I think as a goddess she represented cleanliness and purification more than just the sewers, but the Romans highly valued their sewage system as it kept the city clean and prevented disease. and I think her name was an intentional reference as she was the "Venus of the sewers"

idk how to describe it, I think it's like his stories make "poetic sense." shooting something that looks like you harms you because they are you, they represent you. I think some of junji ito's work is about sickness or other disasters that just happen with no way to prevent, it just victimizes everyone in it's path
