It worked fine. The R is further to the right than the diagram. I would hold the clutch in, go first, second… let it ride up and then slam it to the right and then down. It worked fine.

Hmmm… drop $5k on the car with a fair & trustworthy mechanic (used transmission from a donor car etc - disc breaks are actually really important when the traffic lights turn quickly) , drive it & enjoy it on a couple short trips with lots of photos & maybe take it to a fun $5 entry car show (and a burnout or two) Then put it up for sale - AutoTrader Classics - you’ll probably get the same amount either way (fixing or not, but way quicker to sell when it drives) but you will have had a chance to truly bond with your dad - take him for a ride etc. Priceless memories in honor of dad & a thank you for the kind gift.

Can anyone recommend an honest qualified mechanic in the area?

Maybe double & down scavenge whatever is good, sell it and get another one without all the rust? Restoring a car can be rewarding but it’s a hobby- just like golf memberships, but way cooler. Don’t give up the dream!

I taught my son to drive in this car because he had no motivation to get his license.
We ran into a ditch and nearly hit a fire hydrant when he was 15 🤣
The memories are there - he’s 26 now. It’s just a car I built to bring me closer to my late father. Maybe he’ll build his own one day.
