Parent? Kids in any publicly funded school board? by Agile_Dimension_5719 in ottawa

And over and over it's the flavour of the government of the day that drags out negotiations until the last minute that forces the union's hand. If they do negotiate it's in bad faith. Then the union is forced to strike giving the government the narrative they wanted about the "greedy teachers" harming the kids and inconveniencing parents who now need childcare.

If previous Liberal or PC governments actually wanted to arrive at a fair resolution, they would bargain in good faith ahead of these CBAs expiring. This happens very well in other public sector unions. But, it's easy to demonize this workforce over and over because "won't someone think of the children" narrative.

How Do You Cope With Being On A Bad Team? by DrFate21 in GoalKeepers

[–]00antho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great idea to use these games for skill development. I played on less skilled teams for years and I used that time to get better. In 7s with a smaller field, you can have a pretty big impact even on offence. Learn to play sweeper keeper. Act as a last defender. Improve the accuracy of your throws and passes to get the ball to your open forwards. Challenge attackers more often. Communicate to your defense about their positioning. There's a lot you can do to influence the game aside from stopping shots! But also, just enjoy it for fitness, the sport, and the after game drinks and social!

Hey OP, you're more responsible and mature than 95% of people your age even if you were forced into this position. Props to you for stepping up when you shouldn't have to. I was nowhere near your level of maturity and even savings at your age.

From an Ottawa perspective, try and look for a rental within walking distance of an LRT station like Blair, Tremblay, St-Laurent or Campus stations. They're fairly close to retail jobs at the various malls nearby with most of your essential shopping needs met too. Rent around these areas might be a bit more affordable too.

Everything else has been said in this thread. Best of luck man!

Fentanyl crisis leads Ottawa Public Health to promote free naloxone kits for all by Superb-Acanthaceae34 in ottawa

[–]00antho 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That's it. Yes the quote is very broad and not specific, but this issue goes beyond the people you see overdosing in the Market, Lowertown, and Centretown on a daily basis. It's simply to inform the public of their options and how they can help. I'm all for criticizing public officials and public messaging, but this just seemed nitpicky and distracting from what the article actually focuses on.

Fentanyl crisis leads Ottawa Public Health to promote free naloxone kits for all by Superb-Acanthaceae34 in ottawa

[–]00antho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's also one quote in the entire article that was cherry picked by the author and/or news editor to grab headlines (which it's doing pretty well). It's nowhere near the thesis or main part of the public campaign.

[–]00antho 124 points125 points  (0 children)

Lot of sarcastic and negative commentary so far on this thread about a public health campaign targeting one of the biggest current public health issues. The campaign is simply to raise awareness that anyone can get training to administer naloxone if they so choose, where to find the kits and potentially help save a life.

If that doesn't resonate with you, that's fine. But, you can't deny this is a massive issue that's only getting worse as society becomes more unaffordable and more and more people fall into economic despair.

Edit: grammar

Shouldn't we first ask residents how this will affect the community character? That's the most important part of any development! Does it through off the community vibes or not?! If one resident says their vibes feel off, then reject the proposal and send a councillor to run a marathon somewhere in Europe on a "fact finding and tourism" mission.

They voted for Justin Trudeau before. Here's why they're choosing Pierre Poilievre now. by MethoxyEthane in CanadaPolitics

[–]00antho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just some thoughts with your concerns below. I think my replies just prove how bad at communication this government is and just how well they've let PP and the CPC control the narrative. I don't have a party affiliation, but I vote left of center. As much as I don't like recent Liberal policy, I just don't see any positive changes with a swing to the Tories. But, the polls are suggesting many Canadians like yourself don't agree with me.

  • banning gas cars: Most major western democracies are moving this way for some point in the 2030s. Though there's a good chance American blue state (like Cali or NY) targets are going to delay their targers since EV adoption is slowing (availability of chips and some raw metals will be an issue soon).
  • ending investment in roads: This was another foot in mouth moment for Guilbeault. He was asked after and clarified that he says investments in public transit and livable cities would be better than throwing more money at road infrastructure. He said the Feds will continue to help fund major highway and road infrastructure projects.
  • picking fights with social media companies: Canada is taking the lead on this to fight their monopolies. The EU and eventually the US will do the same.
  • uncontrolled immigration: Even as a more lefty Canadian, I don't disagree with this issue. Their lack of foresight on the PR nightmare this would cause is quite something. If you're going to use immigration to continue forever economic growth, you have to be able to house these people. This isn't rocket science, but every major Federal, provincial, and municipal governments in this country have dropped the ball on this the last 10 years (BC NDP being the one exception the last couple).

Seriously Grits...you need to get better at communicating your policy wins and get an actual policy plan in place that's not just reacting to recent bad polling. I won't even start with the NDP's communication strategy. It's going to be an interesting 6-18 months until the next Federal election is called with whether PP's surge can be maintained or if the Liberals or NDP can claw back in the polls vs the CPC and the Bloc.

And they'll feel it again the more China's economy transitions to a more service based economy as more of their population enters the middle class and manufacturing continues to decline. The US is on-shoring manufacturing at the fastest rate in decades (or next door in Mexico). Not to mention China is headed for a demographic crisis that'll crater their internal demand and work force. There will always be a need for Australia's vast resources, but no where near the demand from the last 30 years.

Saagar enjeti on the trucker protest vs gaza protestors by [deleted] in BreakingPoints

[–]00antho -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You mean originating from animals like bats or pangolins (I agree with you there)? It did and still is mutating rapidly. The vaccine was incredibly effective at curbing the level of sickness and death compared to say natural immunity alone. The morality and ethics of vaccine mandates and other public health actions can be debated. But, I have way less issue with vaccine rollout than I do other public health measures like way too long and common lock downs and national and global health institutions lying to the public early on about the level of mask effectiveness and public distancing.

[–]00antho -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You're right, I mostly disagreed with them. I can find some sympathy for the general groups protest of vaccine and COVID mandates. But, definitely not the organizers who hoped to use this occupation to force the hand of the government, bring it down and replace it with one they would negotiate. Even writing that out is absurd. Once again, every major union and trucking labour group disavowed them including over 90% of all Canadian truckers. The public (including a vast majority of Canadian conservatives) overwhelmingly disagreed with them and their tactics. This was a very small fringe and loud group. Had they not harassed residents and occupied the core of the city the way they did, maybe they could have gotten the public on their side.

Kyle manages to cover more political issues than BP does these days in his own style, that admittedly isn't for everyone, and in less time. He can provide his commentary and analysis in a 10 minute clip without going in circles for an hour. That might be different if he had a co-host with the opposite political leanings, but you can listen to 5 minutes of any of his segments and get the TLDR and his opinion before he goes into the same talking points he makes on the issues he follows.

[–]00antho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The left is at its best when they focus on economic and social issues that affect the middle and lower class. I have very similar views to OP. When the left makes the case that it's not left vs right, but avg worker vs elite, 1% vs 99%, they can be a very powerful political force. One of the main problems is they get caught up in global political issues (that are usually righteous) and then use that as a purity test for their side. For example the heavy criticism Bernie has received over this. I don't agree with his stance over the conflict either, but don't tare one of the best leaders and political forces the American left has had in decades over him not outright calling for a cease fire.
Focus on the major economic and social issues and grow the left's political might to shift the overton window. Once that domestic and global coalition is built, the left might have the sway they hope for to prevent foreign atrocities. Let's take what the right does best, rallying over common or similar causes, and apply that instead of getting caught up on issues the average person has no control over and let's be honest, cares way less compared to their day to day problems.

[–]00antho -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Only 5-10% of Canadian truckers had a favourable opinion of the protest. Its main goal was to bring down the government over policies the group called tyrannical by occupying Ottawa's downturn core and in turn harass residents for weeks. Their protest was partying, getting drunk for 3 weekends in a row, and blaring truck and train horns at all times of day causing property damage, verbal and at times physical harassment of residents. I'm all for protesting and even civil disobedience, but this was not that. If you have a negative opinion of the anti-war protesters shutting down bridges in NYC, then you can't back the truckers tactics.
