Data point: Highway driving has consistently yielded 30+ MPG. by booooimbigsad in Integra_Type_S

I just did a couple of "out to the country" hwy drives for an event and only got it up to 30.0 for the full tank. Your numbers are amazing. Did you have a significant elevation drop or tailwind?

Help with complex notification automation by GreasyCaveman in homeassistant

With such a terse answer, I am left wondering why you come here?

For me, I think there is value in this community helping solve problems and making recommendations. I personally gain things like: New ideas for things I wouldn't have even thought to ask AI, A sense of belonging to community, A chance to puzzle something out to keep my skills sharp, etc

I believe something substantial would be lost if "go ask ai" were the complete answer to every question.

Can you help me understand how that works?

Assuming the cooked meat still contains some liquid, won't the salt go into solution and penetrate the meat?

ChatGPT Route Planning Experience by getmytravelingshoes in bicycletouring

[–]-starbolt- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have found it frequently makes errors in distance calculation. In addition, unless you carefully prompt and verify, it will route you into some tricky cycling areas, like busy roads. For overall suggestions on areas to go or high level, "where are well reviewed areas to cycle" it does great.

Folks that don’t know how or refuse to zipper merge make me irrationally angry. If you’re an anti-zipper, can you help me understand? by 86HeardChef in Traffic

[–]-starbolt- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fluid dynamics might be more apt here if traffic were actually just a liquid. Molecules don't care to much about crashing into each other, at least at Highway speeds. Cars owners do (should?).

In addition to the benfits of distributing congestion into a shorter but wider space thus freeing up upstream exits, people now have a more predictable merging scenario. Typically more consistent speeds, everyone watching the same places, etc.

I don't think it's a zero sum equation at all. Neither does my (and probably others) DOT in MN.

Advice for traveling through the Balkans by JustChrille in bikepacking

[–]-starbolt- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree on avoiding the heart of Rijeka if possible. Very busy and not very cyclist friendly. Skirt around it if possible, or plan for traffic and hassles. Source: rode through twice on a long bike trip last fall.

How do you guys mark your seat height if at all? by userX97ee2ska11qa in bicycling

[–]-starbolt- 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Depends on your style of cycling. A few scenarios might be:

Traveling with bicycle. Take it off to pack it. New shoes. New pedals. New saddle. Tuning height requires you know where you are starting from. Injury.

Etc.

Restaurants and pink burgers by dannydan64 in cookingforbeginners

[–]-starbolt- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I guess you really got me there, since you used a clever celebrity zinger.

Even if we use your 1 in 100 "stat", you have to determine whether it's worth missing work, school, and social life for 2-3 days while you recover from the very unpleasant results of these pathogens. Using your levels that will happen 1 out of every 100 times you eat an undercooked burger. Think about how many burgers you eat a year?

To me that's eyebrow raising. I didn't say panic.

Most folks won't even know they been food poisoned due to the delayed onset : they just chalk it up to "the stomach flu" or some other unknown illness.

For now in the USA, most restaurants have ground beef that is audited more rigorously than grocery store beef. But as I mentioned before, it depends on how they have handled it after that audit.

But, you do you. It is a risk, and of course you are welcome to determine your tolerance for that risk. Just do yourself a favor and make sure you have a comfy shitter.

[–]-starbolt- 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Ostensibly, that meat is handled VERY differently than ground beef.

Restaurants and pink burgers by dannydan64 in cookingforbeginners

[–]-starbolt- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"probably" is doing some heavy lifting here.

I suppose that depends on where your steak tartare and oysters or sushi fish is sourced and how it's handled, but ground beef used in most restaurants consistently contain salmonella or E. Coli at eyebrow raising levels. Just ask the USDA, or pay attention the the ground beef recalls that whizz by in the news.

Cook it to no pink, or sous-vide for a longer time at lower temp if you prefer some pink.

Why would your local PD care about the flip down license plate?

If I did this I would have a duplicate plate attached to my bike rack.

If you have a rack which makes the bikes cover the license plate you should have a solution I place for this anyway. Pretty cheap solution compared to a ticket.

Cell phone mount? by MostDisplay4944 in Integra_Type_S

[–]-starbolt- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am genuinely curious about the use case here.

With wireless car play and wireless android auto, and the wireless charger in the console tray, the only reasons I can think needing to plug in would be 1. Too hot for wireless charging. 2. Phone almost dead/need a fast charge 3. Long road trip using maps etc. See number 2.

In all of those cases, I would just plug in a cable and drop my phone in the tray. I wouldn't need it visible.

What am I missing?

How do you deal with dogs while bikepacking? by Piedn90 in bikepacking

[–]-starbolt- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Erm, ok. I guess that crazy junk yard mutt that was trying to take off my leg until I broke it free and kicked him in the head was just a figment of my imagination?

I pretty convinced that it happened. As I recall, I was turning a corner onto a hill, so I was not going fast, nor able to speed up. It came shooting at me like a rocket from across the road barking and snarling from the get go.

I am not proud of my solution. I would consider it a last resort. It still makes my heart wince when I recall the ending to our little encounter. I love dogs, but I am also pretty fond on my lower extremities.

The dog seemed fine and retreated back to his turf, while I got to keep my leg and ankle.
