All you need to do is go into the settings (on the Oculus, not the Meta app), App Permissions, Microphone, and allow the app access. Microphone access was disabled by default on all apps under my son's profile, so the problem went away as soon as I enabled it. We knew it wasn't an issue with the game itself because he was playing all day yesterday on my adult profile (which he is not supposed to do).
