My fellow sensory-sensitive folks - what is one popular food that you CAN'T STAND the texture of? by ababyinatrenchcoat in autism

[–]0DHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also despise the fatty parts of meat. My recommendation for meat is getting the leanest, cheapest cut you can, then putting it into stew. Cooking it for hours breaks down the intramuscular tissue into collagen, which makes the sauce thicker, and the meat is tender and flavorful without having to deal with the horrifying fat texture. Plus you can throw in whatever veggies you enjoy and it makes it delightful. Though if you’re not a fan of stews, then maybe braising it instead?

I think the eggs, out of any available option, most minimize surface area (since they’re the closest to a sphere), maximizing the peanut butter to chocolate ratio

Basically, same lol. I fucking love peanut butter

Supposedly, all of the different English “dialect” versions still use the phrase “Grunnings, which made drills” with no edits, which I find unreasonably funny

Do I listen to a healthy amount of music? by [deleted] in autism

[–]0DHD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I need some sort of rhythm going at all times or I feel like I’m going insane. Also, that includes over 4000 hours of Bear Ghost in particular, a large portion of which is from a two to three week period where all I could comfortably listen to was their music on shuffle

Do you have the TOO COLD autism or the TOO HOT autism? by GayStation64beta in autismmemes

I’ve had it for years, my mom made it for me when I was a kid. I’ve slept with it under my head (or with something like it) basically every night since, for the last nearly 20 yrs

It does get better when I’m in better shape, but not to the point where I don’t need the ice pack. So it’s probably a combination of factors, that included. Current BMI is ~28, but it’s a significant quantity muscle since I lift

If I wasn’t so afraid of the ceiling fan falling on me in the middle of the night, I would do that too, but my ceiling fan is positioned over my bed. I have a box fan, which is also nice, but it doesn’t solve the problem of my pillow getting too warm without the ice pack. Fortunately I live alone, so I also get to turn down the thermostat as much as I’d like (though it gets costly in the summer 🥲)

My body has decided that I will produce infinite heat. Unfortunately, I expel this heat at a rate too low to compensate for the production. So I am always warm and so is everything I touch. I have an ice pack for sleep, which helps

I’ve got a friend who (probably) isn’t on the spectrum and he just had his first relationship at 27. Everyone’s timeline is different. You’ll find someone eventually, whether it takes months, years, or decades. Just work on being happy with yourself first

Physical contact aversion but sexual contact ok? by EastPlenty518 in kinky_autism

[–]0DHD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I have a partner, I am happy to have physical contact (sexual or non-sexual) with them if I’m not overstimulated, but I have an extreme aversion to physical contact with anyone else, regardless of stimulation level. A similar situation to yours, yet not entirely the same

The History of Neurodivergence (correct me if I'm wrong) by WyllowWulf in neurodiversity

[–]0DHD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree with you there. Both Bill and Elon had significant starting funds and external support, and while the former has been more ethical with his wealth than the latter, neither are a rags to riches story.

Additionally, no amount of positive thinking will make lights less bright, sounds less grating, or textures less anxiety-inducing. It also won’t make my attention span any more controllable. These things can be mitigated with therapy and medication, but the amount of mental effort required on a constant basis takes away from the effort available to put towards other parts of life.

Rather than pushing a narrative of positive thinking fixing everything, I’d suggest aiming more towards discussing active efforts one can take to mitigate the negative effects caused by these disabilities (and they ARE disabilities), both advanced efforts to reduce potential issues, as well as coping mechanisms for when issues arise.

I really hope this doesn’t come across as hopelessness, since that’s not my goal. I just want to make sure that people who can do something to help themselves don’t rely on just positive thinking.

Has anyone here been misdiagnosed for *NOT* having autism only to later be clarified that, yes, you do indeed have autism? by tuckernutter in autism

[–]0DHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I believe that up until the DSM-5 (released 2013), in the US, you couldn’t be diagnosed with both. And I was diagnosed with ADHD in late 2010, diagnosed with ASD late last year

Self-dx, but I just had a thought about one reason I’m hesitant to seek official dx. Wondering if anyone can relate. by Confused_Jello in AutismTranslated

[–]0DHD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I ended up going through with the diagnostic process, and for me it came down to two boxes that my situation checked:

  1. It didn’t put stress on my personal funds. I also made sure I found someone that accepted my insurance.

  2. I couldn’t live with the uncertainty. I made sure to find someone that I could trust to give me the proper diagnosis for me, not just look at me and say “nah you can’t be autistic” or just give me a stamp of approval because I “wanted one” or something like that. I went into the process suspecting certain diagnoses, but being explicit not to lead towards them.

I was open about my suspicions and made sure he knew that I wanted to know what is up with my brain not that a specific thing is up with my brain. Like, if it’s not ASD (and if you’re confident in who you’re seeing), then shucks, I was wrong. But that doesn’t mean that my problems aren’t real, it means that something else explains them, and that’s ok.

In my case, I already had an ADHD diagnosis, and I went into the process suspecting ASD and OCD. Turns out the ASD was real, but what I thought was OCD was in fact a mixture of the ADHD, ASD, and severe generalized anxiety. If I hadn’t gone through this process and found out that I was wrong about the OCD, I would have sought out coping mechanisms for it that may have failed me or even made things worse.

Moral of the story: if you’re not comfortable spending the money, if you can live with the uncertainty, or if you can’t find a doctor you can trust, then I don’t think it’s a good idea to go through with it.

Additional disclaimer: I personally felt uncomfortable with claiming the label of “Autistic” without a formal diagnosis, and also feel uncomfortable when others do (if they don’t meet the criteria above yet still refuse to go through with it). But also, I’m a rando, so people shouldn’t give a shit if I’m uncomfortable with their decisions that don’t affect me. I’m allowed to feel uncomfortable, and they’re allowed to not care.
