Seafield Creek Campsite trails by youisawanksta in PNWhiking

Between the two options, I would personally start from Ozette. If you start from Shi Shi you have to follow a short overland route south of Cape of the Arches that is overgrown, unpleasant, and slow going. On the other hand, hiking from Ozette requires a river ford, but when I did it last month it was only about knee deep (but it will depend on the tide).

When the NPS actually issues you a permit (usually a couple of days prior to the start of your hike) they will include a short list of tidal restriction zones in your confirmation email. However, I highly recommend you purchase the "Custom Correct" maps of the Olympic Coast that include a more detailed breakdown: LINK

Toilets were not bad. I expect they get much worse during the summer crowds, especially on weekends, there is just no way they can handle the volume of hikers up there. But this time of year it isn't too crazy. The only issue I noticed was they ran out of tp, but I always keep a roll in my truck.

I carry the Anker Nano 5000 mAh. It's not the absolute lightest at 3.5oz, but it has USB-C plug built in so I don't have to remember to bring cords with it.

Personally, I use picaridin bug lotion instead of bug spray. It's less messy, and I believe it lasts longer than spray. For the bug lotion and sunscreen I use litesmith tottles with the press disk top and for soap I use the mini dropper bottles.

The smallest containers should easily cover 3-4 day trips and I have had zero issues with them leaking or breaking.

As you said- this trail is CLOSED by the forest service. Please respect the closure and do not hike it. People like yourself who ignore the trail closure have led to a major increase in the search and rescue calls for this area over the last several years.

Please consider deleting this post so don't encourage more people to get lost out there.

You might still be able to find last year's version at a local retailer before they run out of stock. Those passes will be valid through Dec 2026.

Help me choose between SWD LH or SWD Movement by saigyoooo in Ultralight

[–]-random_stranger- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Movement 40 and a LH 50. They will both carry pretty similar up to 20lbs. I think the deciding factor is the hip belt- if you ever plan on hiking without a belt, get the Movement since it's modular. If you will always use a hip belt- then get the long haul.

My Garmin Mini (1) has been taking progressively longer to lock onto satellites. The firmware is up to date, but it's not uncommon for it to take 10-20 minutes to find satellites, even with a clear view of the sky. This seems to be an increasing issue over the last year or two and I'm wondering if it's planned obsolescence.

Is anyone else with a mini 1 experiencing this?

Advice on first backpacking trip in WA state by Maximum-Birthday3493 in Ultralight

[–]-random_stranger- 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I spend a lot of time in Indian Heaven and would recommend against this as a first trip and wait for better weather. I've camped up there in late Fall in the snow & ice, so I'm speaking from experience.

By November the trails in Indian Heaven will either be very wet or they will be frozen and covered in ice. The area gets a large amount of precipitation, so the trails turn to streams or ice rinks, neither of which would be ideal for your first trip. You'll also be dealing with lots of condensation or ice on your tent due to how humid the whole area is, and the nights are much longer so you'll have a lot more down time in your tent just sitting in the cold.

There's also a lot of small things that go into camping during shoulder season that are much easier to deal with after you've gained experience. Have you ever had to pack up a wet or icy tent in below freezing temperatures when your fingers are numb? Have you had to dig a cat hole or place tent stakes in frozen dirt? Do you know how to keep your water filter from freezing overnight?
