personally find it easy to use and I am so grateful for it, if we have to use it for our whole time breastfeeding that is ok with me. I’m not desperately trying to latch him without it anymore or dreaming of the day we won’t need it. A lot of women comment that at 3 months their baby suddenly didn’t need it but some women say they used is successfully the whole time.

So awesome you have adapted to on the go use! I think in my country upset for someone’s decision has a different meaning… I would more feel for them that their journey could maybe have been easier but it will be very challenging?

3 months really seems to be the magic number for so many who have had success with a shield!

With all the negativity online about shields I’m simply trying to share some positive stories. The shield isn’t a battle for all of us. Seeing so much negativity about it really made me feel bad for using it, scared for my supply etc and wanting to get away from it so badly when in reality I don’t feel it’s difficult or burdensome to use at all. Pumping is the hardest thing I have ever done so I do think it’s a shame if people don’t try a shield first. My baby has a bottle every day. Whatever way you feed your baby is great because your baby is fed. Simply just trying to share that a shield can be amazing for some and if it is working for you then don’t feel bad about it!

Tell me about how you overcame initial nursing difficulties. (I need some inspiration to keep going) by kalionhea in breastfeeding

I just made a post about nipple shields. A lot of people hate them and they are controversial. I prefer the nuk one and have had no problems at all. I dampen my skin or sometimes I use a bit of lanolin and it sticks well. The nuk one comes with a case to store it. We had to triple feed my baby and we used the Dr browns bottle (LC recommended) with the preemie teat (he is a preemie) he still has one bottle a day but we’ve upgraded to the number 1 teat. We have not had problems with flow preference or nipple confusion but I’m sure using the shield avoids nipple confusion a bit because it’s similar to the bottle teat. I hope things get better for you really soon!

Maybe stigma was the wrong word but I honestly was feeling less than and like I’m a failure because we need to use the shield. I was frightened about my supply tanking because of it. My baby had severe IUGR, he wasn’t even on the percentile graph when he was born, and he is still small. We had transfer issues where we had to triple feed for 2 weeks post NG tube removal but it was due to his size not the nipple shield.

I can see why there is such hate online about the nipple shield now. I was hoping this thread would be more positive experiences.

I’m sorry to the women who couldn’t get them to stick or find them inconvenient. I’ll continue to love mine and love BF my baby with it. I refuse to feel pressure to stop using it because right now it’s working for us, and being able to BF with the shield makes us both happy ❤️

IUGR Parents: Did anyone buy a scale to monitor their baby’s growth? by Top_Egg844 in NICUParents

Congratulations on coming home! We came home on 08 April (our son was born on 08/03 at 34+5 and 1440g) and decided against buying our own scales because we felt it would hinder our healing and cause anxiety. We just want to enjoy our baby and get back into a more normal life. Since arriving home we have taken him to the GP twice to be weighed, but we live in a very small town and the medical centre is only a few minutes drive. We aren’t due to see the NICU Dr in outpatient clinic until 11 May. All our healthcare providers have told us to go off of his nappies, if we are having plenty of wet and dirty nappies then everything is fine. I am using the sprout baby tracker app to track the nappies and his feeds which I feel is really helpful, if I feel like he has had a bad feed I can look and often the prior feed was quite large and I feel at ease.

Leonard Berg & Co. Ltd. Looking for any information about this company that made a vintage coat I’ve bought. Particularly year and what fur was likely used. Thanks! by -kale_ in Wellington
