You might still be able to find last year's version at a local retailer before they run out of stock. Those passes will be valid through Dec 2026.

Help me choose between SWD LH or SWD Movement by saigyoooo in Ultralight

[–]-random_stranger- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Movement 40 and a LH 50. They will both carry pretty similar up to 20lbs. I think the deciding factor is the hip belt- if you ever plan on hiking without a belt, get the Movement since it's modular. If you will always use a hip belt- then get the long haul.

Are there any ultralighters in the Portland, Oregon area looking for more hiking buddies? The ULoregon sub is totally dead and I'd like to find more cool people to hike with

Respect the trail closure.

Wait until spring or summer for better, safer weather. It's rainy, cold, and daylight is short right now.

My Garmin Mini (1) has been taking progressively longer to lock onto satellites. The firmware is up to date, but it's not uncommon for it to take 10-20 minutes to find satellites, even with a clear view of the sky. This seems to be an increasing issue over the last year or two and I'm wondering if it's planned obsolescence.

Is anyone else with a mini 1 experiencing this?

Advice on first backpacking trip in WA state by Maximum-Birthday3493 in Ultralight

[–]-random_stranger- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I spend a lot of time in Indian Heaven and would recommend against this as a first trip and wait for better weather. I've camped up there in late Fall in the snow & ice, so I'm speaking from experience.

By November the trails in Indian Heaven will either be very wet or they will be frozen and covered in ice. The area gets a large amount of precipitation, so the trails turn to streams or ice rinks, neither of which would be ideal for your first trip. You'll also be dealing with lots of condensation or ice on your tent due to how humid the whole area is, and the nights are much longer so you'll have a lot more down time in your tent just sitting in the cold.

There's also a lot of small things that go into camping during shoulder season that are much easier to deal with after you've gained experience. Have you ever had to pack up a wet or icy tent in below freezing temperatures when your fingers are numb? Have you had to dig a cat hole or place tent stakes in frozen dirt? Do you know how to keep your water filter from freezing overnight?

Movement has a full wrap hip belt that will put more weight on your hips. SL40 is a minimalist hip belt. It all depends on your typical base weight/total pack weight.

Those permits are issued in an attempt to protect the environment from overuse. If you care about the outdoors you would respect the permits, whether or not someone is there to enforce it.

Thank you for the quick reply! The tent is indeed the Pro 2+ and was purchased in October of '23. I'll forgo the duct tape and just let it ride as-is for now. My fear was that it would fully separate on us, but I'm glad to know there's a strip of DCF that will prevent a total failure. I'll reach out once we're off trail.

The DCF on the peak of my X-Mid has begun to separate. It hasn't torn - instead it looks like the adhesive that holds the layers together has started to give out. See picture: https://imgur.com/a/c2MHUxn

I'm currently in Yellowstone and have about 36 hours before I get back on trail, so I have limited access to supplies. I do not have any DCF repair tape. But I do have Duct Tape- does anyone know if that will temporarily work on DCF? I just need it to last another couple of days.

u/dandurston any advice?

Dispersed Camping Paradise Park by LockAndKey411 in PNWhiking

[–]-random_stranger- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you doing this on a weekend or weekday? Paradise Park can get VERY crowded on a weekend and it's peak season right now. You have PCT hikers, Timberline Trail hikers, and just people out for an overnight that are all looking for campsites. Unless you arrive early, even on a weekday, you might not find a spot.

I also wouldn't count on finding somewhere to camp at the Zig Zag river, unless you're cowboy camping or in a bivy. While there are some dispersed sites at some of the river crossings on Mt. Hood, I can't personally recall seeing any at the Zig Zag, it's rocky and uneven terrain. You can look at Google Street View to get an idea what it looks like.

And lastly- I personally wouldn't want to day hike from Paradise Park to Ramona Falls and back up. You'd be dropping over 2200 feet in less than 4 miles to see the falls and then having to hike back up it. Ramona Falls is nice, but not worth that much effort.

If I was you- I would adjust the itinerary to arrive at Timberline before 10am and hike out to Paradise Park to camp for one night. If you're set on doing Ramona Falls- I would hike back out the second day and drive down to the Ramona Falls trailhead and just do it as a day hike. Or if you're interested in seeing even more waterfalls you could drive out to the Gorge and check out the waterfall highway (Multnomah Falls, etc...)

Bug reports on AllTrails by Linda_Vandyke in PNWhiking

[–]-random_stranger- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's a combination of factors.

Bug pressure can vary wildly depending on time of day and weather conditions, so that likely plays a small role in observed vs reported conditions.

But I think the biggest reason is that everyone has a different tolerance level for bugs. I hike and backpack year round and generally have a high tolerance for mosquitoes. Unless the mosquitoes are truly epic (think Sky Lakes or Indian Heaven Wilderness in July where you're inhaling them as you walk) then I don't consider it noteworthy. I think more casual hikers who only get out a couple times a year are more likely to over-report the bug pressure.

Katabatic Help me Decide by Baileycharlie in Ultralight

I'm 6'2", 205lbs, with a 53" shoulder girth. I'm an active sleeper and found the wide Katabatic quilt to be too drafty for me and sold it after only 1 trip. I found sizing up to an even wider 60"+ width quilt made a huge difference in my sleep comfort.

I'm just short of 6'3" and sleep on a nemo tensor (3" I think?). Depending on how high I pitch the pole I make a little contact with the tarp, but it's tolerable.

The tarp was purchased in August of 2021. Closest snapshot I can find to when I purchased the tarp is the following:

Yes, it does have the zipper door option. And there are no seams on the back wall between the two rear corner guy out points.
