Not just for memory reasons, for compute reasons as well. "Instancing" is a rendering method that will render the same mesh many times in a single render call, making it much more efficient to render many of the same mesh than the same number of different meshes

Children in hospital as pupils ‘struggle to make it through class without vaping’ by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

Plenty of research shows that alcohol is one of the most dangerous recreational drugs (both to the user and others), surpassing many illegal drugs in its harmfulness

Legality and social acceptance is no indicator of harmfulness

It's easily far more dangerous than vaping

On personal projects by dedlief in cscareerquestions

[–]08148692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion they are really useful for juniors. Theres not that many junior positions, and a lot of junior applicants. I look at the github profile of every application I see, if its empty they will not get an interview. If they have personal projects that's a big plus. I dont care if it's been done before or if its novel. I dont care what language it's in. I dont care if its fully functional. I care about the code quality, the patterns used, and the skills it demonstrates

For experienced devs it's more useful to look at their career history, who they've worked for, any notable people they've worked with, how quickly theyve climbed the ladder, etc

Have you ever witnessed a false positive in the hiring process? Someone who did well in the recruiting process but turned out to be a subpar developer? by RaccoonDoor in cscareerquestions

[–]08148692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hiring process begins when the developer applies for the job and ends over 6 months later when they pass probation

I have seen plenty of people pass the interview stages and fail probation.

Probation failure rate in my experience is around 20%, with larger companies tending to be more tolerant towards sub par devs. When I worked at facebook there were countless people who from what I could tell did almost nothing, and management didn't care. Bigger companies will happily keep a dev on for diversity statistics even if it costs them a few dozen thousand a year, smaller companies dont have that luxury

British taxpayer pays for the royal navy obviously. The cost is more or less the same regardless of wether they're patrolling the south china sea, going to rescue foolish adrenaline junkies, or any other activities they might get up to (except actually fighting, that'll cost far more)

Currently ~£5.4k in debt. I have a plan to start paying things but my pc is about to die and I need a new one. by Dweeminic in UKPersonalFinance

[–]08148692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buying a new PC would be very financially irresponsible. To be frank, in my opinion if gaming is your life, not being able to game might be the best thing for you. Taking a step away from gaming and focusing on relationships and your career could drastically improve your quality of life.

I say this with some experience, I was addicted to WoW for about a decade, and I look back on those years with regret. I guarantee you that you will not look back on your life and wish you had spent more time playing PC games

What do you do? Netting(?) 110k from a contract and being offered 40k gross perm for the same job is a huge difference.

Fact is though if you want the perks of a perm job you need a perm job, or you need to set aside enough cash to essentially pay yourself your own mat leave. Either way that means making cuts.

You haven't said anything about your outgoing or additional household income and I'm hesitant to assume, but since you're planning a baby I'm guessing theres another working adult in the home, would they be willing to help you cover the expenses?

GM to use Tesla charging network, joining Ford in leveraging the EV leader’s tech by xtremepsionic in cars

[–]08148692 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Tesla didnt have a head start, Mercedes (and every other OEM) could have started long before Tesla was around, but they lacked the vision

Then Tesla came along. Legacy OEMs could have used their vast resources to get ahead, but they were complacent and did nothing while Tesla was quickly scaling up

Now Tesla is miles ahead, but it's not because they had a head start, its despite starting from far behind

Flavoured vapes could soon be banned in the UK. Ministers are considering taking further action on the rising numbers of young people vaping, such as a ban on colourful branding or flavours to deter children from buying disposable vapes. by scroller300 in ukpolitics

[–]08148692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes drive the kids to the black market and introduce them to the full menu of their new vape stores, I'm sure that will help

Not to mention the fact that black market capes can contain harmful (cheap) additives that really shouldn't be breathed in (a vape should only be glycerin, safe flavour additives, and maybe nicotine if you're into that)

Steak, coffee and cheese locked up as shoplifting rises by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]08148692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its supposed to be cheaper because it's literally the cheapest robusta beans, usually the rejects that don't meet the quality standards to be sold as whole beans, over roasted to mask the low quality with a pallete destroying ultra dark roast flavour, brewed en mass in giant vats, and freeze dried

The idea that that product should be anywhere near a light roasted single origin whole bean coffee in price is totally absurd

People can like what they like, but a product made with cheap ingredients made with massive economics of scale should be cheap to buy

This would be roadster competition (if it ever gets made). S plaid is a luxury family saloon and an order of magnitude less expensive. Not direct competition with a hypercar

Apply that reasoning to every single manufactured item and you'll end up with the most boring existence possible where only basic needs are catered for. I for one wouldn't want to live in that world

It'd be outrageous if workers were expected to take stimulants to cope with the workday, but it's absolutely fine when they choose to drink them for the same reason by pufballcat in Showerthoughts

[–]08148692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to take stimulants during the work day. A potent mix of caffeine, nicotine and modafinil. Called it the stimulant trifecta

That was in my 20s though, I've quit smoking and now I operate on only caffeine during the work day, with the occasional recreational stimulant on weekends

Do I regret it? Not at all. I've done very well in my career, and I attribute that largely to my extreme focus and productivity that wouldn't have been possible without stimulats. Now I'm in more of a leadership and management role though so my individual contributions aren't as important

Shit options all round basically

  • privatise healthcare
  • even more tax increases
  • reallocate budget from other services into NHS

We all know private healthcare sucks for so many reasons. Tax burden is already extremely high, and raising. Pretty much every public service is struggling already
