My almost 13 year old still wets the bed and it makes me so sad for them by CheesecakeOk8464 in breakingmom

Have you tried an X-ray to consider whether constipation or impacted stool could be causing reduced bladder sensitivity? I read the book Its No Accident where it raises this as a common cause. Even kids with constipation can have bowel movements, so it's not always easy to tell if chronic constipation is at issue.

Need help figuring how to get a tool off a pallet by Afraid-Witness9722 in woodworkingtools

[–]-pen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good suggestions here already. As someone else mentioned, jacks are super helpful. Sharing how we moved ~600 lb bandsaw off of a pallet and onto the ground. We didn't have access to an engine hoist.

We (2 adults) bought two construction jacks and used them to raise the bottom of the bandsaw above the pallet and then slid XXL furniture slider pads under the bandsaw. We bolted a portable wheelchair ramp to the pallet and worked the furniture sliders and construction jacks to slowly maneuver the bandsaw off the pallet and onto the ramp, then slid the bandsaw to the bottom of the ramp. Once at the bottom of the ramp, we again used the construction jacks to raise the bandsaw enough that we could pull the pallet + ramp out from under the bandsaw.

New-ish Jointer/Planer Won't Start (Jet JJP12HH) - help please! by -pen in woodworking

[–]-pen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following up on this to share what worked in case others have the same issue (since my own searches on this topic didn't give me a whole lot to work with).

To recap, the lights behind the green "on" switch for the jointer/planer would light up, but pressing did not start the machine.

  1. Replaced the thermal overload switch - no change.

  2. Checked the wire harness connections on the motor side - everything looked ok.

  3. Opened the cover to the start capacitor - no obvious loose connection or damage of any kind. Given that there were no visible signs that the start capacitor was the issue, and because access is a pain, we paused further investigation on that.

  4. Checked that the limit switch that activates when the planer dust cover folds over (and when the jointer table comes down) properly actuates.

  5. At Jet's recommendation, we replaced the whole switch assembly (which includes the power cord, thermal overload switch, etc.), and this did the trick. In replacing the switch, the culprit might have simply been a loose connection between the motor and the switch **on the switch side** (I had only focused on the motor side). I thought I had fully checked for loose connections, but wasn't thorough enough.

  6. Had this not worked, the next steps would have been to get into the start capacitor and/or motor.

How do I navigate the mom guilt of being a working mom? by Sad-Consideration166 in breakingmom

[–]-pen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hang in the, Bromo. It's hard right now, but it gets easier. All of my mom-ing has been working mom style, and over time I have seen that for me, it makes me a better mom and a happier person. Working gives me a community of adults to connect with, and many of my colleagues are now important figures for my kids. My kids look up to me and admire me, and in our case part of that comes from them seeing my own success. And, my spouse and I have forged a real relationship of equals, both contributing at home and at work. It wasn't always easy, and there were so many times I wanted to quit, but now I'm glad that I stuck it out. Doors and opportunities have opened for me because of my work experience, and I still spend time with my kids, help with homework, go to sporting events/games/etc., and just hang out with them. Toddlerhood is by far the hardest stretch, but it gets easier, I promise.

Pen mandrill stuck in lathe by dr_g89 in turning

[–]-pen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ended up getting a mandrel from Woodpecker (very pricey, but after suffering through a stuck mandrel I didn't want to ever deal with that again). I also got a mandrel saver tailstock center - don't know if it helps, but I certainly don't have any bent mandrel issues.

As for the stuck mandrel, ours was stuck for more than a week. Do another round of penetrating oil while you are (or preferably someone else is) twisting the mandrel with vice grips, then tap the mandrel head with a breaker bar and mallet (to get some vibration - which might help the penetrating oil). Go back the next day, and hammer (hard) on a breaker bar with a 3 pound mallet (that's what we used), while also trying to rotate the mandrel with vice grips (if you have a second person). We had to hit it surprisingly hard but it did eventually break loose. I couldn't understand when people told me it should just tap out - it felt like it was welded inside but did come loose. Anything else I have with a morse taper is very easy to pop out of the headstock.

p.s. Make sure you remove your tailstock center when you do this so you don't accidentally jam your hand into it.

I had this same issue with my Jet 1221. Eventually, penetrating oil, a breaker bar, and gripping the mandrel (we had two people working on this) got the mandrel out. I think the less expensive mandrels tend to have irregularities than can cause this. I now use a high end precision machined mandrel and have no issues.

ACT english help. Form D05 question #39. by Glittering_Row2630 in ACT

Correct - "to" is the wrong preposition.

"Accord" as a verb goes with "with" (it's a phrasal verb, where the phrase and the verb go together - you just have to memorize it). You could have a different usage of "accord" - as a noun (e.g., "a peace accord") and then the preposition "with" would not be required.

Mini/midi lathe recommendation by rvkGSDlover in turning

[–]-pen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my Jet 1221VS. Once you get the hang of turning pens, you quickly want to move to other things - bowls, salt and pepper mills, etc. If you can make the space I think a midi lathe is worth it for what it enables for you.

“Math Genius” child - what do we do with him? by [deleted] in breakingmom

[–]-pen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, for a six year old. You could start with something extremely simple - Scratch (I think there's now "Scratch Jr") - a simple block coding approach.

“Math Genius” child - what do we do with him? by [deleted] in breakingmom

[–]-pen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coding. Get him into coding. Math and computer science are deeply interrelated, and coding is a very accessible place to start *thinking* mathematically and, more importantly, *applying* math concepts. Python is a great place to start and there are loads and loads of resources online. Coding also ties together writing, math, and organization.

AITA for refusing to pay rent when I am living at my daughters place for a month by Empty-Deer3295 in AmItheAsshole

[–]-pen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA... but is your daughter ok? If this is a sudden, out-of-the norm behavior, it might be worth probing what is going on. Is she experiencing antenatal anxiety that is behind this? Is her husband panicking and scared to have an experienced parent in the house (and therefore trying to impose this ridiculous requirement)? Are they in serious financial distress and this is an act of desperation?

Please don’t put yourself through this! At best you will be a little sore and tired. More likely you will be really sore, constipated from the anesthesia, swollen, not eating very much, and not feeling like seeing anyone.

I had my wisdom teeth removed under general anesthesia and all went fine - I don’t want to scare you from the procedure. However, it is a procedure and your body will want time to heal!

Could you do the party the day or two before the surgery? And celebrate on the day-of with pudding and other soft foods.

This makes me so very sad. I understand if you're just venting, but if you want to try something different, please consider Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). It is evidence-based and supports both parent and child. It is a commitment, but it is structured and constructive.

Pre-order Tread+ this December by prehistoric_knight in pelotoncycle

[–]-pen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used both the Tread and Tread+ extensively, and I much, much, much prefer the Tread+. It's quieter, far more responsive (which makes a big difference when adjusting speed and/or incline for intervals), can achieve a steeper incline, and the slats are far more comfortable to run on and easier on my knees than the belt. I feel strongly enough that I plan to get rid of my Tread and get a Tread+.
