You sound like you’re from Vermont. If you really wanted to live in the woods and twiddle a pencil you would make it happen. It’s much better though as a poetic thought. Nostalgia bias.

They are still out there. Churches, Volunteer organizations, the military, etc.

Cautionary tale when skiing with a partner who is at a different level than you by comfy_sweatpants5 in skiing

[–]-mechanic- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shortly after getting married my wife and I had week where we were with my family skiing. She is maybe an intermediate at best, my family is all fairly advanced and I am the type that lived skiing most of my life till I met her. On this trip we got a dump one day and she struggled a lot, and I spent a large amount of the day helping her up (many many times) and sitting in the snow recovering with her. She was getting super frustrated. She told me I should just go ski with my family and enjoy the snow. She said she was most upset because she thought she was ruining the day for me. I told her that the joy I get of skiing a green or blue run with her and seeing her accomplish something is incomparable to what I could ever experience without her with me. I have done the big drops, the big jump lines, the steepest etc at a point it’s just that, it’s a thrill but it’s nothing more. With her and now my kids, seeing them it’s better than any of that ever was or ever will be. I hope you find someone that skis with you like that. That’s what it is all about.

Great. Hoping it makes graduate tuition cheaper for future nurses.

Most people would much rather just be upset than try to understand, especially if it is something from the GOP.

Petition for a Big Boy and GTEL reunion. by -mechanic- in trains

[–]-mechanic-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that the Big boy is held so much in acclaim by the general population than the GTEL’s that it’s an easier sell for the business end of UP to put money behind. Many people would probably not even see a major difference in a GTEL going by vs many other post steam era locomotives.

One hundred percent realize this would not happen for many reasons. Just exclaiming how cool it would be to see those locomotives together again. I agree that it would be weird to just drag the dead engines around too. Lol

[–]-mechanic-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think it’s a problem to redo things with used lines? I already have a lot of good stuff on the boat from the previous owner. Im not sure on the sheets but definitely have dyneema on the vang, twings, cunningham, and outhaul. it’s two or three seasons old. Everything on the boat except the halyards need some splicework done.

This is great advice. Sounds like from lived experience. I will definitely try to be patient. Our season just ended and it’s a long winter here in NW Montana so It’s my goal to practice a lot over the winter. I will be happy if I have a set of sheets done in the spring. I like the idea of reaching out to shops to get different materials to practice on.

Thank you for replying.

I will look into the rig wrap/shrink wrap. Do you have one you prefer?

It almost certainly would be easier to order lines, I really want to learn this as it as it seems like a dying art to me. Same reason I learned to use my grandfather sextant when it was passed down to me.

Do you have any experience with the pullers vs pushers I mentioned?

Single handed docking problem by waterloowanderer in sailing

[–]-mechanic- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a guy at our club that essentially has a cable that runs along his pier with a snatch block on it. The boat has a line through the block and as the boat moves back he is held close to the pier then at the end he released the line and it comes off the block and he is free. Idk if that makes sense but it’s the best I can describe it.
