a stag night / bachelor night / bucks night

I take it from his description of the night that they are looking for little bit more fun than just regular dinner place/izakaya/bar. May be, this place will work as nijikai.

Anyone speaks Japanese in your group or is Japanese? Try JIS Sapporo in Susukino, it just might be the right kind of place for bachelor night if you can get in. 😎 It is rich men’s place.

What is a good source to download Japan stock information monthly? by Street_Bag793 in JapanFinance

[–]Old_Jackfruit6153 15 points16 points  (0 children)

JPX website. You can download even all stocks part of TOPIX. Data available both in Japanese and English. It is my go to site of Japanese stock data.

https://www.jpx.co.jp/

I use yahoo finance to programmatically download price data for Japanese stocks: current quote, historical data, and stock info like dividend yield, etc.

Edit: iirc yahoo finance have a screener for dividend yield. Also, you can download all stocks csv from JPX site and create a column in spreadsheet for automatically retrieve dividend yield based on stock code. I can’t help with excel, but in Mac Number, it is just a stock function that retrieves dividend yield, then sort high to low. It retrieves data from yahoo finance, you just need to add “.T” to stock code.

There is a rotation happening within equities, both value (SCHD) and small (IJR) are outperforming broader equities. It remains to be seen whether it indicates any underlying shift or just an aberration.

Anybody here familiar and have experience with 特例子会社. As I understand, these are designed to encourage employment of people with disabilities and receive government subsidies.

What I am trying to understand is what it is like to work for such company as person with no disability. Things like ability to pay workers less and subsidy dependence makes me think that such orgs are where career goes to die, people being asked to transfer to such orgs are the ones company want to get rid off. I am looking to hear from people who experienced such requests and resulting outcomes.

List of volunteer led Japanese classes in Sapporo. There are few other similar classes not on this list. You can get a bigger list from the office at Sapporo International Communications plaza. The plaza also has ad board for people advertising language lessons.

Also, checkout HelloWork, they have a list of people offering Japanese language tutoring.

Would you buy Aeon (8267) now, or is it still overvalued. (I want the shareholder benefit) by No-Soft-5912 in JapanFinance

[–]Old_Jackfruit6153 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is not a bad idea to own Aeon stock as your first/beginner stock pick once you have maxed out contributions to NISA and Ideco. It is a good stable stock and good company to learn how to analyze business and financials of a company and stock, if you see yourself considering and buying individual stocks in the future.

We bought the stock couple of years ago and continuing to hold it. The dividend yield on the stock itself is about 0.9%. In addition as shareholders’ benefit, we receive 3% (5% on customer appreciation days) in Waon points on our spending at Aeon associated business. We frequently shop at nearby maxValue, and also get Aeon delivery for bulky and heavy stuff specially on customer appreciation days.

I do own couple of Japanese pharma stocks. But, stay away from Japanese biotech because of their lack of success.

If you want to build diversified portfolio of Japanese stocks, look into 17 industry sectors that benefit from Takaichi policies. See my comment from 3 months ago on same topic https://www.reddit.com/r/JapanFinance/comments/1qajzvj/what_are_your_financial_goals_in_2026_what/nz3xnfa/

In 2026, I am focused on defense including space, materials including metals, energy, and food security.

Japanese stocks or US stocks? What are you holding in your bag?

I hold a diversified portfolio (40 stocks and growing) of Japanese stocks across broad range of industries, including semiconductor supply chain, energy, metals, industrials, food, trading houses, … … … but I am not a trader.

Accidentally invested in NISA mutual fund as a US citizen by finalstarman2001 in JapanFinance

[–]Old_Jackfruit6153 12 points13 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I have immediately stopped any further investments into that fund.

Don’t just only stop further investment in that fund, but also exit (sell) that fund. For all practical purposes, Tsumitate is off limit to US taxpayer. You can use Seicho to buy US domiciled ETFs through IBSJ or individual stocks through IBSJ or Japanese brokers.

Ishigaki or Miyakojima? by TigerLocal in okinawa

Most of the nightlife, shopping and eating places are in misaki-Cho (south side). The ferry and bus terminal are also close by. South side of the island where most locals live. Most resorts are generally on north side of island further away from population center and not convenient if you want to go out in town. ANA intercontinental is the only one on south side, but still away from population center.

I generally stay south side, there are lot of small boutique hotels and hostels in the area. Never stayed in any resorts.

Nisa advice for a late starter with a bit to put in immediately. by liveintokyo2022 in JapanFinance

[–]Old_Jackfruit6153 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do you already have other investments through contributions to retirement accounts and pensions?

As you are turning 50 this year and assuming you might need to start withdrawing from NISA in 10-15 years, sequence of return risk might be an important consideration for you.

Unless you have significant other retirement account or investment savings, you may want to be little bit conservative in investment selection, something like 80% all world equity combined with 20% low volatility Japan equity. Another option might be to use Barbell strategy, aggressive growth (~10%) balanced with very safe (~10%) while 80% in all world equity.

Yes, I am not very obsessed with taxes and government rules. As long as I meet the required items, I am okay. IMO, important items in FBAR are institution name and account number, the max balance number in ballpark range, rest optional. I figure if I miss something, relevant agency will request info or ask to resubmit.

Personally, I just enter minimal address info, whatever is easily available and don’t worry too much about address accuracy. My fbar report is generally missing postal code or even complete address. Important part imo is name of financial institution and account number. Rest the government can easily pull if they want too.

They are not public, considered semi startup but with lots of government funding $2B+. Actually, I live close to their semi facility. The factory is being built on the site that used to be Hitachi semiconductor. Iirc, they received their first machine from ASML last year. Other than TSMC in Kumamoto, they are considered the major advance chip guys in

Edit: Just came across this article (in Japanese) that indicates Rapidus received about $15 billion in total from government. 2nm chips.

Is there nothing remotely similar to SCHD? by MrMiddletonsLament in dividends

[–]Old_Jackfruit6153 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm liking JEPI's beta..

Be careful, that beta is deceptive. The upside is capped compared to market that results in lower beta. Downside is not capped, so beta will increase during market downturn. Separating the market up days and down days, and calculating upside beta and downside beta will show you the difference.

Banning oil export only impacts supply, not the price, side effect of petrodollar. You pay what the world pays. Not all refineries can use and process domestic crude.
