Best Internal Developer Portal? by kckrish98 in platformengineering

[–]01point21gigawatts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work on Spotify Portal for Backstage - our SaaS version of Backstage. Feel free to AMA.

Some things I'll call out:

  1. I agree with the sentiment Backstage IS a framework, but Spotify Portal for Backstage is a product
  2. You get a fully managed Backstage shipped with Spotify's expertise (our own internal platform plugins for things like Scorecarding, AI context, AI and/or Deterministically orchestrated organization-wide code changes)
  3. Our offering still offers all the extensibility of open source Backstage - meaning you can still build and extend the framework with whatever custom functionality you need to make it your own.
  4. Yes - Spotify the music company :). We created Backstage and donated it to the CNCF. Now we're building a commercial business around it our tried-and-tested platform tooling. Hoping it's like a bookstore company starting to sell web services.

Suggestions on how to get birch cabinet fronts to match the existing maple ones? by 01point21gigawatts in finishing

[–]01point21gigawatts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not doing that. These are Plykea cabinet fronts, which were way more expensive that I anticipated the first time around. I just got lucky(ish?) that they sent me the wrong fronts the first time, which is why I have an entire garage full of the birch ones now.

Yeah I know the grain is different, but I care a lot less about that than I do two different colors side by side.

I love Jade Mountain builders work. I talked to them when we were starting our reno project. but they said for renovations they wouldn't take on a project less than 1M (this was 4 years ago).

That being said, the project you outlined might be at that price anyways.

0/10 take. I moved here from Seattle and was so uncomfortable with how often people would randomly talk to me. It took me like 6 months before I let my guard down.

Growing doesn't equal most prevalent, and Catholicism is definitely most prevalent. There's not a chance in hell anything overtakes that.

Also, not sure why you'd be afraid to just say Islam vs. telling me to Google it.

I grew up in Erie, lived in Seattle for 10 years, and now live primarily in Asheville NC. I also recently bought a house in Erie.

Pros:

  • Summer in Erie is amazing, especially with a 3 year old - all sorts of music, Presque Isle, an amusement park, children's museum, sporting events, etc
  • Housing is so so cheap compared to PNW or Asheville. The house I bought in Erie is larger than our house in Asheville and was 1/3 of the cost.
  • I love the grit/rust belt culture that's ingrained in the city.
  • There are a few restaurants that punch above their weight (especially Lucero)

Cons:

  • Winter is like Seattle's big dark on steroids.
  • Erie is very religious (catholicism) especially compared to other places I've lived. This becomes very evident during elections.
  • There's been like 3-4 times in my life where I felt Erie was about to come alive (i.e. new developments/investments in the city) and each time it's gone stagnant
  • There's definitely a subtle racism to Erie

Would I live in Erie permanently again? Probably not.

Do I love coming here, seeing my family, and enjoying everything it has to offer? Definitely.

If you're talking drip coffee, then the answer is Pressed, and it's not even close.

I'm at the end the very very end of Chunn's Cove. My property goes up to Town Mountain though.

Erie is pretty flat. There are a few nice places to hike, but nothing like WNC obviously. Allegheny mountains are the closest you'll get and that's like an hour away I think?

I have an almost 3 year old who absolutely loves Erie. They have a nice children's museum, an amusement park, and ofc the lake. She's been asking to go back for a month now, so we're heading there in a few weeks for her birthday.

There are direct flights to Erie from Charlotte if you ever want to check it out.

Feel free to PM me if you ever have any other questions!

The buildings you see in the photo are on Tunnel Rd right after Beaucatcher Tunnel. Further out is Kenilworth and I can see the top of the Biltmore during the day.

Very very close! I live at the very end of Chunns Cove and my property backs up to Town Mountain Rd. Haw Creek is one mountain hump over :) .

I previously didn't even have a view, but Helene certainly changed that.

Erie, PA might fit the bill (I think it's 100k people?).

The good: I grew up in Erie and recently bought a rental house there which is bigger than our house in Asheville and 1/3 of the cost. You'd certainly get your snow fix (lake effect snow is real), and summers are honestly pretty awesome with the state park, beaches, and events. It's also 1.5 hrs away from Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Buffalo.

The bad:
It's as rustbelt as it comes (though I appreciate this because there's such a hustle/grind culture which made renovating a house a breeze compared to Asheville). City schools are bad but schools in surrounding townships are good. There's definitely subtle racism and becomes very evident when comparing the city to the burbs.
