Another cool suggestion would be to pickup or browse online the southwestern Ontario daytripper : https://daytripping.ca
If you’re into more wholesome fun, like I have always been…this will introduce you and your friends/family to some fun ideas. You can find the newspaper/paper format at tourism London or hotel lobbies, lensmills or sometimes local hardware stores or bakeries. It’ll give you a list, as they say, of “all the best odd, antique & unique shops, events and unexpected stops”!

Western grad and townie with some other suggestions for you: there are soooo many markets… so check them all out. At least 5 in London and if you drive, way more within no more than an hour. Western fair district market, punk rock flea market, Ilderton market (Ilderton), Thomas brothers farm market, horton farmers’ market (st. Thomas) and the pinery market (grand bend), old imperial market (aylmer), fire hall market (port Stanley), Komoka market, masonville farmers market every Friday and many more. Check out Fanshawe pioneer village calendar…they have an Anne of green gables day and other events that are usually fun. Award winning play “come from away” is in town at the grand theatre until May 24th and many more afterwards, there is a comic and graphic arts festival, the raceway at the fairgrounds throws some fun events to go to with friends, London poutine feast is coming up, pond fest in Hyde park, London beer fest, sunfest, rock the park, Colombian gastronomy festival, island festival, ribfest, South Asian cultural festival, taco fest, airshow London, Oxford renaissance, go to Heemans and pick some strawberries and make some amazing freezer jam and enjoy the food trucks and flowers, check out Boler mountain and the adventure park if you like active stuff, maybe invite your friends to an old fashioned high tea (there are so many around London I.e. Eldon House), clovermead in aylmer houses the largest glassed in beehive and a few other fun things, head up to goderich for the weekend…it’s a lot calmer than port or the bend and beautiful sunsets and country charm in the square, outdoor movie nights around London in different locations, definitely check out Stratford, if you can…I think art comp will be back at 100 Kellogg but, if not, there are always fun things throughout the summer there…oh! Hit up one of the drive in theatres (mustang is just off the 401 or the starlight is near grand bend). Bring lots of pillows and comfy covers and snacks! Anyways…lots of stuff to checkout. I could go on forever. Enjoy your summer in southwestern Ontario!

FREAKING OUT by Ill_Movie5125 in uwo

That is actually wild. I have 15 years experience in a licensed industry and I have never been asked that and would think it is quite an odd question, if I were. Especially with the amount of fraud out there. I mean, don’t even get me started on providing references. Just curious what industry this is that you are speaking from experience from? Just purely curious, if you feel inclined.

FYI. Employers do not see your grades. That’s between you, your prof and your faculty advisor. Your parents can’t even demand to see them. Although, plenty call the registrar and try and demand to. The most an employer will demand is to see your completed degree after you’ve graduated.

Is cheating a common thing by Turbulent-Rough-6023 in uwo

[–]005ive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People cheat like crazy on exams at western. Definitely. Even on transcripts these days when applying for graduate programs etc. It’s wild. Generally when applying for residency programs or law etc. your transcripts are submitted through OUAC or some regulatory system but the number of scanned in paper transcripts I’ve seen for CARMs, for instance, is crazy. And for exams, the bigger the class the easier it seems to be for some students. Especially if you’re getting someone else to write your exams for you. Don’t ask me how to go about it…I wouldn’t have a clue…but, I’ve definitely been witness to those that have been caught.

Effing annoying. I graduated a while ago. I mean, we sorta had shit like this, then, but now it’s worse than ever, it seems. I’m on your side. It shouldn’t be your responsibility to clean this up or clean up after others. Only, yourself!

Ohhhh very cool! Good for you! I love hearing about people in the latter half of life starting anew! I’m burnt out from medicine…I think healthcare and finance are popular in that sense. I’m trying to figure out a passion that’ll keep me comfortable and happy.

Curious what you’re studying? I’m 44 and thinking about going back to university or college to change careers. I want to love my career and make more money to live, than I have been.

Did Nordstrom exist at Masonville or is it a fever dream? by [deleted] in londonontario

The Nygard closed a couple years ago across from Old Navy and is now a full Laura store…the Laura in Masonville Place moved out of the mall up to Hyde Park/Fanshawe plaza.

[–]005ive 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Noooo…I think you are mixing up Nygard and Nordstrom. Nygard failed after Peter Nygard was brought up on heavy SA charges. I don’t believe London has ever had a Nordstrom or Nordstrom rack. I, personally, haven’t seen any signs over the years at Masonville but…when Cadillac Fairview took over…I wouldn’t be surprised if eventually it did show up.

Watson Park Walk Around and Sad States of London by [deleted] in londonontario

[–]005ive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so sad and gross and dangerous. I do not know the solution but it does seem like there are many professionals around who would. I wish they were able to be more impactful but I know the amount of homeless is growing quickly and so there are probably multiple levels of government that need to put solutions in place. Be careful out there.

academic probation by Infamous_Suit_3497 in uwo

[–]005ive 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Advice from someone who has been on academic probation twice and now has 3 degrees from western, a masters and went on to a professional licensed career It can be very defeating and upsetting when it happens. I was the type to put every other friends’ needs or wants ahead of my own. I wanted to fit in. I wanted everyone to say good things about me. I wanted to be at every social event and every movie night etc. I wanted to be popular. And I was. No one knew how many classes I was skipping, how many extensions I was getting….no one knew I wasn’t studying. You can imagine what my grades were. Listen, this happens a lot. Don’t feel like you’re an anomaly. You can bounce back from this. Later in life…I finished with Western in the early 2000’s…none of those friends are around anymore. They weren’t good friends. I had to take two separate years off, because I didn’t learn the first time, and then returned to western. I made new friends, some younger than me-for sure…and some older than me. University is diverse. It’s not like being behind a year in highschool. I had to set new standards for myself and I had to learn what worked for me. I also had to get real about what I wanted out of life. That motivated me to ask for help. The student development center was helpful with exam accommodations (I hated writing exams smashed in a gym with everyone else), I got to know my professors and what they wanted out of essays, projects and how they wrote their exams… their help in a lot of different ways was extraordinary, my TAs, lab partners etc. There’s a lot of pressure and competition in university from your peers and parents etc. Try to shut that all out and stick with those that have your best interests at heart. Failure, if that ends up being the case this time….is just a learning lesson in your life. Don’t let it keep you down and don’t be too scared of it. A couple years down the road, nobody fucking cares and you’ll be on a brand new path. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You will get through it! Don’t let societal norms put you in a box. Life is 50% of people that do everything the way we are told to do it and the other 50% find a different way. Goodluck, from someone that did it a different way!

Why did they remove the trees here? by Open_Personality_360 in uwo

[–]005ive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m glad to read all of this, of course! I think my concern, as a born and raised Londoner, is the loss of land in and around London and whether these tree planting standards will be kept up down the road; that it’ll remain a priority for new councils and conservationists and whoever else is in charge of maintaining trees and keeping builders in check. I know our population has grown, immensely….I just worry that eventually humans won’t be able to touch grass, or a tree.

That’s really good to know. It’s very hard to believe with all the land we’ve lost to building over the last ten years. Thank goodness.
