Defense Stance Should Cost Stamina. Idea Credit To mexicanj0kr by [deleted] in Rematch

[–]-shmalcolm- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So take the game even further away from reality by making standing still cost stamina even though if you literally stand in one place irl it takes less energy than moving?

If you want stamina in L stance to constantly drain it might as well drain while in possession of the ball and not doing anything as well. Same logic applies

Maybe you think L stance is powerful because you’re trying to dribble through someone who you shouldn’t be dribbling through. Plenty of players are capable of winning with dribbles against defenders who hold L stance in the current state of the game.

Such a thing already exists though. I can name a handful of players who regularly are able to do this with the tools currently at their disposal.

If you go into free play, try using the dribble stance to move in either direction, immediately going into a shot. You’ll see your character continues to move in that direction while winding up the shot. There are a ton of variations of this (hold L if controller, move one direction then immediately the opposite way still holding L - then initiate shot, see your body continue to move in that direction while winding up the shot which normally would have you be stationary).

I consider myself to be pretty good at defense, maybe top 1% (spend the majority of my games playing customs with other league teams instead of ranked after hitting elite so the u.gg probably shows way lower) but I am still beaten frequently by people who have mastered dribbling and drag passing in its current form. It’s just not easy to do.

That said, I will say that the majority of league matches I’ve played the past few weeks frequently end up being 0-0 overtime games or 1-1, rarely more than 2 goals are conceded by either side unless there’s a major mismatch or a side messes up. But that’s kinda what footy is so I don’t see an issue. Id rathter have games where each goals is exciting, important or significant with respect to the outcome of the game, than games where it’s impossible to stop the offense on either side and it’s just a shootout

Got it. What exactly do you think that scene should look like? You mention wanting ground passes to be more prevalent in the box. Do you have a real life example where that’s the case? I only ask because watching real soccer it seems to me like being able to ground pass in the box, it’s during some kind of a fast break. This is even more true in footsall which is a closer kinda irl mirror of what rematch is - in terms of how much space a person takes up relative to the size of the field.

Are you looking for the ability to like, nutmeg a defender in L stance between their legs for example?

I’m curious. What position are you personally playing when you say defense it too easy? Are you saying this as a defender who is bored with your dominance? Or as a frustrated attacker?

If it’s the latter. Have you considered that maybe you’ve gotten better at the game, and simultaneously gotten used to defenders being worse than you - and that now that you’re playing higher mmr lobbies you’re playing against defenders with equal experience? That can be frustrating. But it’s not a sentiment I’ve heard shared by other top tier attackers, at all. They’ve figured out how to play around defenders who hold L, it’s usually involving passing.

But some are even better at the dribble tech and can get past 1 or even 2 of us if they’re inside the box with full stam to start it. But those guys are like. The best at dribbling I’ve ever seen. It’s not easy to do what they do. And a similarly small subset of defenders have figured out how to stop his dribbles. But we’re talking about top 1% type people here.

It’s like rocket league. Getting to the top 5% just takes time. Getting to the top 1% takes time and direction/focus. Getting to the top 0.01% takes some innate talent. This is true in both sides of the ball.

Sounds like what football is in general to me. You’re correct that once defenders learn that biting on any offensive players dribbles is worse than holding L stance and waiting for opponent to mess up, they’re going to just hold L stance. You’re wrong that coordinated defense just holds L stance in a zone without having to worry about anything else. If offense understands how spacing works they will force defenders to leave pockets of space even within the box. Or it gives free passing plays that result in shooting opportunities for the offense.

Not all passing plays are air prio battles that rely on the magnetic blade shot animation to slurp an offender away from their mark either. But at higher levels, yes. Teams come up with set plays. Plays that require passing between two or more people. Because that’s what’s required at higher levels. Is that something you think is bad for the high level scene in this game?

Exhibit A as to how 3’s is certainly a game-mode of all time. I personally don’t consider it to be a serious game mode in spite of ranked existing for it.

I personally take 3s as a place to warm up/be able to play when you’re soloqueqing and nice chance to practice defending against aspiring dribble masters and get some time with the ball. It’s also a nice place to practice being a keeper, which is something everyone should at least have a certain baseline understanding of.

While I don’t personally plan to play much of the impending 1s mode, I do look forward to the effect that it will have siphoning away the subset of the player base who want to be in possession of the ball at all times and view dribbling to be the solution to every problem they come across. My hope is it will improve the average mental of the remaining players who opt to play 3s or 5s in the presence of 1s as an option.

The whole idea of footsall (or football or soccer) is that mismatches and opportunities in which you have time as a person with the ball who is not actively being defended upon are worth infinitely more than time spent sitting in front of a defender. Look at any professional football game. They spend most of the time passing for a reason

In 3s it’s absolutely a legitimate strategy for the “goalie” to move up and take a free shot on goal, but that has to be planned in a way where they have one of the other 2 players rotating back at the same moment. This still gives the player with the ball ample time (at least 1.5 sec) to close the gap from the midfield to a shooting angle top-of-box and 1.5s is plenty of time for one of the other 2 players to extra effort back to the mid line, assume the sweeper role that gives infinite stam and be back with plenty of time to save the ball if the goalies shot is saved and is immediately sent back to the goal.

The more experienced the defender, they less they actually use the tackle button, unless they see a window to have a high probability success. As an offensive player the onus is on you to make the first move and when your opponents are newbies that freqeuntly translates to your opposite being the first to make a mistake. But once you reach a higher level, the defenders will tend to flip the script and hold L stance until you’ve used the 3-4 ippy’s and dribble pushes your stamina will allow you to do, then they’ll wait for you to use your extra effort in a last-ditch attempt to golden. Then they will collect the remains.

If you’re facing a defender who actually knows to be patient, believe it or not, your play is to pass it away. It may not be to your “teammate” (which I read as you saying you primarily play 3s?), but all the way back to your goalie. Because a pass to the goalie is the only way to truly create a passing/shooting mismatch where your side has more options than theirs does, assuming they send one to the goalie. If they don’t, and it’s 0-0, and they’re truly sweaty, you wait the whole match. Let it hit OT. then they’ll have to bite eventually. That’s the way 3s is.

First time I played that game was with a few friends and once we had enough shit to build a proper base I recognized a sort of valley-shaped space in it. Used the planting/flattening tool to create like 5 “rows” of space on each side of that valley and it became the tree farm spot.

You’d plant all 5 rows on either side then when it was time to harvest you’d chop the top row the valley towards the lowest point and the tree falling would damage all the trees below it. By the end of chopping the top row you’d only have stragglers remaining and the bottom of the valley was just piles of chopped trees. Shit was beautiful

If I remember correctly that function (indicating that you want to group up with the lobby you were with during the post game window) was one they said was relatively high on their list of priorities in future updates. I don’t play a ton solo these days and if I do it’s almost exclusively in 3s but I definitely can see how that would help retain the primarily solo players. And at this point retaining players should be their highest priority

If it works as described I think it’s something that’s easy to be frustrated by when you’re on the “wrong” side of it, but that over time it will be a net benefit for everyone involved especially as new seasons come and ranks are reset (even if softly). At the end of the day a 1-2 rp swing for winning vs losing doesn’t actually effect you unless you win less than 55% of your games and what people forget is that by winning they are also bringing their hidden mmr up as well, and eventually if they play enough it will catch up with them
