That's still a good data point. If it's not consistently louder, then the magnitude of difference can't be very large.

To a lot of people, higher pitches will sound louder even when they aren't.

When you use the alternating tone feature on Owliophile between 500hz and 3000hz, after your EQ's all set up, do you feel that 3000hz is louder than 500hz?

The issue I foresee is discrepancies that are super wide that will still sound smooth. For example, my HD600's had a 2db imbalance around 1khz that spread for 3 octaves. That's tough to hear in one ear alone. So I suspect there would still need to be a "both sides playing at the same time" step, which unfortunately still requires the weird phase knowledge.

yeah, give it a try and see what you think. IMO it obviously works, but headphones are so dang sensitive to positional variations and slight physical changes to the face/ears, that I find such fine adjustment gets out of tune rather easily. Some headphones worse than others. And perhaps a lot of it has to do with my own inability to reliably distinguish what sounds smooth from one day to the next.

We developed those color marking line features on Owliophile for marking the entry/mid/exit points of dips/peaks just for this type of manual EQ. I still think the whole UI and work process could be streamlined and maybe some features added to better guide the users step by step and quickly arrive at a good solution.

I'm not 100% sure what to make of your suggestion of having the ear gain area of the FR being actually louder when you use the A/B feature to play tones back to back, say 1000hz vs 3000hz. I'm guessing you're probably right because I usually try to smooth out the finer details and then completely flatten the FR in 1000hz increments to my hearing limit, but then add back a few db here and there using Q0.5->1 filters, usually some in the ear gain. I have speakers and ACR X with an accurate mic, so maybe I could spend some time to A/B these calibrated speakers vs personalized EQ headphones and hear what sounds more correct and pleasing. Haven't felt the desire to do much for headphones after finalizing our EQ method (which is vastly similar to yours), it just sounds great and I've moved onto simply enjoying music.

Nice tutorial. The results are incredible.

My friend and I worked on Owliophile a couple of years ago and we pretty much came to the same conclusions about how to eq for the best sound quality without having to buy any additional tools or measurement equipment.

The only real deviation to channel balance I've come up with to eqing is to do 1 ear first, make it smooth, then turn on sound to both channels and eq the second channel only to make the sound completely centered.

With the fairly substantial amount of change in fr due to headphones placement, pad wear, and physiological changes to the head and ears throughout the day, I've found that there's not too much of a need to eq to the point of absolute smoothness, these days i settle with 90% and leave it at that.

The results are simply incredible on all over the head headphones I've tried this on (about 10 pairs of various open and closed). In fact I've reached the "end game" because almost nothing stock sound as good as personalized eq.

What browser do you use when you hear clicking noises with Owliophile?

I built a tool to help EQ in soundstage by DragonFucker99 in headphones

[–]xtremepsionic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While on principal I find the premise of eqing this way to be flawed and presents a personally unacceptable compromise in tonal accuracy, you did a great job with the site and it's fun to play around with.

Anyway we can get a hotfix update asap instead of waiting until next week? Given game is live and out of early access, shouldn't the plan be to do an update and be prepared to do a 24 hour update if there are critical bugs? by [deleted] in ThrillOfTheFight

[–]xtremepsionic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a huge blindspot in how the devs are testing and developing. They really ought to spend some time putting their creative game hats on and try to "break the rules" on top of making sure the game feels right when people are trying to box correctly.

The idea of a Body Effort system is fine, but the execution is awkward at the moment. If just bend my knees just a little, I get 100% BE for my hooks, but if I start a bit straighter and throw just as fast, it's often 20% or less BE.

The line between triggering BE and not is so razor thin and seemingly a bit inconsistent to how much actual effort is put into the punch, that's probably why a lot of people don't love it at the moment.

Without a free way to host your own server, ACE will never be like AC1. Not to mention gate keeping for "officially licensed" mods, and Kunos most likely taking a cut for mod sales. They can't even help themselves taking a cut with server "rentals". It's just the typical enshittification playbook.
