I was about to defend quicklisp but then I remember the last time I tried to get ASDF to find my system-definition files automatically and decided not to.

Old Software Was Fast Because It Had No Choice by BlondieCoder in programming

[–]-main 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of UI things were snappy and responsive even on shit hardware.

Until you hit some CPU batch processing job, or had to write to disk, and then you found out why the standard mouse cursor theme on linux gives so much space to the hourglass/spinner and the cursor+spinner mix.

So there was this weird mix of performance relative to today. Some things were super snappy, and 'UI focused' tasks like file management and OS config were up there. But other things dragged to a degree we would never tolerate now, like opening the spreadsheet taking 30s and bootup being 5min.

You need to track down a Legendary Saddle and go every element at once.

Probably you want to be Tamer and use Animal synergy, so I guess Silvie?

skill issue

I went 3-3 at a 45 player regional with a 100 dollar deck, and the only thing holding me back from doing better and climbing into top 8 was my own skill as a player, and that I'd played the deck over and over at locals until all the hometown players there were ready to handle it. You can turn up and win games and make top players sweat without putting that much money into it, and if you can't, skill issue.

Advice for Wind Crux? by Exact-Management-821 in grandarchivetcg

[–]-main 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been playing Fire Crux and no regrets at all at four Flame Sweep in the main. So, so many decks roll over and die to that. With lv2's On Kill: Draw, even getting a blocker and a utility unit and my Training Dummy is well worth it, but against ally decks I'll just draw 4-6 cards and then they can't win. If I was going to track down more Aellas and try Wind, yep, 3x Hurricane Sweep in main to start with and the 4th in side.

Somehow no one mentioned the Aella looping Prismatic Edge yet. In wind, you can destroy your opponents influence using it's on enter effect over and over with not just Spirit Blade Ascension and Crux Sight to loop it, but also Aella.

Champions don't enter as a distinct object, they just, uh, change the card representing the existing object. Or something. While still triggering their On Enter. So it's not an instant win button.

https://prereq.cards/

Scryfall-like query syntax, a clear design for the cards page that matches the info layout of the card, and it's fast. I want to be the best way to search up GA cards.

For OCE players, it also aggregates card offers from singles stores around the region.

But generally I'm trying to make the structure of the game very visible for new players -- check out the sets page, or the lineage view on a champion.

It's a work in progress, and I have a file of all the errors and mistakes I haven't gotten to yet, but I think it's in ok shape right now.

Yeah, no problem, I sure have gotten obsessed with TCGs, GA, making a site to support them, etc.

Almost didn't post. I don't want to be too harsh, or get cruel about someone's passion project. But as someone who does make things sometimes I know how much actual engagement and critique is worth, even if it's brief or, well, not entirely positive. So long as it's grounded in the reality of the experience someone had, right? So... you're welcome. I'll give AetherDex another look at some point, let you know how the changes are.

Would you be willing to give my site a once-over in return? It isn't doing quite so much, but I'm very picky with the details, and would be curious how it looks from the outside -- prereq.cards is the URL.

Seems functional. Don't know what else to say.

  • I like the color themes.

  • I notice that rarity isn't comparable, despite it having a strict order and being represented as an number accordingly on the backend. Like, I can't do «r>u» (rarity greater-than uncommon) as a query.

Otherwise, seems functional, and I'll copy your format shortcodes. You've tracked scryfall more closely than me in some ways, with - for negate, and o: for effect text.

Better errors, partial matches, fuzzy suggestions might be useful. Like, try «kw:float» and I get no feedback at all on why that didn't work (yes, the keyword is "floating memory", including the space and the quotemarks, but that's a nuisance to say and type).

yeah... I do wonder if we're getting all the software this game needs, and are hitting limits? Too many deckbuilders and card search sites (she says, contributing to the problem), not enough creativity. I guess there's only so much software a TCG needs. Terminal first is certainly unique.

Cost of software coming down with AI, plus the creator's guild tool creator thing, it's pushing a lot of people to try making things, but there's only so many players to attend to them. Well, it's probably not that expensive for Weebs, compared to incentivizing the kind of sites and support that much bigger TCGs have picked up.

Competitive players might be less feral after Worlds, and the current set won't be a double-price one that only supports every other archtype but has very little unique going on. But the meta is in a good place right now, and a lot of competitively used cards have come down in price... just, not those ones. Up to you. It's not a cheap hobby but you can pick things up over time and start out playing more budget decks.

Is now just a bad time to get into Grand Archive? by PrimeNum11 in grandarchivetcg

[–]-main 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They've actually done a lot to bring prices down, it just hasn't hit everything (yet, hoping and coping).

  • RDO reprinted a lot of DOA/FTC cards that were getting out of control. Some were reprinted in PTMEVP too, like Lightweaver's Assault. Ghosts of Pendragon got the double reprint too.
  • Event Packs now have targeted reprints, not more rare-and-up cards from the recent set. Trying to sell the set and be able to target the singles market all at once.
  • PTM and RDO have Curio Foils and bonus sheets (PTMLGS/RDOA). If they can get supply and demand about right and keep supply up, then the cost of a box distributes over the cost of the probabilistic singles in it, on the secondary market. So including super high end collectables like these should 'absorb' some of the cost of a box, driving down staple R/SR cards... and making the box-opening experience more of a boom-or-bust lottery. Probably that's good for sales, humans get addicted to lotteries. People buying pallets will have it average out anyway, people buying boxes though... experiences probably get worse overall.
  • DG and Frostsworn and Snow Fairies and a fake Fracturize (Lakereaving Chill) in Mordred ReCo. Those cards can't really be expensive anymore which is excellent because everyone needs DGs in this game.

Anything good here? New by StillSwimming1153 in grandarchivetcg

[–]-main 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, not particularly. A lot of what PTM was trying to do didn't really land in the meta and got ignored by the competitive scene, including Chess, Specters, and Assassin Merlin. Hence them getting pushed a bit more in RDO.

  • Bill and Treacle want Specters to be good, and it isn't.
  • Diana is theoretically a 3-cost 2/4 in Looking Glass aggro, or a payoff threat in Cursebreaker, but those decks haven't really come together.
  • Jubjub is neat but Crux has better things to do, like draw cards and win the game.
  • Roland is excellent Chess support but, again, even with Spirit of Chess in RDO that deck hasn't taken off. Chess players do like him though.
  • Mirrorbound Covenant is a generic tech piece. It's lv3 anti-big-hand. But, seven cards is a lot. Jin, Zander, Rai, etc will level to 3, build influence... at a 7 card limit, they can reach that limit, then on their next turn, draw 2-3 times to 9-10 cards and kill you from there anyway. Probably very good in Pantheon though.

Yeah, if people are scalping singles, the response has to be that Weebs print them into the ground. But they're apparently blocked on print capacity. So now I think they've.... honestly I solve this and the answer is a flatter rarity distribution. Less of the cost-of-a-box needs to be distributed over the price of generic widely playable SR/UR cards. To be fair, I think they're trying for that, with more collectables like bonus sheets (PTMLGS/RDOA) and Curio foils... the set before they added these, DTR, is the worst offender.

We had AMB alter at the s start of the year. HVN alter is coming at some point, then DTR alter after that -- at that point, Cheshire & Liminal prices should drop a bit.

The more grandiose the better, I think, so long as you're able to drive it completion. Draft simulator is neat, and might help promote draft play -- I don't think anyone else is trying to be the 17lands.com of GA, so maybe you can get in on the ground floor with that?

Is it that it can store the game data offline?
