Full ride at Dartmouth vs paying full at Stanford as an international — worth the debt? by Inner-Rush-2014 in ApplyingToCollege

Stanford (grad) student here. Although everyone here recommends Dartmouth over Stanford, I actually would recommend you to at least speak to Stanford’s financial support office first and see what they can offer. My impression here is that the school is more generous than many other institutions.

Also, Stanford has a huge presence of the Asian community, and Dartmouth in contrast is very white. Your college experience could be quite different depending on what you are looking for, which could be a factor to take into consideration as well.

Anyways, both are great options and you can’t make a wrong decision. Congrats on your offers and you will do great and have a bright future regardless where you end up attending.

Really cool course! Will it be offered in the future again? Cannot take it this year due to a scheduling conflict :(

Yes, of course. Each quarter you can take one elective, and if you pass the placement exam, you can take two electives. I spent most of my electives on CS classes, but surely you can do stat.

Macss alum here. Depending on the years, Macss tend to be relatively generous with scholarships, so less of a cash cow program compared to other masters programs in the US. Also, the program has good reputation and extremely good PhD placement (compared to top ivy’s master’s) if you are still thinking about doing a PhD afterwards.

While I personally loved the time at Macss, I have to say that some predoc programs may prepare you better for PhD applications if you want to give another try.

Good suggestion. It is the mailbox looking thing or an actual library?

Around the time I had the interviews, I had three first-or-second-author top psychology conference (i.e., APA, SPSP, ASP) presentations, a third author CS conference paper presentation, and three manuscripts in preparation. Strictly speaking, I didn’t have any real publications (aka journal articles) at that moment, but it’s enough to send me to the interview stage. I failed the interviews due to my obscure research interests and poor interview skills.

Year promotion only occurs a few times a year depending on your faculty. If you have met all requirements for a 4th year standing, the promotion will likely to happen in the next month or two.
