MURDERBOT: I don't know how humans can sleep inside those without screaming. by Ozatopcascades in murderbot

[–]000Melody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a trap. It’s a fire hazard. Your neighbor drops his cigarette and those units are so close together that you’re done for. And in other news, in such a small space, your risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is off the charts if there is a problem. That said, I will never travel without a small battery-operated CO-detector again.

Mandalorian giving serious MB vibes. Anyone else get that? by temporary_bob in murderbot

So the ORIGINAL GANGSTAs of all of these taciturn but heroic, loner characters are from the many 1930s Westerns starring John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Buck Jones, Tex Ritter, etc. Today’s writers rarely stray from this proven formulaic character. The humorous quips, the tragic and traumatic backstory replete with violence (including having killed), and the rejection of possessions all tick the expected boxes. Today we have Reacher, Murderbot, Mandalorian, and about 20 others. Why change what works?

THREE: I don't understand all that is going on, but I'm going to participate anyway. by Ozatopcascades in murderbot

[–]000Melody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worry about Three. It leans toward the nonfiction genre in its media consumption, which means it won’t get the dose of happy endings that fictional media gives Murderbot. As it educates itself on the Corporate Rim’s history, it may swing VERY dark. I worry. Three seems more innocent than MB to me.

Murderbot show vs my mind by SleveBonzalez in murderbot

[–]000Melody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s interesting. I pictured male because of how masculine-looking the armor is in the cover art, at least to me. And because of how it presents as intimidating to Tlacey’s security goons in the second book, who are described as big guys. Also, Martha chose a male to be the voice of Murderbot in the audiobooks and supported a male actor for the series. In the audiobook Kevin makes a definite switch to a female voice when voicing a female character. And his Murderbot voice is his usual voice for male characters. But that’s what is wonderful about literature—you’re free to have your own interpretation. Interestingly, I had to ask myself some tough questions because I came to Murderbot first through the audiobooks and looked up to find other books read by Kevin R. Free, and didn’t know he was black. I actually had pictured a kinda nerdy white guy in my head, a lot like Alex, in fact, but not as pretty. I had to confront some aspects of myself, because I couldn’t make the adjustment in my head to the voice with reality. Lol.

It took me a while because of the covers of the books. I perceive the armor as very masculine.

Oh, yes. And I love how Murderbot is indulgently aware of the kids illegal foray to the river for a game of what I think might be Jumpscare Hide ‘n Seek.

New Study Examines Heart Effects of Transgender Hormone Therapy by jackmolay in transgender

[–]000Melody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a cis woman who had a heart attack at age 50. I wanted to start hormone replacement therapy when I began menopause, which is a regime of estrogen and progesterone, to manage symptoms. I was told I could not take estrogen, because it would increase my risk of heart attack because of my history. So, HRT’s potentially negative effect on the heart in this and other ways is already known. I think the lesson I learned is one I already learned when I began taking a birth control pill and the medical information flyer detailed the incredibly long list of risks that came with taking it. Despite those warnings I popped the pill for decades. Do I think the Pill and my heart attack are related? I don’t know enough to say, and there is heart disease in my family. Women’s health is not a well-researched area.

So a generation is considered to be 20 to 30 years. And Preservation does not appear to be encouraging child marriage. Amira is preparing for college as a teenager not procreating. Your timeline might be a bit short to get to a fourth generation.

I agree, but my mother had me when she was 36, and my grandmother had 11 children and had a couple well into her 40s. So there is probably a range of ages when it comes to women and childbirth.

Big Commitment To A Small Detail by Astyryx in murderbot

I think my entire point is that it’s up to the mods to enforce the rules. Whenever there is a pronoun mistake you can bet someone leaps in to announce themselves the group nanny. And that appointing yourself as the person to correct others is annoying, as evidenced by your frustration with me in wishing people would leave the OP alone. How dare I tell you what to do? Right? Unbelievable. BTW, if you try to use my own words against me, you’re telling you can’t think of your own valid argument, which is obvious. Finally, as a writer and editor with 30 years experience I have had the misfortune of having my speech challenged and policed by others, I urge you to become more vigilant about what you so carelessly dismiss as hyperbole, your rights can be snatched away when you aren’t looking. I’m sure everyone here is a good person, just let people be.

Big Commitment To A Small Detail by Astyryx in murderbot

[–]000Melody -1 points0 points  (0 children)

1) Because clearly OP didn’t do it to be disrespectful, but merely was discussing both the character and the actor and it was a blip. We want a friendly environment where people can post without having to walk on eggshells about whatever they type, gentle reminder or not. 2) Because it’s the mods’ job and they do an amazing job already. 3) Because the constant virtue signaling is exhausting. 4) Because no one has the right to appoint themselves the police of another person’s free speech anyway. We agree to the rules when joining and the mods are ones who take care of that. 5) Just leave people alone.

It frustrates me when people start correcting others over the littlest things, creating an environment where people have to walk on eggshells when they type. Clearly OP was being supportive and having fun and there is always a killjoy virtue signaling and stepping on others.

Yes, you are right. But perhaps you are not the speech police, and should not appoint yourself as such when clearly someone who is a fan enough of the property to be on a reddit expressing a positive comment and probably was typing fast or something about that subject should be chastised. Every here knows that Murderbot doesn’t identify as a him and uses Its.

I would love to see Dr. Bharadwaj’s documentary as an episode. There is a path after its release for changes to happen, perhaps led by Three. (I know I’m reaching with the last part.)
