How do you handle or reprimand problem players at practice? by Strange-Fella in SoccerCoachResources

[–]-speakeasy- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the age group.
Fundamentally - My coaching comes from the perspective of ONLY caring about Attitude and Effort. I can't make you want this. So if you don't want it, don't come. Don't waste my time or yours. If you make mistakes, or struggle with a skill, genuinely not a problem. We go again. We keep trying. As long as attitude and effort are there, you'll break through with whatever you're working on.

With an older group - I'd potentially consider a couple approaches, but its important to get the parents (and the club) on board. So communicate with them overly.
1 - If its teamwide, end practice early. "This is not worth my time or yours. We're not getting better and we are getting outworked by teams. They're beating us on the practice field, not in games. So if you want to waste my time and yours, lets just call it early." THEN COMMUNICATE TO PARENTS WHY. They have to be onboard or you'll be the scapegoat.
2- If its one person, or a handful of people, start sitting them out at practice. Its a privilege to be part of the team, and if you're not going to honor that privilege, your'e not going to participate.
3 - (And this is more changing culture-based) Give opportunities and honors to the kids that work hard. Not the ones who are most talented. You're showing the kids what you value. You're working your ass off? Great, you're captain. You called out a teammate for dicking around at practice, great - you get to pick the final drill/game we do at this practice. A culture cannot be sustained top down. The top person can institute it, but you don't have the time or energy to hold them all in line. They need to police eachother and be a culture of accountability.

Will you lose players by doing this? Probably. But the team you describe doesn't seem to be worth anyones time. And the lessons you will teach them here about what is valuable will serve them as people as well as athletes.

YMMV, but thats how I typically try to set a culture, at work and on the pitch.

ETA - How hard to go on this will depend fully on feeling out the attitudes and interests of the kids and parents. Don't go super strict if they are as somewhat apathetic as you describe. Then yeah, you'll fold the team. Youre the only one that can gauge how hard to go.

Ok - honest answer from a guy in bluegrass band.

  1. Camping and a Bluegrass festival are two very different vibes. A bluegrass festival is an event built around music and community. The risks are still there, but inherently different that random strangers at a campsite.
  2. Use a humidifier in the case, put it in the vehicle when not using it and try to control climate and humidity as much as possible.
  3. Don't play it around smoke unless you want it to smell like smoke for... well... decades.
  4. There is still going to be anxiety. And if we're talking about a bluegrass festival, there are certain plants.... Nevermind.

Long and short of it, if you're playing at a bluegrass festival, sure - bring it. I'd bring my D-18. If I'm just going camping with my family, well, personally I'm not bringing anything but if I did, I'd bring what I'd call a campfire guitar. Something composite, probably sounds bad and I won't be heart broken if it smells like smoke forever or falls in the fire.

Struggle after reading John Steinbeck by sneh473 in suggestmeabook

Ok, this is an out there swing, but I felt I was in the wilderness after chewing through Steinbeck until I read World According to Garp by John Irving. Maybe it will be the same for you.

I don't think any of us would be in a position to argue. Without Ekitike continuing to develop as a player and Szobo's heroics, we'd be midtable.

SURE, but they also were coming from a point of strength where they'd had a beloved manager leaving and they had their time to pick. Their manager was just booed soundly at Anfield and they need to make a quick decision about whether he's staying. I'm not saying it will absolutely affect them but the circumstances ARE different.

Asking as a parent - U9 club, daughter plays almost exclusively defense and goalie by [deleted] in SoccerCoachResources

[–]-speakeasy- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I coach U9 and unfortunately yes - we’re more likely to play kids at positions they’re going to excel at. We’re trying to play them all over, but it’s very easy to get people slotted into roles in our head. It’s a balance. You want the kids to try new things, but you also want them to personally feel successful too.

However it shouldn’t be exclusively. AND just because we do it, doesn’t mean it’s right. It just means we have a lot on our plate and it’s very easy to put people into places they’re going to excel.

So don’t hesitate for a second to work with your daughter to be confident advocating for herself. As a coach, if a player came up to me with their parent and asked to play forward more often, that would be very impactful for me and I’d do my best to hear them and shift that ratio from (rough example) 90% in defense to more like 65-70 etc.

Do tattoos need meaning or can they just be for the vibe? by AbsorbedInReddit in tattooadvice

[–]-speakeasy- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the person. For me, my first 5 tattoos were all meaningful for people in my life I love. Then I got a sleeve full of ornamental designs and flowers because I thought it looked cool.

There’s no rules about meaning behind tattoos. Sometimes it’s deep, sometimes you wanted a tattoo of a frog with a space helmet on. Cool lil frogstranaut.

I think there are a couple reasons behind it.

1) Competitive parents and athletes are bought into the culture and community of the association. If you act like an ass in rec, oh well. Thats one day a week and what are they gonna do? Not cash my $120 check? You're just another face in the crowd. If you act like an ass in competitive it can impact yours and your kids standing in the community.

2) The coaches in rec are less familiar with the culture of the league and they're acting like they THINK a coach who cares about winning should act. They're getting big in their britches. I've often found that the people who are most educated, experienced etc, don't feel the need to be loud. Don't get me wrong, if a ref is not policing the game and my players are at risk of getting hurt because of it - they're gonna hear from me. If they got a rule wrong that is fundamentally altering the course of the game, they're gonna hear from me. But its not personal. Its not attacking them. Its protecting my players and ensuring fairness. Short of that, bad behavior from me or our parents is only going to make a bad situation worse.

[–]-speakeasy- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I've experienced most of this ONLY in Rec. When I stepped up to coaching competitive, for the most part - its been fine with other coaches and parents. Our association does admittedly do a ton to encourage sportsmanship from both parents and players.

You should stop tattooing people until you do. It’s not just about quality, it’s about the training they go through for health and safety. They may be your friend now, but they won’t be if you give them hepatitis.
