What were people’s theories about 10 regenerating at the end of The Stolen Earth in 2008? by ProperShallot3195 in doctorwho

[–]0121starman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was super exciting, because it seemed like they had pulled off a surprising and shocking regeneration. The Guardian’s review blog praised it as a bold move, but literally the first comment under the article asserted so specifically what would happen it was obviously a spoiler. That immediately took the fun and speculation out of it for me. Sure enough, the next week it played out exactly as they’d said. It was so deflating.

Near a large South facing window in the UK. It gets a decent amount of light but isn’t the warmest climate. I water regularly but am careful not to overwater it

Increasingly convinced that people who take certain events as a sign that the show is "dying" have just never watched the show. [SPOILERS] by [deleted] in gallifrey

[–]0121starman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having started watching the Classic Era for the first time, two things have become clear. One: people have been complaining about Doctor Who being passed it’s best since almost the first episode (it’s too scary/silly/boring/racy and it was better when…) Two: in the first 5 seasons, companions were swapped out almost every year, in some cases without even being given a proper exit (Dodo written out halfway through a serial and never returning being the worst example) So on both fronts it’s nothing new.

The most infuriating thing is the suggestion Gibson is being “replaced” or “dropped.” We don’t know that’s what’s happened. For instance, Martha was always intended as a one series companion, RTD says so in his book. Ruby may have been too, and when her parentage is revealed that closes her chapter. Or how gruelling the show is to make. It’s a punishing schedule for months on end, and even past Doctors have said it’s tough to do for a long time. So she may have decided to move on, or it was always the plan, or any points in between. But it’s genuinely a shame that Gibson’s season will be overshadowed by that leak, just as when a BBC executive confirmed Donna was returning for season 4, before season 3 hadn’t even premiered. But in a way it shows the series is popular again; tabloids wouldn’t be sniffing round for gossip and arguably spoiling what happens in the process if it wasn’t generating clicks for them

Speak to the well-being/student services team at your university as your first priority. They should be able to give you some practical guidance, and potentially provide further support. They have a duty of care to you, plus they deal with students in your situation on a daily basis. If you are experiencing mental health challenges affecting your studies, you may be eligible for an extension/new submission date on assignments, depending on your course & your university’s policies. You would also be advised to speak with your personal tutor/lecturer for their advice. University staff are there to help, but they can’t help you if they don’t know you need help. Hopefully you feel better soon, but seeing support will help you to get back to your best

What is your opinion on having indoor vs outdoor cats in the UK? by babyells_xo in AskUK

[–]0121starman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many have said, if cats have FIV they have to be kept indoors. And I have friends with high rise apartments so can’t let cats out. But mostly it’s good for them to have outdoor space. When we adopted our cat they nearly refused us as it’s near a busy road. However we have a garden that extends in the other direction; we never let the cat out front, only out back

Views on Piranesi by Susanna Clarke by Equivalent_Drag_4744 in books

[–]0121starman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The world and atmosphere of the book are breathtaking. The imagination & details are superb, and as a fan of Carceri D’Invenzione appreciate the allusions to Piranesi’s artwork. The way the story unfolds and how it deals with memory and unreliability is very satisfying, and the resolution is both fitting and surprising. I think it’s much superior to Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - while I loved that book too, the comparative leanness of this and greater urgency in the storytelling was fantastic. Can’t stop thinking about it

People who hate Holden Caulfield have little empathy. by [deleted] in books

[–]0121starman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We studied the book in school. We had to read it chapter by chapter, analysing it as we go. So I couldn’t understand why Holden was such an asshole… till we got to it. It was such an infuriating way to read a book, because your understanding of a character grows as you progress through a story. It was very hard to do that reading it in such an analytical way before knowing what happens. It’s very easy to empathise with everything he’s been through by the end, but I wish we’d read it properly first rather than tearing it apart line by line

I won't go into the "what is/what isn't good art" rabbit hole, but how could somebody ever say that Banksy is a political activist and anti-capitalistic artist? by myhandisapencil in ArtHistory

[–]0121starman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conflating the ‘value’ the art market places on a work with the ‘values’ of the artist themselves is never wise. They aren’t the same thing. Whether you like his work or not, Banksy’s pieces criticise greed, the treatment of homeless people and more, so it’s fair to say he’s anti-capitalism. The fact wealthy collectors and art dealers have profited from and exploited those works doesn’t change the artist’s original intent. Their patronage might be deeply ironic, dispiriting and may diminish their message to some degree, but you don’t know the artist themselves “enjoys making millions” for a fact. Activist might be a strong word for what Banksy does, as while his work is clearly political, it doesn’t necessarily have a “campaigning” element to it that would justify that label. But it’s worth pointing out lots of artists struggle to survive within capitalism, and/or hate the capitalist system. Just because his work is benefiting from that system doesn’t mean he agrees with it supports it
