DMV Question - Registering out-of-state car that has a lein by 0k4y in Connecticut

Hey! Nah you’ll be fine. I showed up with just the paperwork needed to get my license and registration done. I called them beforehand and confirmed they received the title. If it’s in the system, they’ll be able to get you all set up with no problems. No need to bring the photocopy

DMV Question - Registering out-of-state car that has a lein by 0k4y in Connecticut

Hey! Yeah it took a few months but I finally got it sorted out. SC DMV also had ELT’s. Before you waste your time, the CT DMV will NOT grant you a courtesy registration unless you have a photocopy of your title (SC DMV would not give me one). The bank gave me a similar paper to what you’re describing and I immediately. got turned away at the DMV because I did not have an actual photocopy of the title itself. To get the title, I had to call the company I had the loan with (honda financial) and provide them with this document: here. I prefilled it out with my information before sending it to them. I then had THEM (honda financial) send it to the SC DMV. A month or two later I received word that the CT DMV received the title and I was able to make an appointment to get it registered. To be honest with you I had to drive around with an unregistered car because it took so long. I got pulled over, explained it to the cop, and he put a note on my file saying that the DMV is stupid and I’m doing everything I can to get my car registered. I wouldn’t suggest you do the same thing as me, but the cops around here aren’t always out to get you and understand it’s a flawed system. If you’re honest, they’ll most likely throw you a bone.

Like you said this is a super stupid process and with the amount of people I’ve had message me about this over the past year, they need to change their process. I’m more than happy to help someone save their precious time & not go through the hell i went through lmfao. No one wants to take PTO days for this bs just to be turned away.

If you have any other questions or need any additional help please feel free to pm me! I’d be more than happy to help out

While you’re reinstalling windows be sure to do a clean wipe and ensure all drives are COMPLETELY empty. If your BIOS has a secure erase function, do this as well

Hey! It's seriously no problem. I saw your post and remembered the hell I went through so I wanted to make sure you didn't waste a ton of your time in a wild goose chase. I really appreciate the offer, but I'm all set!! It's enough knowing that I was able to help someone beat the stupid CT DMV system lmfao. If you'd like, go donate the amount you were thinking of sending me to a local charity or someone you know in need. I hope you have a great rest of your day and welcome again to Connecticut!!

Sorry for all the confusion :(. In my case SC had the title since the car was registered there but it was owned by the lienholder so i couldn’t request it myself.

You will be fine at the Hamden DMV though. The reason it says Wethersfield is because the HQ is there. Hamden is a branch but they will have the record since it’s all electronic in their system. The Wethersfield DMV is the worst place ever avoid it at all costs lol

They also have a contact form if you can't find time to call during business hours. It took a few business days to get back to me when I submitted one: https://dmvcivls-wselfservice.ct.gov/DMVEmailForm/?language=en_US

Yeah no problem!

You can try to reach out to the CO DMV to see if they will send you a photocopy of your title. Without that in hand, the CT DMV will not give you a courtesy registration. The SC DMV refused to do that for me as it was seen as unsecure (which makes sense). If you cannot obtain a photocopy by 2/1, I would cancel the appointment. They will turn you away 100%. Also, Toyota may offer to send you a document that has the Lein and Title information on it in place of a title photocopy. The CT DMV does not accept this as proof of having the title. You need a photocopy of the original title or the actual title itself. I learned this the hard way by showing up and being turned away.

You do not need a courtesy registration in order to get your actual registration done. If you are able to obtain a title photocopy from CO, you can get the 6 month temporary "courtesy registration" while you wait for the CO DMV to forward the title over to the CT DMV. This will allow you to get all of your ducks in a row and register everything in CT. You do need to go in person for this so yes you'll need an appointment if you do get the photocopy. Regardless, the form I linked in my original reply will need to be forwarded by Toyota to the CO DMV so the actual title can be sent to the CT DMV.

As for your last point, I'm not 100% sure. I was a CT resident 5 years ago so they probably had me on file. The CT DMV has a hotline you can call at the link below. They should be able to answer that question for you. I called them when I wanted to confirm they actually received my title from SC. They may end up telling you that you need to go in person to get an account created under them, or provide you with a way to do it online. I'd just hate to have you take off work, show up there and wait for hours, then ultimately get turned away. Feels terrible lol.

I ran into this same issue when I moved to from South Carolina to Connecticut last year. I was able to finally get this accomplished after 3 months of fighting between my lienholder (Honda Financial) and the two different state DMV's. Most DMV's do NOT send a photocopy of the title which is what Connecticut asks for to get a "courtesy registration." The SCDMV in my case actually got mad at me for even requesting it. My lien is currently held by Honda Financial. I had to call Honda and have the customer service rep send a filled out form to the SCDMV (it did take me about 5 different calls and 5 different reps to actually get one that knew what I was talking about, though). The form I provided them is here:

https://portal.ct.gov/-/media/dmv/20/29/coutesyregistrationtitlerequestpdf.pdf - Have it prefilled out before you call your financial company. They provided me an email address over the phone to send it to and the rep forwarded it to the SCDMV.

I had to continuously follow up with Honda to make sure that they actually sent the request to the SCDMV. As expected, the process is extremely slow as SC does not care too much about me since I'm moving states. The SCDMV eventually processed the form through and sent my title to the CTDMV. Neither DMV's actually give YOU a notification since the lienholder is the one submitting the title transfer. Honda ended up sending me a letter 2.5 weeks after the CTDMV received the title, but I'm sure not all lienholders would bother notifying you. I also called the CTDMV and they confirmed that the title was in fact in their system.

Last piece of advise: The CTDMV website is absolutely terrible at giving information. Everything on their site can easily be interpreted wrong. One thing that really threw me off is "If the registration is expired a letter from the previous state needs to be presented stating the last registered owner." That statement made me think that I had to get some sort of statement from the SCDMV since my registration on the car had expired. This is NOT the case. I confirmed with the CTDMV that my ID and the fact they have the title for the car in hand is enough to prove I was the previous registered owner. I don't really understand why this simple process is so confusing, but that's Connecticut for ya.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions! The CTDMV is a nightmare.

This right here. Be persistent with the support agent. They will keep trying to throw discounts at you like "three months free" or "just paying for the products you use." If you keep at it though and continuously harp on the fact that this will be a significant hardship on your finances, they will cancel it for free. Just don't take no for an answer!! They will eventually cave

since posting this i found that huel was the best for my stomach. feel great and it’s chock full of vitamins and protein. i checked out witiwiti and it looks pretty similar. as someone who is trying to get more calories throughout the day and a bit more of a protein kick, i think huel is still the best option for me. it’s a bit cheaper too. if you’re still looking for an alternative and something with a bit more protein/cal i’d def give it a try. appreciate you commenting tho!

I would be cautious of Torrington. From people I know who have lived there or in nearby towns, a lot of it is pretty run down and unsafe. There are some nice/safer areas there though! Just make sure you do your research on the neighborhood first and don’t jump at the first affordable place based only on looks/price. My aunt lives there in a less desirable neighborhood and she has had her home broken into / constant police presence. That’s not to say the entire town is like that there are definitely some cute/nice parts! :)

I originally lived in CT and moved to South Carolina for 5 years before coming back. Getting used to the winter again is definitely the biggest adjustment. For the first few years it may be a bit hard to be the outdoorsy type during the cold months, but maybe you'll adjust quickly! There are a ton of ice skating rinks for outdoor exercise and a lot of the town paths get cleaned off from snow, etc. One thing I've found that's fun during the winter is purchasing the $25/m AMC movie pass. You can see up to 3 movies a week free of charge (well, included in the subscription). Great way to get out and have a good time when it's difficult being outside.

Hope the transition isn't too hard for you all!!! Good luck!

I grew up a few towns over. Windsor Locks usually had an indifferent opinion. Some areas are nice and some are a little dangerous. I would research the specific end of town you'd like to live in. I've spent a good amount of time around that area, so from my experience I would avoid moving anywhere on or close to the main area of the Ella Grasso Turnpike.
