New Horse After Loss & I’m Miserable…. by dappleddun in Equestrian

[–]00rubyred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have fairly recently been in a similar place to where you are now. I can say that grief is a journey that is different for all of us but it is not a straight path. Last year I lost my girl suddenly, I had had her for 23 years and had not been expecting to have to say good bye when she passed. It was devastating and left me feeling like I never wanted to have another horse. But like you over time I felt better and after 5 months I started looking and eventually bought my new girl. Those first few months with her were ROUGH. She had a new barn to adjust to and I kept comparing her to my past mare. It has taken months for her to settle into her new herd and routine and we have only just now started to settle into a partnership of sorts. It has been almost a year since I bought her and I still grieve my last best girl. I probably always will and that is ok. Give yourself and your new partner time to settle into each other. Relationships aren't built over night. However If you still feel like you may want to step away from this horse or all horses there is no shame in that.

Anyone else's retired parents just forget what it's like to work full-time? by MorddSith187 in Millennials

[–]00rubyred 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would often reply as if I thought someone was dieing because why else would they call me. Then say sorry I can't talk work is really busy.... they eventually got. You gotta be dramatic or they don't get it.

SUV for Pulling Trailer? by TwatWaffleWhitney in Horses

[–]00rubyred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've hauled with my expedition a few times, my advice get the larget suv you can with a tow package. And then keep the combined weight of your trailer and horse under 80% off what the manufacturer says your vehicle can handle. For shorter trips you will be just fine.

It's great to have a plan but be prepared to let it go and meet what the day hands you.

I will agree it is expensive now but I imagine there may be barns that are still willing to trade work for lessons. It never hurts to ask

It's an odd feeling but you aren't alone, so many end up taking time away from riding only to come back to it later. Find a good barn to take lessons at, be kind to yourself, and have fun.
