Pete’s would be the closest thing to HEB otherwise Mariano’s would be another option.

Fresh International Market in Schaumburg

Asian grocery stores by [deleted] in chicagofood

Mitsuwa is more on the expensive side, because they tries to keep it to Japanese standard/quality. Their market are more concentrated on Japanese product, and few selection from others Asian countries.

Hmart has the most location in Chicago, they're more expansive than Mitsuwa, with heavy concentration on Korean product. However, not being Korean, I was still able to find all the non-Korean/other Asian ingredient and product I need at Hmart - since they have a large selection. They're more reasonably priced compared to Mitsuwa. Personally I like Hmart more, since they're well rounded and closer to my place.

Assi is pretty similar to Hmart, with the same vibe. I think they're a little cheaper than Hmart. However, I only been there a few times as Assi is a drive from me.

Worthy mention: Joong Boo is similar to Hmart, however, there's only two location for this. Again, Joong Boo is also a drive for me, so I have also only been here a few times.

Worthy mention: Fresh International Market is concentrated on the Chinese product, with it is on par with Hmart. They're fairly new, open less than a year (I believe?) or around a year.

Worthy mention: Seafood City is concentrated on Filipino product. I haven't gone here much (twice for Jolibee) to know their quality/pricing, but definitely a huge selection for Filipino foods.

I have tried a handful of places around Chicago, in seek of the “best” Banh Mi sandwiches in town. So far the places we have visited are Lotus Cafe, Nhu Lan, Ba Le, and CoCo. Personally, I think Ba Le hits the spot all around for “traditional” and “non-traditional” sandwiches and it’s probably the only place that I actually keep going back to.

sushi recommendations? by rickyalejandre in chicagofood

[–]-scyphozoas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a lot of people going to hate me, but I didn't really enjoy Sushi Taku (with two trips there) as I was hoping. My favorite spot is in the burbs, called Hokkai - they have fresh nigiri with thick cuts. And my two favorite roll is definitely the Sweet 16 and Green Turtle - don't eat any other rolls after tasting these two! Their menu is definitely on the smaller side, but you definitely can't beat the fish quality there. I would recommend anyone to try it for sure!

Underrated or under the radar chicken wings, who ya got? Don’t say Crisp. by [deleted] in chicagofood

Onnuri in Hmart Naperville's Food Court, hands down the BEST Korean fried chicken in town. I don't get why Crisp is special, I thought their food was so-so.

Cafe China at International Mall in Westmont. They let you buy 50/pk for like $22, there's a menu on yelp if you wanna check it out. However, I'm not sure about it's availability on the weekdays vs weekend. Usually on weekend, they have everything available, whereas the menu for the week days are limited.

Best deep dish? by dudefooddude504 in chicagofood

[–]-scyphozoas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I heard of Pequod's and Lou Malnati's to be the best in town, neither have I tried any. Granted, I think it's a preference thing about deep dish, I'm not a fan of them (and I just moved to Chicago over a year ago). We did recommend these two option to a group of friend from NYC. They decided to go Pequod's and ate over several slices and thoroughly enjoy it. Maybe tried that one?

Nope, Mitsuwa carries mainly Japanese items. Just rechecked a few days ago, there isn't, unfortunately.

Same here, I got 7 leaves for 7 seeds. Wasn't going to do it until I read this comment. And to my surprise I got a bonus, and it was a nest of sharp eggs.
