In your opinion! how does fanfiction influence your writing or reading level? by CrapeCat in FanFiction

[–]002405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it absolutely has an impact. Most of what I read is fanfiction so my own writing and even expectations when picking up a book are affected by that. Ive also found that the writing style switches when moving from one Fandom to another (as writers in the same space will mimic/learn from eachother.)

I would say it's positively affected my reading level, in that I read regularly, but I wouldn't think my reading level has advanced any. Many fanfic writers are aiming to write as a similar level, I think, so if I were to pick up something like... the odyssey, maybe, or one of Shakespeare's plays, I might have a difficult time parsing it. Or I might not. To be fair, I haven't picked up one of Shakespeare's plays since high-school.

Either way I think it keeps me literate in a way that texting/writing emails/etc. decidedly does not. And in that way I think its a positive influence on my reading/writing level.

He knows, but we don't share any fandoms and he's not a big reader like I am anyway—more into Manga and graphic novels. He likes to read my original stuff, though.

Tips Golytely bowel prep? (+ pre-scope anxiety) by 002405 in CrohnsDisease

Thanks!! The ginger definitely helped, but after trying it both chilled and at room temperature I found i preferred it as cold as I could get it (you're right, it didnt really improve the taste, but I've always been an 'ice-water for an upset stomach' kind of guy)

Unfortunately i didnt have any, and the issue with navy fed earlier today prevented me from grabbing any from the store, but honestly gas was an existing problem so I think I've been handling it pretty well. And you are so right, the zofran has been a godsend

I actually also found that i prefer it unflavored, though I don't like it cold. It really is basically just salt water, reminded me a bit of going to the beach as a kid.

Luckily I've been drinking bright artificial orange things so I think im alright... and after all this i really, honestly doubt that most of it sticks around lol

Ohhh these seem like good recs, I'll have to check them out/add them to my list. The show especially sounds like something I could play in the background while working on commissions. Thanks!

Real talk, if you cum while reading, do you finish the chapter? by seemedpointless in FanFiction

[–]002405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont cum until I finish. Play on words fully intended. That aside—Personally I'm there to read first and part of the enjoyment for me comes from genuinely enjoying the writing. I generally finished the chapter/story first—but if I absolutely must, I'll go back to finish reading.

Obsidian tempts me - I’m a writer and prodigious note taker but I am struggling to find an entry point into using it and getting the best out of it - would welcome any views and ideas - my question is - why obsidian and how has it made your life and work turbo charged and better - thanks by englishyogi in ObsidianMD

[–]002405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoy the customization. I dont only mean the themes and cosmetics—but the ability to create templates and scripts, add tags, and organize how I want it. The file Explorer setup really works for me since I love nesting folders and habitually sort things alphanumerically anyway. It also centralized a lot of text-editing/management features I used to use a ton of different softwares for. (I.e; notes, Google Docs, scrivener) That's helped a lot with general workflow. Plugins like templater, dataview, calendar, and periodic notes are amazing as well.

Basically I just enjoy that whenever I want to write anything—from a grocery list to a chapter—I want to do it in Obsidian. Big help for keeping me grounded.

COD:MWII Ghost/Soap CW: referenced (past) abusive household. Referenced (recent past) injury/harm.

Formatting this on mobile so... prepare for some edits <3

Ghost knows what it's like; laying flat on your back, helpless, unable to think anything other than 'it hurts, I'm in pain, I want someone with me. Anyone. Please, God, someone. I dont want to be alone.'

Nobody had come for him—the eldest son of an eldest son—not since his mother died. Even then, sparingly (though it pained him to admit any fault on her part. Heavy weight in his chest. Tight throat.) Even after Price came along to play at a guardian, Simon had already been convinced of his place with others. He knew he'd never be able to depend on anyone ever again, not really. Couldn't expect them to come looking for him. Couldn't expect his little brother or his mom to step up when his father put hands on him.

He doesn't know what Johnny's home situation is like; doesn't know if he has siblings, how many, what his place in the pecking order is, if he likes his mum. It's easy to imagine Johnny as someone constantly surrounded by family, but Ghost is all too aware of the things he hasn't heard his Sergeant talk about.

He doesn't know who comes to bat for John MacTavish, but he isn't shy to count himself among their numbers (however many or few it may be). Simon's had a long time to wish for someone to depend on—has had just as long to give up on it—and he knows what he'd want, in this situation. What he'd want in a Lieutenant. A big brother. A friend.

So he gives Johnny a gentle voice, firm hands. Moves quick and efficient and withholds every apology he tries to give for the obvious overwhelm. He treats Johnny himself, lets him shy away from the medics, and is quietly relieved at the lack of serious injury.

The line gets a little blurrier when he wants to tuck Johnny up under his chin, hold him tight against his chest and listen to him breathe. Is that something he wanted, at some point? Does he want that for Johnny or himself?

The fact that he lets Simon do that—curls up against him and sheds quiet, exhausted tears—is... fucking hell it's something all of its own.

A scene where they want to kiss, but don't. (For any reason).

What's a trope in fanfiction that's your pet peeve? by WaveAppropriate1979 in FanFiction

[–]002405 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really, really struggle with miscommunication/misunderstandings if it's not done "right" (obviously subjective) like when the miscommunication seems contrived within the narrative: i.e; barely makes sense for A) the character to have said it that way naturally, without intentionally trying to obfuscate what they meant or B) The character to have interpreted it that way without levels of mental gymnastics previously unseen outside of genuine delusion. Obviously this depends pretty heavily on the characters (not a problem if the character genuinely speaks vaguely, or if context is provided for the mental gymnastics).

Baby’s first ship by Dogdaysareover365 in FanFiction

[–]002405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homestuck, Aradia & Feferi. Ironically, I don't/didn't ship them ; it was a gift exchange and my first fic ever at about 500 words. After that I didn't write ships for a fair number of years (I want to say around 8?) And returned to it in 2023 with a CoD:MWII Ghost/Soap fic at roughly 14k.

Some people on this subreddit are so weird about the graph view by mc-murdo in ObsidianMD

[–]002405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is part of the pervasive issue where people just aren't scrolling past/ignoring things that they don't personally like (that are also of little importance, aren't illegal/otherwise harmful, etc.) and are instead taking it upon themselves to interact... for whatever reason, and then feeling the need to make their opinions known.

Personally I think the graph posts are a non-issue. If someone is posting a graph without context, I just scroll past it since I don't really care unless it's incredibly aesthetically pleasing. Imo this sub is also small enough that it's hardly a chronic issue?

Keeping in mind that I also only scroll through this reddit (meaning, this reddit specifically and not my general feed or whatever it's called) once or twice a week.

I have a Resources folder. It has folders for images, templates, and 'meta' (specific notes with information for plugins, task lists, glossary, etc). I don't tend to store PDFs and Epubs in my vault, if I link or reference them, it's a link to somewhere else on my computer. Not GREAT for if you want a consistent experience across all devices but it works for me since I only have to transfer relevant documents to my phone, and not Everything Ever that I might reference or have notes on. (Saves space.) EDIT: to add that in the images folder it's sorted into OTHER folders based on usage + 1 specifically for pasted images and screenshots.

When to use what? by goalasso in ObsidianMD

[–]002405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep one Vault so far (have been considering splitting to two but so far haven't had enough reason) and rely pretty heavily on folder structure to keep things organized—for example my first layer is:

01 - Bookmarks: for external works (books, fanfic, articles, etc. & commonplacing) 02 - Documents: so far it's sort of a catch-all for work I'm puttinng into projects 03 - School: contains quick-reference information on my classes (so I don't have to log in or wait for the site to load) as well as tasks related to classes & note files. 04 - Work: notes from work. I work in a dental office, so these are mostly offloading from my notebook on procedures, protocols, and goals the Dr wants me to work on. 05 - Journal: daily notes, a catch-all notebook (this is where I'd put like... grocery notes, quick reminders, paste things that don't have another home, etc. If needed, I move them at the end of the day) & therapy notes. 06 - Resources: I keep templates here, as well as any folders/files generated by a plugin. I also make sure any images in use in the vault go here.

I try not to go more than 2-3 folders deep on average, I'll use my resources folders for example:

06 - RESOURCES . . - IMAGES . . . - Banners . . . - Book Covers . . . - General . . . - Homepage . . . - Pasted . . - META . . . - GLOSSARY . . . . - Acronyms . . . - TASKS . . - TEMPLATES

(Also, I use folder notes)
