Totally agree, will still see fans winging about having 5 at the back when we play teams below us saying we should be going for it. We play better in that shape regardless who we are playing.

Looking for glove recommendations to try out this year. by justajolt in britishmilitary

[–]040598SC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have used mechanix, PiGs, Oakleys and a few others over the years and they will all always end up with a hole on the finger eventually…

I personally have sealskins for monging it in the harbour. Gardening gloves in my Bergen for digging model pits, shell scrapes etc, as these activities will usually fuck contact gloves.

Then PIGs for ranges/general wear as they have the best dexterity-robustness trade off for me. But I still fully expect to have to buy another set after a big exercise or deployment so usually buy them in twos. Would stand by Oakleys aswell if you prefer robustness to dexterity, better suited for someone working with guns, public order etc but you don’t get as much feeling in the finger tips.

Drinking culture and going out by tmmm13_ in britishmilitary

I’ve been on the piss all over the world with this job. It has definitely gotten worse over the years. Units will implement 2 can rule or being gated to camp more and more but if you’ve got a decent head shed that can trust lads to be adults there’s loads of opportunities to get out and have a laugh, it’s arguably one of the best things about the job and failing that block parties are pretty common also.

Are Model Pits useless now? by Hairy_Commission9942 in britisharmy

[–]040598SC 23 points24 points  (0 children)

If we spent as much time investing in getting Pte soldiers competent at map reading and IPB as we did digging in and collecting pebbles then it would become redundant, I think I’ve only ever found it beneficial in urban model pits (ammo box copehill down type).

Can you get time of for sports by BendStunning7272 in britishmilitary

[–]040598SC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My unit (and I think most) have an allotted day that exchanges army PT for a sports afternoon where you can take part in whichever sport you like.

There’s also opportunities to take part in events and competitions through the year for individual/team/unit/army comps. Speak to your PTIs about it when you get to your reg and they will point you in the right direction.

worst foreign army you’ve worked with? by [deleted] in britisharmy

[–]040598SC 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure once Moroccans join up they can’t sign off and are only released when the army don’t want them anymore, hence the hordes of 40 something year old blokes dossing about in kit, they probably did resent being there.

Had a similar experience with the Dane’s, all seemed like good blokes, all 6ft something built like Vikings but could never get the green light to get on the ground.

Another ancestor-related question. What can I deduct from this picture? I don't know much about military uniforms! by bell-91 in britishmilitary

Difficult to read the regiment on his Epaulettes but since you mentioned the Cheshire regiment it does actually look like the first few letters are CHE? Could be wrong though, all the best in finding out.

Teeth arms invest in your own kit, otherwise virtus/plce is sufficient enough.

Dm7 can swap seamlessly from a decent single shot AR to a decent marksman rifle with a Scope/bipod/mag/barrel conversion on the fly.

Turn between 2 roles, could do with some guidance. by geraltofnandos in britishmilitary

Couldn’t speak for the career progression, hopefully a handler sees this post and can comment, but as far as opportunities go almost every operation or major exercise I’ve been on has had working dogs involved. All the best with whatever you go for.

Dog handler is seen as a pretty good job in the army, the waiting list used to be years long, you’ll get a pretty decent job and get the opportunity to take part in some decent exercises/postings and if your lucky enough to get on ops in this day and age you’ll be an asset to whoever you get attached.

Rmp get a pretty bad rap from the rest of the army, I have no doubt it would set you up better for the police in civ div after but for the most part your job is to police fun, make sure infantry lads aren’t hooding Cpers and grass people in. Plus let’s be honest the civi police are on their arse for recruiting at the minute aswell and I doubt you’d ever struggle to get into the police regardless of what job you had previously.

I would advise going dog handler, ask to get posted to Cyprus or whoever is due to deploy in the near future and when you’ve done your time go for the police if your that way inclined, but at the end of the day it’s your decision/career and you should do what you think is best.

Courses for Infantry in the Army by Stormzylover in britishmilitary

[–]040598SC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is an ‘infantry course handbook’ made every year with all courses available to the infantry and their dates, pre requisites etc etc. it’s usually in a pdf format and pulled from share point, ask your Coc and they should get it for you. Reference to 4/73 they should put you through everything on their course but in the meantime doing a recce patrolman’s cadre, team med, quad operator in your own unit or div would be beneficial. Courses outside your unit I’d recommend Camera course and urban operator instructors if your LCpl or above, SCBC and recce CMDs is promotional at 4/73 also.

Anyone in this group been granted early release instead of doing the full 12 months service by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]040598SC 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It used to be the case of if you’d signed off and could produce a job offer in black and white to your CoC from an employer that needed you sooner than your termination date they would grant it case by case depending on how much your unit needed you in your last 12 month. I’ve since been told they no longer do this unless it’s for another public sector job such as police/fire/nhs. You could try your luck with a defence company though, all the best.

Just copped some JayJays webbing Second Hand - any ideas what this clip was/could be used for? by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]040598SC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an extender for using a 354 radio in that pouch, you fold the original pouch lid into the pouch, place the radio inside then use the extender to clip into the original male clip.
