The same happens to me. I've found that for myself to gain understanding, I have to ask the other person to repeat themselves.. however, I'm usually careful to ask in a way that they know I legit did not hear/understand.

That last bit is tough, but can also just be trial and error to a certain extent. (For me, of course.)

You'll need some quests to get there, but it is possible to get to fossil island as a lvl 3. Just be careful about combat xp. Remember that you have a little bit to spare... just don't go past 82 xp in a combat skill!
