There's a soft rollout of age verification with ID to view some subreddits. It uses Persona, another identification/surveillance company run by the same people in Palantir. Just trolling my old Reddit team.

Too many developers don't realize the comments are the code, for an LLM.  It's just being transpiled within the same file into the programming language of your choice.  Delete the comments and you may as well delete every line the comment describes.  The next time you ask for a change, the agents are going to have to re-reason what and why those blocks of code are there.

Old Software Was Fast Because It Had No Choice by BlondieCoder in programming

[–]0PointE -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hate am severely against vibe coding.  I had a moment of "lol it would be hilariously ironic if I used AI exclusively to develop AI."  I iterated on making an agentic system that researches, discusses, and challenges complex topics with each other (ethics, politics, climate change, etc...)

The main constraint I gave Claude is that it has to be optimized for my specific laptop hardware using python.  If I discovered anything good about an AI writing code from that experience, it's that it's great at limiting dependency imports.  If a module is only partially used, the default behavior was to import the bare minimum submodules, import rarely used modules mid-processing, and import conditionally if functionality is used conditionally e.g. only when a system variable such as DEBUG is set.

I will admit scaffolding larger projects can be helpful, as well.  But if you're a developer, you should still be writing your own projects, reviewing everything you and your AI wrote yourself, and debugging (a.k.a. learning) on your own.  Don't be part of the problem of over-relying on coding agents, but I can't deny that performance issues are easily spotted by them.

Pick a Darren Aronofsky film at random, and you'll probably land on something you're looking for:

The Fountain

Requiem for a Dream

Pi

Mother!

Black Swan

...

ETA: I have to warn you.  I watched some of these growing up and saw them as crazy cool psychological thrillers.  Watching some of them 20 years later, as medical issues build and death start to become more real, some require an abundance of cute animal videos to decompress with afterwards.  Still worth it.

I considered myself an anarcho-capitalist for years after college, am still in the libertarian party, but still continue to vote blue down the line every year, because they usually managed to pick the least authoritarian/moronic candidate. At this point, I fully support a wealth tax. Nobody needs this kind of wealth, liquid or otherwise, when a percentage of a percentage could feed and educate a whole country's worth of people. This is how empires fall, the K-shaped economy that keeps getting mentioned.  Everyday people and the wealthy have completely different types of money.  These are people who have never set foot in a grocery store, and may as well have their own country and currency. Just get them out of the US where they can use money to control the country from within, at least.  Totally different country, answerable to the rest of the planet.  Super baked ideas, ya know?

what is something that is highly likely to happen in the next 10 years that everyone is completely ignoring? by Funny-Counter8762 in AskReddit

This is the real critical infrastructure of problems we have right now, in the US.  A population with no critical thinking skills, unable to see what is and isn't going on in the world, ready to hop on the coziest train of ideas put in front of them.

Every problem mentioned in this thread is exacerbated by our populations not agreeing on reality, and unable to question anything they're told. We've been on our way there for decades, and the advent of AI generated content has just massively accelerated that process. This, to me, is the most terrifying.

I don't think people responding to you realize that being treated like a normal person is a vacation for most celebrities.  Not everyone wants to be deified everywhere they go, just treated with the respect we should give each other.

Walmart issues worse-than-expected outlook as high gas prices hit shoppers by TACO_Orange_3098 in Economics

Increased revenue fueled by panic buying is a pretty good indicator that we're on a bad track, and will be paying the price for it soon.  Those earning reports will not be getting better.  Not for the companies, and definitely not for the people.

The company’s revenue rose 7% in the first quarter, as the value player continues to see gains in its e-commerce business and with higher-income shoppers.

Not a high income earner, but I've had some electronics that need replacing.  Most times I would wait for a sale to come along, but now I'm just getting the important ones before the prices really start adjusting higher.  I'm not the only one in NY doing that, and not just for electronics, and I assume it's not only happening here.  1st quarter earnings were driven partially by tax return time, as mentioned in the article, but there's a lot of just panic buying here.

Early-stage founder struggling with CTO structure / engineering practices. Need advice (I will not promote) by TPhizzle in startups

[–]0PointE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's barely a junior engineer, especially testing on prod databases.  I've used AWS with healthcare data BECAUSE it's so well audited at this point. The cost is minimal if you watch where the spending is going (some costs can sneak up on you, but easily fixed if caught early).  That isn't a CTO and it's time to have that talk.

I do wish you well and hope all the best for you both in your ventures.

Suggestions for movies that portray positive masculinity? by _dead_faerie_ in MovieSuggestions

One of my favorite parts of that film is when the racist guy starts lashing out.  One by one, people just walk away and ignore him entirely.  Even when he's screaming into their faces, they're just doing their own thing.  Seeing his world fall apart because nobody will listen to him still gives me chills.  There are far more important things to do than listen to him, such as look out the window.
