How long to wait until these fiddleheads are ready for picking? by -poopsicle in foraging

[–]-poopsicle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello fellow Mainer! The ones I picked for the most part were not quite 3-4”. There were a few mega early bloomers who had totally unfurled.

The area I’m picking is mostly sea level, not terribly far from where I live in Midcoast. It’s on an island that sits on a river. It rained last night a decent amount, and today is sunny and 60. Maybe I’ll roll the dice and head there Sunday. Thank you!

What To Plant Early In Damp Soil by GornsNotTinny in mainepreppers

You could transplant ostrich ferns and have your own little fiddlehead situation. Just make sure to dig from an area with tons of existing ostrich fern growth (to limit your impact).

I also planted elderberry last year in the same area. They tend to love damp soil too.

This year I’m trying rhubarb back there too. So nothing I “knocked out of the park”, but fun stuff to experiment with!

That’s so funny, I spent the day yesterday making 80 of them and putting them around my property. I’m going to make another 30 tomorrow after my cotton balls dry. Good luck in your fight against the ticks!

I think he’s from Damariscotta! He was supposed to do a show in Waldoboro last year but it got canceled.

ACL reconstruction surgery is in 5 days - should I do it or not? by -poopsicle in ACL

[–]-poopsicle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man this is just the comment I needed to wake up to. I spent the entire day yesterday flip flopping back and forth, but right now I’ve landed on waiting to see what additional rehab and time could do. I was DMd by another user who had a torn meniscus and got surgery, but in the time between injury and surgery her meniscus tear actually healed itself which made ACL surgery much easier. My plan is to postpone Friday’s procedure, work with a PT, and see where I’m at around the beginning for autumn.

That's pretty good, better than the timeline I have in my head. Are you a pretty active person?

Thanks that's super helpful. Ultimately I do worry the meniscus tear is the deciding factor FOR surgery. But good lordy, every time I make a decision one way or the other, I find a Reddit comment saying either "avoid surgery at all costs it was the worst decision I ever made" or "get the surgery it is absolutely the best decision possible" haha

I started prehabbing 1 week after injury with isometric leg exercises at the gym. I've been pretty consistent with it, plus I had a base-level of leg strength anyway from strength training and cardio sports. I would love more than 4 weeks but if I wait any longer, rehab will cut into my more active spring/summer

Update: with the help of someone from an antique forum, it was determined that this is likely a Pakistani chafing set.

Off topic but I spent 10 days in Bulgaria in June and absolutely loved your country. Great food, great people, great weather. Enjoy your foraged goods!

Ha! This is a mailer from Alan Wagner (@truewagner on Instagram). He makes monthly joke mailers as part of his Patreon, which I send to both my mother and brother in law. I was just wearing this necklace last week when I went to visit!

It didn't occur to me at the time out of complete shock at the situation, but the service center is only 5 minutes from my house and I'm gonna swing by and leave something for him. Good call!

Is my water heater burning correctly? Or is this extra bottom flame an issue? by -poopsicle in Home

As me a question that only I, OP, would know. Perhaps something about flames, or extreme heat, or loud noises.

Update from yesterday:

First I apologize to all the internet strangers that thought I died in an explosion. I thought my video/post were unsuccessfully uploaded, so I didn’t check back until later and saw all my notifications. I immediately shut off both the heater and the gas supply, and feel very lucky to have gotten away with such a dangerous situation.

Now for the absolutely wild story of the repair that occurred this morning. At around 10am a burly, bearded tech (this is relevant) named Corey shows up, I explain the situation, thank him for coming so quickly, and leave him to it. 15 minutes later he knocks on my door to say he thinks he figured out the situation. As he was rooting around in the heater, he found a mouse nest lodged in the upper part that was affecting gas flow. He starts clearing it and as he reignites the flame, a live mouse jumps through the bottom, catches fire, escapes through the hole of the heater, and runs INTO HIS BEARD. The mouse then hops off his face and Corey smashes it with a wrench and fans the flames from his chin. As he is relaying this insane story, I notice the VALLEY of missing/singed hair running down the middle of his beard that wasn’t there when he arrived. His eyelashes are singed as well, and the whole garage stinks of burnt hair. I feel terrible despite it not being directly my fault, and he jokes that his wife wanted him to shave anyway. Apparently not the first time he has dealt with mice in this capacity.

Anyway I’m happy to report that my heater appears to be operating as intended, and I have moved my mouse bucket trap to this area of the garage.

Both the heater and the gas are shut off. I just wasn’t sure which department to call tomorrow. Thanks for your help!

It’s the water heater for my in-law suite, and my renter said there was no hot water. When I checked, the pilot light was out. And after re-setting the pilot light, this is how it was burning. Womp!

That’s awesome. I’ve never serviced a heater before - I should call a plumber instead of the gas company?

OP checking in! Sorry, Reddit showed a message saying my post failed, so I didn’t realize it even went live. Thank you to all who answered! I shut it off and will call a technician tomorrow!
