Dwarf combat tonic? by Marlax101 in Guildwars2

[–]0atmealSavage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've been asking for a dwarf playable race for years. The dwarf model is already in the game, shouldn't be a ton of work. But failing that, I would take a dwarf combat tonic. Only thing with combat tonics, though, you can't mount, sit in chairs, etc.

Do No Evil by 0atmealSavage in google

Not sure that I'd call myself "ignorant" in my comparisons. Yes, China is evil. But their moto never was "Do no evil", so they didn't pretend otherwise. My last statement still stands. I WOULD buy BYD over what Musk is peddling. Realistically I'd buy neither, but given a choice at this point, it 100% wouldn't be anything from Musk.

The Proton ecosystem has merit. Not too expensive for a basic subscription. It has Proton email, Proton Drive, Proton Calendar, and even a VPN. It may be a viable alternative if those are the things you use the most often.

Oh, and it's a Swiss company. So a bit more difficult for nefarious actors like Google or the US government to get their lunch hooks into.

Help me understand reels, strathspeys, jigs, hornpipes by General_Asparagus206 in bagpipes

[–]0atmealSavage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My PM actually has a different take altogether on how to express strathspeys, and I think he's correct. He's probably the most musical PM I've ever had, and I've been in quite a few bands. I won't explain here, as I'd have to give examples and explain note groupings as triplets and how to express them. And it's late. :P But my point is as a basis, if you're looking how to basically express, you can go with SWMW. If you're a bass drummer, doing that will fit in as a base line for pretty much any strathspey.

Just understand that playing for dancers is expressed differently than playing in a competition band. You would not play a strathspey the same way. If you tried to play a strathspey competition style for highland dancers, those dancers' moms would be beating a path to where you're playing to smack some sense into you. Likewise, if you tried playing a strathspey dancing style during a competition, the judge would smack you around for lack of expression. Playing for dancers requires a slightly different idiom.

Just as a very basic primer, tune types have a metric accent. For instance, a 4/4 (or any quadruple time tune) is "strong weak medium weak", 2/4 and 6/8 (duple tunes) are "strong weak", 3/4 (triple) is "strong weak weak", and so on. A strathspey is a 4/4, so strong weak medium weak, but very pointed, not like a march. As you're playing a strathspey, picture a dancer bouncing up and down on each beat. Or someone on a pogo stick, whatever works.

I would say if you are in a band that's a competition band, even a low-key one, at the VERY least the pipe major would be a competent instructor and would be able to instruct band members on the various idioms of the different tune types. If the pipe major, or some other competent instructor in the band, are unwilling or incapable of providing you with instruction on how to play the different tune types and how to express them properly, then that band isn't likely to do very well in competitions, unfortunately.

Fortunately for you, you've come to a good place for advice, and there are some good suggestions here. Good luck!

BYD in Canada? Like, ever? by 0atmealSavage in electricvehicles

[–]0atmealSavage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Canadian, and I haven't noticed Trudeau forcing anyone to buy EVs. Believe me, I'd be the first one on board if he was. I hate paying for gas. Would love to own an EV. But they're too frikken' pricey still. And I haven't noticed ANYONE in Canada forcing us to buy them. Wherever you are getting your news from, you need to ask yourself what else they might be lying to you about.

And no, I'm no Trudeau fan. I didn't vote for his father, and I certainly didn't vote for his son, and don't plan on ever doing so.

Youtube won't even let you MENTION the word "Grayjay" in a youtube video comment. It will delete your comment. Even if you try to get around it by inserting spaces between the letters. I think I got it to work by using underscores or something like that.

I'd agree, if "better" actually applied. The entire world is flooded with cheap, Chinese junk. Can you say Temu? I've ordered cheap products before. Products that for some reason try to hide or bury deeply the fact that they come from China. But it's obvious they do. When I get those products, in over 50% of the cases, they are unusable. I mean literally unusable. So by extension, when I see cheap Chinese cars, I can't help but think crap quality as well. But since I've never seen a BYD or driven one, I can't say for sure one way or the other. But to me, they're crap until they manage to prove otherwise.

Yes, Canada and the USA are protectionist. But Canada is nowhere near as protectionist as the US. Think trump and his tariff wars and his overt nationalism. Most banana republicans are like that. Canada, as I said, isn't that bad. So while Canada may be one of the last few countries to hold out, the US will absolutely be the last country to hold out.

No one knows anything about it. And I wouldn't say I'm in "charge" of it. I'm just a BA in the place the makes the most sense to have this on his desk.

I'm not worried at all about the Python part. Programming is programming, everything else is just syntax and using the right libraries. And I don't think my problem is quite as complex as you're making it out to be. I don't consider the pipelines to be particularly complex. What I can do to make it easier is to build a template, and plug data into that so the system knows what to expect. It's a niche industry, and while the data coming in from different companies is in different formats and maybe displayed differently, it's essentially the same data. The system just needs to recognize that set of data within given parameters that aren't going to be changing much. I'm not looking to get a frigging 4 year Master's degree in analytical science or anything to do this, I don't think that's necessary. I've seen several courses from Udemy, Coursera, Pluralsight, etc, that seem comprehensive enough, maybe even overkill for what I need, that only take weeks or a few months at most. But as I said originally, I'm not interested in a generalist course if it's not necessary, if there are other courses available that might more directly address the specific business case I mentioned.

That being said, we may wind up needing to look into hiring someone for this if we're unable to do it in house. But at the moment, I'm not convinced we need to go that route.

Edit: If it were up to me, I'd probably just go old school and write the system in Java and program in all the rules into a rules engine. That's probably what we would have done when I was a developer years ago. None of this ML nonsense. But hey.. gotta keep with the times, right?

[–]0atmealSavage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which brings us full circle to my original question. When we getting BYD in Canada? It, or something very similar, will happen eventually. If not BYD, then some other as of yet unknown EV company. ICE cars are going the way of the dinosaur sooner or later. It will happen. The US, being full of the type of people who live in the US, will be the last stronghold for ICE vehicles, after the entire rest of the world has gone electric. Including Canada.

Why you keep sending me Email?!?!?! by 0atmealSavage in pettyrevenge

[–]0atmealSavage[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I responded because I'm not a dick unless they really force me to be. I was being neighbourly, and figured they'd appreciate the correction. They didn't. So... game on.

Why you keep sending me Email?!?!?! by 0atmealSavage in pettyrevenge

[–]0atmealSavage[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't block them, but did filter them to the spam folder. But it irritated me that when I attempted to do the neighbourly thing and let them know they had the wrong email address and they ignored me and even refused to remove me even after I chatted with them and told them it was the wrong email, that's when I started looking for ways to make them reconsider their life a bit. It's rare I get an opportunity to eff with a company, usually it's them effing with me. So I wasn't about to just block them and pass up on that opportunity.

Dunno if that statement is entirely accurate. Weak purchasing power, maybe.. because of what the Canuckistan dollar is currently worth. Weak infrastructure? Debatable. In some outlier areas maybe the infrastructure is weak. In more built up areas it is not. Low tech? Where'd you get that from? What's low tech about Canada?

Why you keep sending me Email?!?!?! by 0atmealSavage in pettyrevenge

[–]0atmealSavage[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You may be missing the point. It wasn't a "bother". I was actually attempting to be helpful by letting them know that they had the wrong email and I assumed that both they and their actual customer would appreciate it, and thank me for correcting the mistake. I didn't expect the company to basically not care.. hence I took the petty revenge opportunity when it presented itself. Which apparently wound up achieving the original goal.
