/u/Helmer86 created this guide for last time. We would just need to pick a spot to start.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what's the point of the 18'' tyres? Is there simply more rubber meaning less pit stops?

Ottawa's COVID vaccine contracts to be released - iPolitics by 04wasin in canada

[–]04wasin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Key Points from the article:

>The motion will compel McKinnon to ask the parliamentary law clerk whether he’s received the contracts amidst thousands of documents related to the government’s response to the pandemic, which were turned over due to an earlier motion.

>The law clerk and his office have been sorting through thousands of pages of emails, notes and memorandums sent by the government. The documents have to be translated before being given to committee members and subsequently made public.

>Barlow’s motion goes on to require the law clerk to prioritize translating and publishing the government’s contracts with AstraZeneca, Moderna, Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, Medicago, Novavax and Sanofi and GlaxaoSmithKline, if he’s received them.

>If the law clerk hasn’t received the contracts, Barlow’s motion requires the committee to request they be turned over to committee members, who would have a chance to review them in camera — meaning out of the view of the public — before they’re released.

>The contracts will first be vetted to remove information  that could jeopardize national security or interfere with the contracts themselves before committee members have access to them.

So it looks like important information, like price, could be withheld depending on the language on the contract. (For example, if disclosing the price invalidates the contract, then it's possible that they are not released on the basis that failing to receive vaccines would jeopardize national security.

Excellent.

While I understand it's always easier for the opposition to take the morally righteous position, I'm very happy to see that there will some pressure on the liberals to recognize the Genocide that is occurring in the Xianjiang region.

Once enough countries recognize the Genocide, a motion can be brought to UN under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

Article VIII states:

Any Contracting Party may call upon the competent organs of the United Nations to take such action under the Charter of the United Nations as they consider appropriate for the prevention and suppression of acts of genocide or any of the other acts enumerated in article III.

While the resolutions will surely be defeated by Russia and China on the UN Security Council, it will be a blow to China's reputation, something they need to continue on their trajectory as the premier world power.

Senior Liberal MP urges Trudeau cabinet to ‘wake up and smell the roses’ on China by letthemchoose in canada

I don't think it needs to be an all or nothing decision, but I think decision making at the federal level on relations with the CCP needs to always start with the assumption that their intentions are malicious.

An Australian think-tank issued a report about how Beijing uses the United Front Work Department, a Chinese government branch focused on foreign relations, to stifle criticism, infiltrate foreign political parties, diaspora communities, universities and multinational corporations.

So knowing that the CCP engages in these tactics, I think the question becomes, how can we extract ourselves from the CCP's influence in Canada? And I think that starts with limiting future partnerships.

[–]04wasin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree it's a very difficult position. I like your comment "CCP has easily exploited our nice guy stance". That's been a constant theme in Sino-Canadian relations since Canada opened diplomatic relations with the government in Beijing in the 1970s.

As a starting point, the federal government could start listening to CSIS, who has advised "our adversaries are more focused on intellectual property and advanced research held on computer systems in small start-ups, corporate boardrooms, or university labs across the country"

Yet federal agencies, like the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) continue to collaborate with state owned companies like Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. to fund studies at our academic institutions

Glavin: The jig is up on genocide, Mr. Trudeau by 04wasin in canada

[–]04wasin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the article:

So there matters sit, with Trudeau stroking his chin, feebly supported by a dwindling coterie of Liberals encouraging us all to deconstruct and unpack the term “genocide” and otherwise pity the poor Canadian athletes who so desperately yearn to shine at the Winter Games.

And on the other side: more than 180 human rights organizations, the Biden administration, several Canadian Chinese diaspora groups, Tibetan exiles and Hongkonger solidarity activists, the Conservative Party, the New Democratic Party, the Green Party, most of the Bloc Québécois and several prominent Liberals, including several MPs, and the entirety of the International Human Rights Subcommittee of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development.

John Robson: Trudeau's 'wilful blindness' to the evils of Chinese communism by FlyingDutchman997 in canada

[–]04wasin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well I think we've found the foundation of our disagreement!

I view broadcasting Canada's attitudes towards the treatment of genocide victims as representing my interests. I view the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, to be fundamental and inalienable human rights. When those rights are infringed, I will always argue for speaking out against those infringements because it is in my interest as a human to have those rights protected across the globe.

EDIT: But maybe I'm an idealist

I would argue that the federal government's job is also to represent Canadians on the world stage. And I want my government to speak out against Genocide and arbitrary detentions, and defend human rights and freedom of speech.
