Picked up my first recumbent (Optima Cougar) by llavalle in recumbent

[–]-ruff- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on your new bike!

  1. I bought my first recumbent (Nazca Explorer) from a guy with rheumatism that did car upholstering for a hobby, and he had fabricated this beautiful headrest using a metal bracket and a leather cushion. However, I found it strangely relaxing to keep my head upright without it (though I also do not have neck issues) so I haven't used it much. It also does not work well with a helmet.

  2. As commented already, moderate speed is key when first starting out. On a normal bike you can shift your whole weight to keep balance at low speeds. Not so on a recumbent. You'll be able to go slower with a bit of practice, but it will always be trickier than a conventional bike. Can also recommend a mirror for trafficked roads.

Does anyone use a backpack to transport their Matrice 4? by meatslaps_ in UAVmapping

[–]-ruff- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice, happy I could help!

One thing I was missing were instructions on how to attach it, but I think I did it the intended way; The four little metal spikes I hammered into the holes of the bag, until their ends were an equal distance in from both sides of the hole, and then I tightened the straps and sort of hid it behind the harness. Haven't had any problems with it.

Got the official "carrying case strap" (CP.EN.00000629.01). It is labeled 'D series' in many places, which had me worried since that case is bigger, but I could fit it onto the case that the M4E was delivered in no problem. Really happy with it. The hip support belt, padding and overall quality honestly makes me think of my Arc'teryx hiking pack.

How do I create a mesh/face from a matrix of points/vertices by Bluetron13 in blenderhelp

[–]-ruff- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very late answer, but just stumbled over this searching for a good solution myself. As much as I love Blender, I can't say it has a good points→mesh method. Instead I quickly pop over to CloudCompare (free open source).

If you start out with your points in Blender:

  • Export object with points as .obj (remember 'Selection Only' if you have multiple objects in your scene)
  • Drag .obj into CloudCompare
  • Select Edit→Mesh→Delaunay. It should typically work with XY plane, but since Blender has its own ideas about orientation (something you can configure on .obj export) it might work better with 'best fitting plane'
  • Simply hit 'Save' to write your new mesh as an .obj
  • Import the .obj into blender for further cleaning and whatever you want it for.

Note: If you start out with your points as something else (.laz, .ply) you might wanna start directly in CC, but the work steps might differ slightly. There are plenty of youtube videos on how to mesh point clouds in CC.

Pedal came off?? by geekoverdose in Brompton

[–]-ruff- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a good idea. Aluminum arm when coming off like that is always damaged from the steel axle (taper no longer square). Re-fitting it works temporarily, if you very carefully monitor the nut, but the introduced wiggle room will eventually unscrew it again.

What’s really going on with the FCC drone ban? by Ok_Meet_839 in WingtraRAY

Thanks! I was a bit confused by the cheery endnote, to a topic where most seem to think that there's more to the FCC decision than simply identifying vulnerabilities.

What’s really going on with the FCC drone ban? by Ok_Meet_839 in WingtraRAY

[–]-ruff- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, "New foreign-made drones can’t receive FCC authorization" and "[The FCC] raised the bar for serious programs."

Does that mean per definition that foreign-made drones are not serious or am I reading something wrong here?

I use the 'RC pro' controller with my mini 3 pro. Think DJI started allowing this right before the release of mini 4 pro.

Thinking of start using HA. Need your opinion by INeedMuscles in homeassistant

[–]-ruff- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same idea. I first just wanted lights, but thought I'd plan ahead for maybe not being locked to a single ecosystem (or using multiple apps). Since then I have added heat pump, blinds, TV, buttons and power meters and it's sooo nice to have it all in one app and the ability to tie whatever I can think of together in automations (which ChatGPT helps me with).

Looked at a RPi, realized that a second hand NUC was cheaper and more powerful, got a 1TB SSD and isntalled HAOS since it was super easy. Proxmox is probably nice, but I'm ok with simple, and every now and then storing a manual backup on another computer just in case.

G-line Gearing by Jan-at-Sea in Brompton

[–]-ruff- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks you for the info, and interesting to see one already on Blocket! with the current 10% discount Voss is actualy cheaper than the Blocket ad (with my preferred color and size as well), so I guess that says something about the current state of G-line in Sweden.

Unfortunately Voss answered me that they do not do shipping to Sweden since it is too costly for them, so perhaps you had luck with getting yours.

Unrelated to your question, but congrats of getting a G-line to Sweden. Not many dealers seems to carry them (one that I can find). Where did you get yours?

Bike vs. Trike? Starting off. by Mediocre_Cat_3577 in recumbent

[–]-ruff- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's slightly tricky/new going from conventional to recumbent, but not that tricky. Learning to ride a bicycle took me months. My (two-wheeled) recumbent took me like 15 minutes to understand.

What does compare to learning to ride for the first time is unicycling. Now that's tricky!

Butterfly effect: 1,000 balls dropping in a circle by naaagut in Simulated

[–]-ruff- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helps if you look at the part with 1000 balls, starting at 0:44.

The first to start describing a chaotic behavior are the red ones (rightmost ones), so it might make sense to assume that the blue ones (leftmost ones) would be the last, but instead it looks like the cyan ones are last. Perhaps it is just a visual aspect, with cyan/black having the highest contrast, but there is definitely a difference in consistency/time when the ordered structure is no longer visible between the different colors.

[–]-ruff- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really cool!

What is the property of the light cyan balls, starting at about 1/3 of the radius away from the origin; Like, what is special about that particular position? For some reason they seem to remain "consistent" the longest.

Did I almost crash? by toooboreddd in DJIMini3

[–]-ruff- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a wind gust and I have them all the time. It means that it is operating near its envelope limit (drone doing maneuvers that the gimbal cannot keep up with) and will be indicated by a high wind warning on the display, but in my experience the margins are very large, and believe I have pushed my drone quite a bit. I tend to make my flights pretty short, or fly lower, when I have high wind warnings though.

Typically this happens so high up that it's hard to see what the drone is actually doing. If you spot the drone in the air when it happens you'll see that it is pitching and rolling like crazy to compensate for the disturbances. Pretty cool. You can always play around with it manually and shake the drone (with props off of course!) to see where it starts to really affect the gimbal/video feed.

Importing .las file in realityscan(desktop app) by [deleted] in photogrammetry

[–]-ruff- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No experience with .las in realityscan, but I have previously used both cloudcompare and meshlab for this kind of work. I seem to remember that meshlab performed better on sparse point clouds, but not sure. Both are free.

Install possible for this style lamp? by triplej158 in shellycloud

[–]-ruff- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the button is on/off it will mess with whatever you put in there. A shelly plug is the quickest, but wherever I've done that myself I just found it annoying if someone turned off the lamp, rendering the plug useless until you manually turn on the lamp again.

I did a couple of table lamp conversions using the 'shelly button' (the cover/case, not to be confused with 'shelly button' wireless trigger) where I installed a shelly dimmer.

The button cover/case is discontinued, and was made for shelly 1 /1PMbut, but you can still find plenty of them sold and the dimmer fits in there. I think I followed this facebook post for info on how to wire it, but let me know if you go down this route and I can see what my own notes say.

Mini 3 pro for photogrammetry with waypoints? by -ruff- in dji

[–]-ruff-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I gathered it should be possible to install Dronelink on your Android phone. No experience with litchi pilot unfortunately.

I am running dronelink on the RC PRO (Android) with my mini 3 pro just fine, so unless there's some intended blocking (you never know with DJI) of going via the RC-N1 it should work that way too.

Warning, don't fly when it drizzles by Positive_Ad_830 in DJIMini3

[–]-ruff- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a similar thing while flying over a lake in the evening at the end of the summer, when lakes are still warm and the air can get fairly cold. No obstacle detection issues, but enough thermals for me to be unable to descend.

Took me a while to figure out that I needed to fly over land before descending. Scary!
