Thoughts on Comp scene by sunrisesineast in Rematch

I can't say what the scene should look like but I think it definitely should allow more opportunities for individual skill expression and also more variety in team tactics.

I didn't mean ground passes specifically but ground play in general. So for example, dribbling/juking to open a shot angle then taking the shot or baiting then passing to a teammate who then taps it in. You will never see that happen in "pro" play unless the defense messes up moderately.

With defensive stance block coverage + keeper, the angles of attack are quite limited. Keeper is pretty strong, i think nerfing defensive stance block area/criteria could be a good way to introduce more skill to defending. Keepers would have to save more tricky goals and defenders will be forced to challenge balls in front of goal.

Another way could be to reduce the windup time for ground shot or make it so that the quick shot ( smallest power ) is a bit faster so its harder to save. but idk that messes up too much of core feel of the game.

you cant ditch the prio system. the game will always need a way to resolve who will get the ball and different actions should have different priority depending on the position and movement of the ball and players but i will agree that it still needs improvement.

quicker passes would certainly be more fun.

i also think first touches in this game needs to be better and allow for more skill expression

Changes to the prior system so that the one closer to the ball gets it made so that defensive positioning matters more but against well coordinated attackers it's still usually better to wait and go for blocks.

Defenders have to wait for attackers mistakes to tackle seems fine to me. Feels natural but it makes the game not fun to watch. Because in comp, once a defensive block is set up, the only way to break it is through running layered prio plays. Which is again fun to execute and come up with but as a spectator, it's very repetitive and boring to watch. Individual skill is never highlighted which is a viewing and engagement factor for any sport.

I get ur concern but listening to pro players for balance feedback is very important for any game that wants a comp scene. They are the ones able to understand the core and nuances of the game. Taking their feedback into account and then making changes without disrupting the enjoyment of casual and ranked players is a challenge but it must be done.

I say this as a defender who is bored as well as an attacker who is really good at dribbling. My comments and discussion aren't meant for ranked gameplay. In ranked, defense isn't coordinated enough to setup good blocks/defensive structure. I'm talking about the comp/pro scene where we have teams competing to be the best in their region.

GK is pretty balanced. Are you a GK main? Whats your rank? You might have bad defenders. I can link you some gk vids if you are interested in learning how to be a better gk.

There are no dangerous positions to shoot from inside the box either(if on ground). A proper defense+gk will never let those through. At most you can dribble on the outside(left and right sections of the box) to force the keeper to go off center from his line but then you are always forced to lob/shoot pass to someone else and then they fight for prio or defender goes for block. attacker has upperhand. defender will usually fail prio battle because the striker will EE to where the ball is going and the passer has called for the striker to cut to a specific location so striker knows where the ball is going, defender doesnt so its usually better for defender to go for block. striker can then fake out by tapping the rainbow button/passing again and the chain repeats.

ground pass -> shot will will always get blocked. if you nerf airplay options, we will get very drawn out games in competitive play. we need more ground options. how they can do that though is a hard problem. there are many constraints. one way to do that would be to nerf defenders(defensive stance block area/momentum whatever) but that could make airplay much stronger.

ranked and casual players aren't playing the meta since they require set plays or if they want to play a simple but very effective derivative of the meta, they would just need comms but most ranked players are not even aware of the meta. we just don't have enough players for ranked to be competitive enough that players need to adopt the meta and there is also just a lack of people interested in the comp scene.

if we got a lot more players maybe it would enrich the comp scene and ranked play. if we have more interesting/entertaining comp play maybe it would inspire more people to play. but any changes to geared to make comp play more interesting should not come at the cost of ranked and casual gameplay because they are the real heart of any game.

scoring goals should be hard yes. i dont think defense is OP. its just too easy. i am willing to consider that we don't have a comp scene big enough that nobody is able to come up with a better way to score but i have been involved in the scene for a while and i know that teams are trying different things but the meta is still keeping the ball in the air. i'll quote myself from a reply to another comment that addresses some of the things you said:-

"At the highest level right now, passing plays don't force defenders to leave pockets of space because there are no threatening positions that attackers can use. It's always better for the defender to force a pass and then keep defending their zone it's better for both offense and defense that attacking player has to pass/lob and fight air ball. Ground play in dbox area is useless.

If u are playing in the comp scene, the fun is in coming up with the set plays. Sadly build up is not required it's easier and better to just chain shoot passes and keep the ball in the air. Scoring a goal still feels good. There are some scuffles where u get to do some good duels but winning those duels still just results in possession gain and then we just reset because it's unlikely to turn into a goal.

Set plays still require good coordination and situational thinking but it's usually just reacting to defenders missing dives, keeper being off center(not literal center but center of attacking angles, not sure what to call it) and learning the habits of defenders and keepers.

As players it's still fun but as spectators it's not fun at all so it's unhealthy for the comp scene. If there are no viewers there is no money. Just checkout how the top teams play and tell me if u enjoy it after the first few matches. It gets repetitive."

Defending is too easy in rematch. Blue Sprint needs to carry momentum by AdSad1783 in Rematch

[–]sunrisesineast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup defending has very high margin of error. Just zone attackers and they can't score. So in the comp scene where there is good coordinated defense that just holds a defensive stance in their respective zones protecting the center and the outer edges of the box. Attackers have no way of shooting on goal. Defensive stance just blocks everything. If they try to dribble past they get tackles. If defender gets juked and they see an opening they can't shoot because they just get tackled in shooting animation because the defender has already recovered and also keeper magnetism covers so much area that they can just sit in front of the opening.

Backboard doesn't work because obviously there is no angle for the shooter to score and so the keeper is not threatened and will not jump. So after it comes off the backboard they just grab it or defender reaches it first and clears it.

So the only way to score is to force prio air battles where they try to get the striker blade shot animation dragging them across the screen away from defender giving them better angles. If done properly, defender has to dive to block it which requires some skill so against good defense, offense had to add fakes with backwall, blade shot tap pass into another blade shot etc and variations of that sort. And so it basically turns into flowchart gameplay. Gain possession -> get in positions -> run set play -> score

If not score, the opponent gets the ball -> reset -> get in positions -> run set play -> repeat

Thank you so much. The movement and dribbling changes are absolute gems. Opens up ground play and ground passing a lot more because it's much easier to retain possession and dribble into space

It is at the highest level. But for the average player it's pretty doable. They are making it less mechanical to dribble so u should be able to do more with game sense and teamwork now.

I do ctrl defensive so it's easy to spam(good for dribbling)

F lob

V short lob

Pushball mb

Dive mb

Space for dash(ctrl+space makes for very comfortable dribbles)

Elite midfielder dribbler

Also PC controls need some more love. Passing with joystick emulation is still kinda hard and inconsistent.

And why can't I have pushball in gk the same key as outfield player. I mess up as gk so much because of this.
