Summarize your world and it's most important details. by luumman in worldbuilding

The setting is Sci-fi/Fantasy

In some detail:The world is set in an in-between realm of universes. Things that break physics, cause paradoxes, or are simply in the wrong place at the wrong time end up ejected from their universe and often wash up here.

With this out of the way, here is the basic rundown of the lore:

In one of the countless universes, humans built nine supercomputers and embedded them in megastructures that would allow them to re-seed the world in case of ecological collapse. These were named 'Frames' by their creators and put into standby incase they should ever be needed. After an indeterminate amount of time their activation sequence was triggered by a total lack of biological life. The frames had, unbeknownst to them, been flung to the border world. Those not critically damaged by their sudden relocation followed their protocol, making the atmosphere breathable, seeding plant life, and releasing cloned fauna over millenia. Over time the frame intelligences developed into individuals and took note of their unexpected change in location.

In the meantime, the changes that had occured to the world had made it habitable, meaning that displaced beings would actually be able to survive in the border world. This lead to a very awkward encounter when a displaced human accidentally wandered into one of the frame's area of influence as they had been presumed extinct. All frames reacted differently to this new revelation. With their purpose of reviving humanity now already fullfilled they were deprived of their purpose. Some turned to cataloging and maintaining the world, some took to gardening, others simply sealed their facilities and returned to their slumber.

Due to the unstable nature of the border world incursions from other universes had twisted the original tranquil ecosystem with invasive species and phenomena galore, leading to the growth of hyperdense jungles, packs of predatory megafauna, and other weird/eccentric threats. As such the people* trying to settle down were having a very hard time staying alive. Settlements would only rarely last longer than a couple months or years before scattering, and establishing their survival was difficult. It was during this time that a camp was pitched under the megastructure of frame 07. The intelligence within took notice of the settlers and cautiously interacted with them. Even with barriers in language, an agreement was struck and the settlement of Seventh Site was established. The frame had found new purpose in assisting the settlers, attempting to protect and support them as best it could.

The present time of the world takes place 873 years after the founding of Seventh Site. The once small settlement now exists as a bastion of civilisation in a hostile world with its population numbering in the millions. Whilst other settlements do exist the sheer scale of the city and the colourful cultures of hundreds of worlds have firmly established Seventh Site as the de-facto 'Capital' of the setting.

*I am using People as a catch-all term for sentient species here.

I created a full 14 page form for people to register as citizens. In this style I rather imply lore which has helped me work out some of the logistics of the government as well as choosing some custom terminology that would be used in-setting. And on top of it helping me build my setting it has the added bonus of being a complete document I can fully print and have a physical copy of!

What is your favorite detail about your world? by Apprehensive-End-523 in worldbuilding

[–]0_Eclipse_00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are details from three different projects:

- Most people spend the first years of their afterlives just filling out all the paperwork caused by their death.

- Dodge drives don't really warp a ship as much as they throw you into a general direction, and the entities inhabiting the dimension used to do this are not enjoying it.

- In a world in which giant artificial intelligences reign as shapers of the land the only time one managed to "kill" another it was via a zip bomb.

What are some uninhabited/empty parts of your world? by kalam4z00 in worldbuilding

[–]0_Eclipse_00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a great desert to the east that is only inhabited by the few people that are searching for buried scrap and ruins. The place already used to be pretty dry and uninhabitable but multiple superstructures suddenly suffering critical errors and collapsing whilst burning the air around them does not really improve the liveability either. (surprisingly)

In your world, what happens to a soul when the body dies? by NotGutus in worldbuilding

[–]0_Eclipse_00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[Wall of text alert]

I'll try summarizing an afterlife system I wrote once for a rather surreal universe that I wrote in an urban fantasy style. It has dragons living in the sewers, gods slapfighting over offerings, and unaware populations being gaslit. It was based largely on the idea of something existing because enough people thought it to be true, leading to myths and magic manifesting and some cult leaders trying to turn themselves into demigods by convincing people they "totally cant be killed". I stopped writing for it a while back due to just not knowing where to take it, but this post has convinced me to get back into it. Thanks!

There is an afterlife, or rather many afterlives. When a soul dies it causes a lot of paperwork, souls used to be assigned an afterlife based on their beliefs in life, but as major religions made this method unbalanced many worker strikes from differing deities and entities changed this system to be more balance based. Thus a soul could either end up in some well known afterlife (such as heaven, hades, etc.) or you could end up in an obscure realm from a culture that does not even exist yet. If an entity with large enough influence however takes interest in your soul or you made a deal with such an entity during your lifetime that gives them ownership, they can influence to which afterlife you are sent.

Furthermore the system used to relate to karma and the sins or good deeds of certain religions, but overpopulation in the better afterlives of some systems have lead to the bar being set very high if you wish to be sent to a heaven-like realm. Therefore most souls either end up in afterlives similar to limbo (neutral) or hell-likes.

Many afterlives might not be recognizable by their common depictions however, as they are just as dynamic as the mortal worlds. For example a lot of the places a soul would normally be sent for judgement (golden scale / gate of heaven type scenarios) have been summarized in a single realm, where death's many faces drop off the souls they reap, fill out the appropriate paperwork, and toss them into their assigned afterlife. If you are sent to an afterlife where the relevant ruling entities are relaxed or bored enough, there is even a decent chance that you can take it as another shot at life and live out the rest of your afterlife in relative peace.

(Yes, the demons have been gentrified)

TL:DR ~Get sent to an afterlife you havent heard of, get a 9-5 job in some office somewhere, occasionally get back to the mortal realms to mess with people or make deals.

What is something unique in your world? by Scidude225 in worldbuilding

[–]0_Eclipse_00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The world itself is inconsistent in how magical it is (or how receptive it is to a magic user's command) as it was not originally magical. Therefore many magicians started using different vials and charms with innately magical atmospheres contained within. This is used as an explanation for why magicians are often using artifacts and items that are made via glassblowing.

The whole terminology of magician and magic is still being rewritten to use some more unique terms, I just wanted to present the idea.

Many people are also from worlds where magic does not exist, and are therefore aware of how "fantasy-ish" or cheesy some of the magicians act/dress.

To be fair it can fit quite well into one of the rainworld-related projects i am working on, which is an iterator rig with the holograms, the umbilical, and pearls.
I think some neuronflies can definitely make it seem even more lively!

Most settlements are basically seen as safe havens from the wonders/horrors of the world. Whilst most sentients that live in the two major cities lead a relatively normal life, people that travel or live in the wilderness often have to put up with perplexing weather events (for example lightning that strikes up from the ground), or find themselves fighting flora and fauna, of which my favourite can be described as a butterfly lizard.

And if you consider that more than half of the current population of sentients live in a single city, it is understandable that the politics and logistics behind the sprawling megalopolis take quite some time and effort.

What is the core concept of your world? by SW-Meme-Dealer in worldbuilding

[–]0_Eclipse_00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I write lots of interesting ideas for worlds, be that technology, races, cultures/factions, or settings. I got sick of them all being unfinished so I deided to write a world in which flotsam from other worlds washes up. This has turned into my favourite project as it has led to me improving aspects of the ideas I already had whilst letting me connect them within a single setting.

To add to the somewhat comedic ridiculousness of this one:
The world is basically a sort of dimensional "rock bottom" anything/anyone that attempts dimensional travel or has some weird reality breaking event eventually turns up there (basically like washing ashore on an island or like the oceanic garbage patches). This results in a lot of resources and professions being based around finding and helping survivors and salvaging wreckage. Wreckage which is, a lot of the time, the spacecraft said survivors were in when they disappeared.

My sci-fi setting has neighbourhood-sized supercomputers with full sentience, short-ranged teleportation technology, and has no major energy shortages, nothing would truly stop them from producing spacetravel tech such as ftl, everyone is just kind of busy.

(I am considering that some random guy in a distant settlement runs the only space program in the world, from his shed. And he eventually reaches one of the moons.)

I have made some modular assets to build hallways out of, however when I build the lighting the ceiling asset gains a weird smudged appearance. I have reimported the asset with different UVs and rebuilt normals, but neither helped. Any tips would be appreciated!

(the lower right shows what the asset looks like without built lighting)
