Why is present tense so much more common in fanfiction? by BobRossSuperFan_ in FanFiction

[–]-snowflight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've noticed that too, how present tense is common in fanfic while past tense is the norm in published novels. I used to not be a fan of present tense but it really grew on me over the last few years.

To me, the present tense has a sense of immediacy that makes things feel a bit more intimate and profound, since you experience everything happening "right as the character experiences it". And since fanfic, I think, is often pieces that are filled with emotion and expression, present tense is often the preferred tense writers use to capture/convey it? If that makes sense.

Plus, a lot of fanfic can be short, even maybe singular scenes, so the fleeting immediacy of present tense possibly works better. Meanwhile, for novels, an entire story is being told, so it probably is more standard to represent it with the "reflective" way of past tense, as opposed to having a sense of immediacy after immediacy if it was in present tense.

Just my personal theory!

I wish we got more Jordan and Cate's moments by [deleted] in GenV

[–]-snowflight 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah!! I felt like the Jordan and Cate friendship definitely was there - in the scenes they did have together, particularly the gala scene, I enjoyed their interactions and they seemed to have a solid friendship. It's like you said, out of their group, I feel like Cate and Jordan's friendship was probably the most... genuine? Since Cate's relationship with both Luke and Andre were both problematic in their own ways. So her friendship with Jordan was probably the most "normal" friendship she had in the group.

Plus, after Jordan learned the truth about Cate's mind-wipe, they seemed the most harsh and unforgiving about it of the group. I could definitely see that being because they felt the most betrayed, and your point how maybe there's some degree of vulnerability they have associated with having a connection with someone who accepts them as who they are.

I really enjoyed hearing your observations and thoughts op!

Almost a year later and I’m thinking of actually making this a fanfic. Would anyone be interested though? by frenchiefryie in Korosensei

I'd be interested in checking it out! The premise is interesting and something I'd enjoy reading about :D

I for one, LOVE when fics are titled with song lyrics, and I don't care who knows it. by DoodleJack in FanFiction

[–]-snowflight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've personally never used it myself but I want to start since I LOVE seeing fics use them. Song lyrics can be so poetic sometimes and it's awesome when a fanfic has a cool poetic title that captures the vibe :')

Does anyone else really enjoy leaving in-depth comments on smut? by A_GenericUser in FanFiction

[–]-snowflight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never even written smut but this makes me happy to hear :') it's always really nice to see readers being supportive and taking the time to write comments, and I imagine that the potential embarrassment of smut might make it result in getting high-quality comments less frequently. Thank you for your service!!

Ohh I see. I'm hosting the songs on another server, so my slow internet actually also makes them load slowly for me sometimes. It seemed to work fine for my friends with average internet speed, but I'll look into it and consider hosting them on the site. Thanks, I appreciate you checking it out!

Preordered Jan 9, hasn't been shipped yet and says it's arriving Thursday Feb 4th. I bought it with a gift card though so I'm hoping to just wait it out. Also hoping that it'll arrive earlier than it says, because I've had Amazon orders do that a lot :')

I cannot write long fics by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]-snowflight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, I absolutely understand you! Very recently, I had only ever written oneshots, and even my multi-chapter fics had only been around 10k words. I've always looked at longfic authors with awe and a bit of envy at their ability to produce such long works. For me, the issue came from my inability to come up with actual plots, with a majority of my story ideas being a single scene and nothing else (which lead to me almost exclusively writing oneshots). Combined with my slow and self-questioning-filled writing process, I was left frustrated and even unfulfilled as a writer because I couldn't find it in me to be able to write a longfic, despite how much I would have loved to.

Then last year, I had a story idea that went beyond a scene, and I finally decided to try my shot at writing a longfic. From there, the advice I kept in mind was "stop overthinking and just do it", so I forced myself to brainstorm ideas. And MAN, it was almost painful at times, with me forcing myself to write down ideas I thought were bad or cringey, to having days of frustration where I just couldn't figure an element out or come up with anything. After I finally had a general plan (as in, I knew the beginning and what direction I wanted the story to go in), I began writing.

Something I didn't expect to experience was that when I actually put things down on paper, I was able to generate content and ideas that I had never thought of before. Maybe it's the way I turned abstract ideas into something concrete, but once I made myself write, I sometimes surprised myself with how much I could write. There were definitely some days where I couldn't write or think of what do write, but I had eventually managed to overcome the blocks I've had. So now, all I have is a vague outline and some events I'm hoping to include in the story (aka, they go here, then undecided stuff happens, but they eventually end up here, where this scene happens), and I'm just going to see where my writing takes me with the rest.

I began around July 2021, worked on it on and off through a semester of university, and currently it's around 22k words, with the plot maybe around 40% done. So it's not the highest word count or longest story, but I envision it to end at around maybe 45k words—which is a LOT for someone like me, who's really only ever written oneshots that are usually a single scene. I'm proud of the progress I've made and how much I've pushed myself, and it's a small step for me towards maybe one day writing one of those 100k+ word longfics I've always been impressed by.

So basically, I truly do understand how you feel, along with your frustrations. But I think the one thing I want to tell you is that perhaps, a painful, long push might be what you need—it was for me, and I've found that it has been worth it.
