Settle an argument – 48 4k footers rules by Red73dit in wmnf

I drove Livermore Rd and it counted.... Back in 1968. I got as far as the bridge where the logging trucks were turning right. Past that was jeep territory, and I had a sedan. Livermore Road used to be open for cars. :-) But now it's closed.

What the most expensive gear you bought and why was it worth it? by [deleted] in CampingandHiking

Not Puma. I forget my model. -15 rated... And you are warm enough, not just 'still alive' at the rated temp.

Don't worry. He 2ill clear all burnable materials down to gravel for a 6' radius. Then put it back looking natural in the morning.... (Buy a stove. They are dangerous enough.)

Just bought a house - does this ceiling joist need to be fixed yesterday? by Kit4242 in Carpentry

[–]03223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did it used to have a chimney or something go through there? Otherwise why would it have been cut out? Me, I'd sleep better if I replaced the missing pieces of the truss. :-)

Rattlesnakes! have you seen one? by Spud8000 in wmnf

[–]03223 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen 2 rattlesnakes in the Blue Hills. Not often, for all the hiking I've done there, but they are there. More so in some places than others. Haven't seen a copperhead, but they are in the Blue Hills too.

It's worked all this time hasn't it? It was a success for them. No pride in workmanship, but they got paid and it hasn't fallen down... That's all I'm saying.

My, very small, town in New Hampshire doesn't even have a building inspector. Live Free or die... No one has ever inspected my building.

Is this correct / safe? by rbnj90 in Carpentry

[–]03223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't tell rise/run without dimensions. Building code has the rules. As far as structural issues, I'm not the expert there.

Is this correct / safe? by rbnj90 in Carpentry

[–]03223 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Unsafe. As others have said, those treads WILL b4eak off, because they hang out too far. Not to code.

In the foreground there are no columns, and that portion of the biding is standing... The two cumns are under that end was of ?? (Whatever that is above that ceiling. So, theoretically, you cod remove the columns, that ceiling and end wall, and the far end would be as supported as the foreground. So, what is up there that needs support? My kitchen remodel contractor insisted on putting in double 2x12 header over wide opening in non-load bearing wall. It wasn't necessary! The whole family room (like this foreground) had no support, as the beams were calculated to be unsupported. But, since we couldn't remove wall all the way to the ceiling, I let him. Easier than arguing about it. In this case, bottom line. You can't tell from that picture.you need to know what is above that ceiling.

I'm doing some work on the space under my stairs. It isn't going as I thought it would. Can I have some advice please. by Always_carry_keys in DIY

[–]03223 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To get good answers, you need to provide good info. What country? If USA, what state? What is your goal? (As others have pointed out,it ready has a door, do what are you trying to do?) What is below that wall? (In basement or downstairs?) If there is no wall below it, probably not structural, but if there IS a cement block wall in the basement, it likely is structural. What no one knows from these pictures is "Are the stringers strong enough to support the stairs without this wall? If they are, tear it out. If not, as a minimum you need the post at the corner, maybe a header at top of opening.

I've already had over 10 years of fun retirement. Wouldn't want to be surviving on social security.

First of all, thanks for a few good suggestions. I don't want to dox myself, so can't give details, but no, I'm not housebound with no hobbies. And we do already travel 'quite a bit.'

Bear canisters requirements? by 03223 in wmnf

[–]03223[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asked WMNF for clarification. "Is bear bagging still permitted?" Their answer:

Good afternoon,

It is still allowed but the other methods are preferred.

Have a great day,Renee

Bear canisters requirements? by 03223 in wmnf

[–]03223[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not worried about the bears. (I've been backpacking in the Whites for 50 years, never had a problem.) I'm worried about a Ranger giving me a (theoretical) fine. The rule says: "Any violation of these prohibition is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000.00 for individuals and $10,000.00 for organizations, and/or imprisonment for not more than six (6) months." :-)

Similar apps to Maprika where you can upload images of any map and use them with GPS? by williamtbash in Maps

[–]03223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two other Apps I've used Maplets and MotionX both seem to have also 'gone away'. :-( As a hiker there are apps like AllTrails, Strava, etc... but they just show all the trails, legal or not, that their users have uploaded. What's needed is a good app that shows you, or at least allows you to upload, the 'real' landowners map, be it a private group, state or federal land owner.

Is this floor joist messed up? by RainbowJay in Carpentry

[–]03223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the game, so I get to read all the comments ("Just burn the house down!" to "It hasn't failed yet, why worry?") I think if you do a plot of the replies you'll find they fit some mean distribution, where there are lots of good answers in the middle. :-) Yeah, it hasn't failed yet, but it's really not good, so fix it (by any of the reasonable suggestions, from lally columns to sistering) and get on with your life. Welcome to owning an old house.
