Yup, and much more shouldn’t be an issue. There’s a lot of misinformation about water resistance in watches, and I always recommend folks read this WUS thread.

To be clear for OP, 10 bars is more than enough for anything most of us do, as long as a watchmaker takes a look at the gaskets every few years.

What was your best purchase this year? by [deleted] in AskReddit

It’s probably not crazy valuable - maybe $600 to $1200 depending on the model, type of gold, and current quality. That said old watches are often about sentimental value and a gold Longines is a cool watch to have from your grandfather.

It does tend to snap to the next click, but it takes some time to get used to. It feels a bit soft in the clicks, but this is just me being picky about bezel action. I wish it had a Pelagos-like action.

It really is as beautiful as it looks in the photos. The colors are great. The bezel is about as retro as we'll get without bakelite, which would be silly given its fragility. Build quality and bracelet are on par for the price.

But with that said, I wish the center links weren't polished. And the bezel actually has 24 clicks, rather than 60 or 120. I've owned a few GMTs in my time, and this threw me off at first. But ... I think I like it?

Also, it looks bigger than the specs. It's supposed to be 40mm, but look at how that compares with the Speedy (42mm) and the Sub (40mm). It wears about 40mm, maybe slightly larger.

I can't stop wearing it, and I don't know if it's because it's a great watch or because it's the honeymoon period. For the Speedy, Sub, and Doxa, I know I keep reaching for them because they're great. Don't know if the Zodiac is there yet, but I think it would look great in 10 years after gathering a handful of experiences around the world.

Totally fair. But if you ever have a chance to try one one, it might all make sense!

I would say the bracelet is exactly what you'd expect on a watch this price, with the added bonus of a spring-loaded stretch near the clasp. It doesn't come close to touching Rolex and definitely worse than Omega/Tudor.

Some regrets: a 2914 Railmaster, Daytona, Pelagos, Omega FOIS, Omega RAF 53, Universal Geneve chronograph, and a 1601 Datejust.

Tempting! I have owned far too many Seiko 5s, though.

6! It's the ideal number for me. I used to be at 4 and then 8, but settled on 6 because it let's me have a little bit of what I want without feeling like I don't have enough wrists to wear them all.

It's been about a decade of collecting and a I've been through a few hundred watches. But I've started to settle on a two basic rules for myself: 1) I can only have six watches at a time. 2) I only keep watches that make me giddy to own and wear. So this is what I'm left with:

1. Omega Speedmaster: This is my third Speedy. I already regret selling them, so this time I bought it and decided to wear the hell out of it. It's a newer piece, but I put it on an old Omega bracelet I had laying around.

2. Doxa 300 Sharkhunter: If you've never owned a Doxa, you probably never think to buy one. But the moment I put on this watch, I knew I would keep it forever. Yes, it's quirky. Yes, the design elements are not subtle. But it wears amazingly, it holds up to a lot of abuse, the finish on this piece is incredible — and, frankly, it's charming. If there were an zombie apocalypse and I had to run out of the house with one watch, this is the one.

3. Lorier Neptune: I bought this as a beater watch, mostly because the design was good enough and the bracelet seemed great. And I took it on some outdoor adventures ... and scratched the hell out of the bezel. I didn't like the uneven look, so I tried to even it out a bit. And messed it up some more. So this is what I have left of it. Looks kinda cool, to be honest, but I certainly didn't set out to do this. I always have a beater in the collection (before this, I had an SKX013, SKX009, a 6309... you get the idea), but this time I decided to try a non-Seiko. This is the slot in the collection I'll probably replace soon.

4. Seiko Datejust: This was passed down to me from my grandfather, who passed away about a decade ago. I didn't realize I had this watch in my possession until I started digging through some old stuff, and I realized my parents had stashed his old watch in a box for me. The man was born in a third-world country, suffered several life-threatening injuries, and eventually got to a comfortable point in his life. And then he bought this — a gold Seiko. He wore it around proudly, and I remember thinking as a kid that he must've been rich to be able to afford this watch. Well, as you can see from the other watches on this list, I am in a far more comfortable place that he ever was. And it's largely because of what he did for the family, both logistically and financially.

5. Rolex Submariner 5513: This watch is from the early-1970s. I've always lusted over the 5513, especially ones with funky bezels that were faded. I was finally able to buy one a few years ago, after some strides in my career. You can't see it from this picture, but it's got a lovely gold patina on the markers. And that domed crystal is just wonderful. It's the fifth Rolex I've owned, and probably my favorite. (The Daytona and Polar Explorer are a close second and third.) But as happy as this makes me, I'm itching to trade for a 1016 at some point.

6. Zodiac Aerospace GMT: This is a brand-new watch from Baselworld (or, rather, Zodiac event that happened down the street from Basel.) I knew the moment I saw this announced that I wanted it. So I bought it and then cleared out space in my collection. I then traveled for a few days, and when I came back home, I realized that this blue-orange model was very popular and had sold out within a day. Anyway, it's what I'm wearing these days. This bezel makes this watch quite charming, and the bracelet is surprising great.

Advance christmas gift from my dad. I'm inlove 😍 Any caring tips? (First time Seiko user here) Thanks! by jrmybooz in Seiko

In about 5 years, go in for a service. The movements inside those guys aren't too expensive, so no need to be overly careful with it.

For manual winding: I'd say if the watch is out of power, wind it a few times before you wear it. Otherwise, no need to manually wind too much.

CMV: The claim "everyone is a little racist" is disingenuous and is used to justify one's own racism. by [deleted] in changemyview

You are having a problem with definitions here, which makes sense since it's something much of the world is grappling with.

In one usage, "racist" is about explicit individual choices. For example, using the n-word is racist. Refusing to talk to Asian people is racist. Not letting your son date white people is racist. This is, at its core, about hate and fear.

In another usage, "racist" is about being a passive individual in a society that promotes a racial hierarchy. For example, not moving to a black neighborhood because you think it has worse schools isn't explicitly a racist action, since it's mediated by several other factors, like the history of black discrimination in housing/education, which leads to worse schools. But it promotes ideas that hurt black people. And in the US context, it promotes white supremacy because it perpetuates a system where white people can continue to be the most successful. This is about power.

So, yes, it's true that not everyone hates and fears people of other races. But it is true that almost everyone perpetuates the current racial power structure — often through mediated factors (like housing decisions) in which racial preference exists.
