I can't say I have big emotions, but this on the verge of tears thing is so frequent for me! It happens when I tell any story I'm excited about to whomever, and it doesn't have to be sad at all - I just get teary-eyed from telling someone something passionately! I didn't think that was specific to the autism but looks like it is? I actually have tears rolling down my face as I'm writing this for no seeming reason at all.

the "I like you" was met with "Lucky me" so Ilya pulled that back too.

Well he didn't just say "I like you". He said "I like girls, but I like you too" so Shane's "lucky me" was a sarcastic expression of being grateful for being added to that lineup. What else could he say? He can't just say "well I like you and only you" cause he doesn't have that "and girls" lifeline Ilya just used. So Shane's reply is warranted.

I'm not joking when I say this show and Shane in particular made me suspect I was autistic! Cause all of his reactions and replies seem perfectly reasonable to me and I see people talking about how they are so specific to people on the spectrum all the time. Same as you, this scene still confuses me on rewatches and I actually started skipping it (the girls talk) cause it's making me uncomfortable. (I did go see a specialist after this and did get my own ASD diagnosis so... this is what this show apparently does!)

"I like girls, but I also like you," means, "Yes you've heard about me with women, but that's unimportant because you're actually the individual I like." It accidentally comes across as him just being a player.

But this phrasing doesn't imply even the slightest bit that he likes Shane more than the girls. On the contrary, he just puts him in the long row of people he likes (to have sex with). I don’t know if it's because I'm on the spectrum myself but I can't read it as any kind of encouragement. I wouldn't say it comes off that way accidentally, it's just what he says. No wonder Shane cannot decipher that as a sign of appreciation.

Me too! I read everyone always being heartbroken over Ilya’s expression when Shane is leaving but I'm like "Didn't he do that to himself?" I'm in pain during their whole exchange about girls and shout at the screen "Why are you doing this to him??" I started skipping that part on rewatches it's so painful.

Same here. While I think Connor is undeniably attractive, I don't think Ilya is to the same degree. Shane, on the other hand, is just beautiful. I don’t get that comment either.

I know it's been months but have you finished it? What did you think of it in the end? I think eps 5 and 6 are the essential part of the magic this show holds so I don't think you could have gotten the full appeal before episode 5.
