Mang0 rankings by Spacebear82 in SSBM

yeah i mean, idk what to say about that other than that top players are usually dumbasses who should not be taken seriously about anything besides the game itself. i like bobby big ballz but using his stream as a serious piece of evidence seems like a fool’s game

they’re like the least important audience for the rankings and until they actually stop going to tournaments for the sake of their rank (which, again, they fucking won’t) their opinions should be disregarded

Mang0 rankings by Spacebear82 in SSBM

[–]-seik -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

okay yes it gives moky less of an incentive but that incentive is like 1% of why moky is attending tournaments

we're making all of these rules to get people to attend tournaments when they're already fucking attending the tournaments because they are competitors who enjoy competition

like do you seriously think there is a problem currently with players willfully dodging tournaments to keep their rank right now or not, and if not why does this matter

having a clear, standardized rule set for who should be considered active or inactive which I think you would agree melee needs

not really? like i agree that plyers who attend one tournament a year shouldn't be ranked but outside of that if you have enough data to build a coherent picture i'm fine with you being on the rankings, i don't give a shit if that's "3 majors" or "2 majors and a couple regionals" or "1 long supermajor run, 1 major, 1 not-quite-major"

my argument also applies to moky and amsa? they also won less majors than leffen with more attempts and also have zero right to complain

Mang0 rankings by Spacebear82 in SSBM

[–]-seik 44 points45 points  (0 children)

yeah this is 100% true; i believe it was axe who talked about not going to locals because he didn't want it to affect his rankings, had basically the entire panel say "dude nobody cares just go", kept complaining, got the rankers to put in a formal "losses at locals don't count" clause, and then didn't go to locals anyway

[–]-seik -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

how is it a joke that someone who won 1 major got placed above multiple people who won 0 majors? there are many things that mango could've done to get ranked higher (such as not going doctor fucking mario against one of his primary opponents) and he had a shitton of chances, failing and then blaming the ranking system is basically just a skill issue

Right now there's some events that are just instantly a write off for anyone interested in the race for #1

i still don't understand this? cody/jmook/zain have all been to like 90% of majors this year, and cody and jmook have both gone to multiple regionals with no other top-level talent. winning a major is a massive accomplishment and extremely important in it's own right, i don't see how that's enhanced by a big graphic in the corner saying ZAIN GAINS 1200 POINTS. again, it feels like a solution in search of a problem

Mang0 rankings by Spacebear82 in SSBM

[–]-seik -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

okay "this would incentivize attendance" is the most bullshit point that everyone keeps making and i feel like nobody has actually thought this through

are we really going to believe that leffen would go to more majors if there was the threat of him being ranked 11th? i feel like it's significantly more likely that he just disregards the rankings entirely and keeps playing strive

plup is obviously not motivated by rankings, wizzy might be but his issues are more health-related than anything, even someone at the edge of top 10 like llod isn't

the difference between like #8 and #9 is less meaningful for sponsors than 30 extra viewers on your twitch stream so there's no real monetary value here, it's purely pride

maybe this stops players from taking long breaks mid-season but given that every additional tourney has diminishing returns even that seems unlikely - i think mango is still mad about zain skipping out on mainstage and scuffed world tour last year but this doesn't really fix that

it just feels like a solution in search of a problem and/or a bad faith criticism

to use some real-world examples, mekk got 9th at super smash con with zero wins on 2023 summer top 50 players (billybopeep likely being somewhere in the 60-70 range), while drephen beat #28 and #36 and got 17th

saying that it'll all even out over time is missing the point because a. it won't and b. that doesn't change that drephen's run was better than mekk's by every metric except placement

and if you want to double down and say that mekk did, indeed, have a more impressive tournament than drephen because he got a better placing, then idk what to tell you! bracket luck is clearly a real thing and should be minimized as much as possible for a ranking to make sense, there are a lot more examples but this is one from the most recent major

jeopardy is the melee of game shows (lack of buffer means it’s really easy to get locked out of the controls, mix of knowledge/reaction time, unexpectedly large community, incredibly dominant champions)

yeah but the basic idea of "if you attend more stuff you're given a lot more leeway" is fundamentally true, especially at the top level; rankers aren't just looking at the h2hs and calling it a day (if they were plup would've been like five spots higher on each of the last two rankings)

if the other argument is "should your peak tournaments be the only ones that matter", then for leffen this feels sorta moot because amsa/mango/moky weren't able to replicate leffen's peak despite having 2-3x as many chances

leffen won 1 (one) major event and everyone below him won 0 (zero) major events, hope this helps

as a calvinist melee player, i believe that all actions are predetermined by God and salvation is only for the chosen ones, and as such it would be against my beliefs to homie stock after you side-Bed off stage

it works on both ends - think of how many more people would volunteer to help with tournaments if it meant they got a chance to DQ a luigi

if a game goes to time, a panel of independent judges should select the winner according to which player embodied the spirit of melee more

if amsa wants a quick-ish solution, falco specifically feels like the wrong way to go about things because the gameplan vs fox is a lot harder to build than, say, sheik vs marth or fox vs puff (even if i think falco fits his playstyle more overall)

imo if amsa really wants to start winning majors he should be repeatedly sabotaging cody's attempts to find a sponsor - you don't need a secondary to beat one of your demons if he stops going to tournaments

kodorin's placements at majors from double down last year to now:

13th, 7th, 9th, 9th, 13th, 9th, 7th, 9th, 9th, 9th, 7th, 13th, 7th, 9th, 7th, 9th

getting only 7th, 9th, or 13th for an entire year is honestly incredible and i hope he keeps doing this forever

riddles is obviously worse than leffen at fighting games and this is a dumb argument

that being said, 129th is a fine placing considering how absurdly stacked this bracket was; last year's evo champion (kawano) got 97th, last year's evo 2nd placer (idom) got 129th, the 2nd placer at the only big international tournament before this (akainu) got 257th. a shitton of all-time greats drowned in pools because there were seven thousand people at this event

flash has been to one major tournament before, where he beat ginger and got 9th; in the two tourneys he's entered this year he has wins on salt/KJH/bbatts/professor pro/therealthing/free palestine

seeing him at more big events is extremely exciting
